Pacific Rim - Part 3

That sounds awesome.

I know, right? :D

And, as a mecha fan, it was the main thing that put me off. Totally fine with it now though. :D

I was completely down with it the moment I heard about it, since it pretty much fulfills two of my favorite film loves: inventive sci-fi ideas/concepts/world-building and character development. And I love that that they work off of each other.

Finding out that it's the main driving force of the film makes it even better to me. If they're aren't really developed characters in film I'm watching, or at least moderately interesting ones, the characters are just puppets, there aren't any stakes, and it just a soulless action film. Why should I care about what's happening on screen if I don't care about the characters involved? Great characters, or a lack thereof, can make or break a film for me.

One of the things I want to make sure of when writing my scripts in the future is to fully realize and develop my characters, so that the audience cares about what happens to them. Because I'll definitely have my characters get into some messed-up situations.

I would like to have a future in writing scripts for big-budget blockbuster films, but animated, like a hybrid of traditional and CG animation, but aimed at adults. Basically, more PG-13 oriented fare, where you can get away with a lot more mature and intense situations, like more frightening imagery, more sexual content, more violence, etc. One, because it's much more freeing to be doing stuff for a wider audience and not having to worry about scaring off the kiddies. Two, because some of the ideas I have and stuff that happens in some of my stories are so over-the-top, it would have to be animated, because live-action wouldn't even do it justice.

I'm already developing ideas for a concept I have in mind, but I'm nowhere near experienced enough to write scripts. It's definitely a craft I need to start developing in the near future.

Has anyone read the pre-comic thing? Is it spoilery or anything?

I'm having problems predicting a B.O. weekend result because Grown-Ups opens that weekend and honestly, despite it most likely sucking, I can see it doing big numbers.

Is Grown Ups even going for the same market though?

Look at this past weekend, Monster Inc and WWZ coexisted and both did quite well.

Grown Ups shouldn't even have a market.

If Monsters University and WWZ can open with 82 and 66mil respectively along with MOS doing 41mil then there is room for Grown ups 2 and Pacific Rim. I wouldn't be surprised if Grown Ups 2 opened better though.

There's no way on this planet kids will be more interested in Grown Ups 2 than Pacific Rim, couple that with Sandler becoming box office poison recently and I can see things turning around.

Around this time last year Prometheus was slated to open with $30 million, it did $55 million.

As for those who do go see Grown Ups 2;

I don't know about 30mil? I remember most predictions for Prometheus being in the 40's. I could be wrong though and I'm open to somebody proving me wrong. And it did 51mil, not 55mil.

Sandler did this sequel in order to have a easy hit, I don't see Grown Ups 2 opening below 40mil. I hope it does but I don't see it.

Gotta factor in who will get dragged to what movie that weekend though. Girls and women will probably want to see the goofy family comedy. Kids and grown men will check out Pacific Rim, so it won't be a blowout.

Do people even know about pacific Rim in the first place?

The town I live and the ppl I live around( mostly country, rednecks) all love sandler.

All of them hate him now and can't stand the man. Even tho I actually laughed at that's my boy idk why.

There's no way in hell grown ups 2 makes even 20mill I think it will be a huge flop if ppl are thinking in the 40s.

Don't underestimate the power of the group guy comedy. Plus, people really liked the first one I guess.

At the most I see this opening in the $40 mil range. Anything more would be surprising. At the very least in the $30 mil range.

Which sucks.

I really want it to do well so we get a sequel...but I just don't think america is ready for full scale giant robot on monster action.

I'm entered for some free tickets here in St. Louis a number of places, but even if I win I'll likely pay to see it another time.

When movies like this come out I always want to take some of my younger cousins but it never works out. It pains me that 2 of them, who are huge fans of Marvel comics characters never got to see the Avengers in theaters.

Time to make it work out. First you'll need a van, some candy, and paint.

Transformers had the advantage of being based on a popular toy and or cartoon. This movie looks weird, shallow and sorta like it's trying to cash in on Transformers popularity. Jamie summed it up, it looks like a pure fanboy movie. It's marketing is almost exclusively directed towards people who like what it is, who know not to expect a Transformers clone but a live action anime film. The truth is, only a big late push and funny enough the big robots and monsters can save it now. Warners and Legendary botched it's marketing from the get-go. Believe me, Legendary are hoping for a WWZ miracle but that film had Pitt and Jolie pushing it. One way or the other the Friday numbers are going to be interesting to watch. And not because we get any of the cash but because an original movie succeeding or failing is important if you want to see more than comicbook movies and sequels.

ITA. I barely know what words like kaiju and jaeger mean but I see them used here and on other boards all the time. That right there is a sign of the disconnect between the fanboys and who they need to be concentrating on: the general audience. I was watching tv with my sisters and my cousins and a tv spot for this came on. They asked "Is this another Transformers?" The powers that be need to do a better job of advertising ASAP.

The film needed a name, either in front or behind the camera.

As far as GA success is concerned.
WWZ without Pitt.

Yeah, they did need at least one big A-lister for this thing. The most well known actor in it is probably Elba and he hasn't reached "oh yeah, i know that dude by sight" status yet. Not everybody watches Sons of Anarchy, has seen Hellboy or Babel, or It's Always Sunny, hard it may be to fathom. The trick is to cast some semi well known good actors who won't charge you an arm and a leg, and one guy that everybody around the world knows so you get that worm on the hook, so to speak.
