Pacific Rim - Part 3

And then of course there's the JJ Abrams method of being both derivative AND convoluted.
:hmm

At least his films are good imo. I get a lot of enjoyment out of them. But I can see your point. :yay:

JJ has a great ability to make fantastic, thrilling moments, but his movies never really hang together as a whole for me. His more emotional moments never really feel earned, coasting on the iconography of earlier movies and of course dat Giacchino. JJ will do well working with a different set of writers.

I love JJ. I think his Star Trek is one of the funnest films I've seen in years.

However, two things:

1.) He hasn't hit his stride yet. He has a lot more in him that we've haven't seen before. All he has to do is to push himself.

2.) He has outgrown his usual writers of Orci/Kurtzman. Totally outgrown them.

I thought JJ was a fully fledged writer himself, unionized et all?

I wonder what his pacific Rim film would have been like. The lighting probably would have been alot more conventional. And he does have a love for genre.

still think it's gnarly that GDT has this walking Abrams tribute featured in his film in the form of Charlie Day.
Maybe Abrams will return the favor by way of a star wars character lol.

I liked his first Star Trek movie, the new one not so much.

Anyways, on topic for Pacific Rim, I'm entered in several drawings for a screening Tuesday night, including from some local sites with small readerships from which I've won many tickets before. I'll find out tomorrow night if I snagged any. If I do I'll have a review up Wednesday.

The weekend following the 12th will be the litmus test. If RIPD and Red 2 challenge it, there you go.

He should call me up. :D

1. Del Toro said that Day goes from looking like Rick Moranis to Abrams throughout the film.

You can see a little bit of the former in the behind the scenes footage.

2.Del Toro the Hutt.

Make it happen.:jedi

I agree. I actually loved Star Trek Into Darkness as well (on my second viewing) it's main problems are from the script and trying to homage way too much. But over all both films are just fun from start to finish. I think JJ is actually a superb director, and as you said he has beyond outgrown those writers he keeps using.

That's why I am nothing but smiles seeing him team up with Michael Arndt for Episode VII. JJ really is a great director and brings Spielberg like sensibilities from the late 70's/early 80's.

However, I am hopeful for Pacific Rim, I loved the script (even though it seems tons of stuff has changed). I wonder when the reviews will start pouring in? I saw Alex said a few things, but I'm interested to see how much faith Legendary has in this film. Will they lift the embargo early?

Yea I kind of expect that at this point. All I want is for it to beat Grown Ups 2.

Yes I know, outlook not so good on that goal either at this point.

Even that's in doubt because Grown Up 2's trailer wasn't actually that bad. The movie will most likely suck, but they're did a pretty good job with their commercials and trailers.

Women at my White House Down screening were affectionately quoting the "I wanna get chocolate wasted!" line during the Grown-Ups 2 trailer.

Anecdotal evidence shouldn't be taken to heart but I've never seen that happen before.

At a certain point people need to stop falling for Adam Sandler's ****.

They have. His last couple of comedies bombed. But Grown-Ups was one of his biggest hits (and most popular too) and he's due for another one. Only seen bits and pieces. Didn't care for it myself, but I get why people liked it.

Are you guys talking about the annoying voice he makes whenever he wants sound very jewish?

I think they're referring to that high-pitched/gibberish voice he did in Billy Madison? When he's loaded?

But he hasn't done that voice in years.

I'm referring to the new one he picked up a few years back that he's put to horrible use on That's My Boy and as the sister on Jack and Jill.

Yeah, that's the one I was talking about, Sawyer. That was horrible.
