I know him from all his voice work long before SOA or Hellboy.

Every women in my family knows Ron Perlman as Vincent from Beauty and the Beast. They have all had crushes on him for over 20 years. My mother started watching SOA because of Perlman.

These were mostly young twenty something's at the screening. I'm glad he has a bigger fanbase though

Saw it today in IMAX 3D. I would give it a 7/10. Moe enjoyable that Transformers, and the 3D was quite good due to the human-point-of-view shots, but the action was bad. Every battle scene was in the dark, with lots of water and rain. Most of the time you couldn't see what's happening.

I am seeing it in IMAX 3D very soon and I'm worried its not going to be lit properly. Saw it in 2D and I could make out everything perfectly well even with all the rain/darkness.

So my movie theater only has two showings for PR in 2D and two for it in 3D....is everyone else's theater the same way? How the heck's this movie supposed to make any money with barely any showings??? Even the Lone Ranger has like 7 showings a day!
Same here.

Pretty good movie id give it a generous 8/10

Definitely worth a watch

Yeah, Perlman has a lot of fans from a lot of different things. He has like 3 or 4 different cult followings. :funny:

I saw it in imax 3d and didn't have any problem. So maybe you'll be fine.

The way the night time scenes are lit, you'd think they'd be perfect for 3D, especially IMAX 3D.

PACIFIC RIM

I wasn’t too impressed with Hellboy or Pan’s Labyrinth, and Hellboy 2 bored me to death. But Pacific Rim redeems Guillermo del Toro as a director whose specialty has been make-up and fantasy characters’ design mostly.

Pacific Rim has the very elements all action movies of the like have, but good. Lots of action, but good, a love interest, but good, comedy, but good (and boy, this is rare nowadays). In short, this movie had the ability to mix the elements with more interest in how to make the story progress instead of how many cheap laughs and wow’s it can generate.

A bunch of mostly unknown actors make the characters interesting enough, engaging and lovable enough, even though sometimes one would want to see more of who they are. Something most similar movies totally or partially dismiss (character must be able to say one-liners and the music can underline whatever they’re supposedly feeling). Also the action, which is not scarce, is immensely more interesting and thrilling just because beyond the noise and fireworks, you can follow it.

Some characters, like Ron Perlman’s, have a too transient effect, but most of them work without having to top them up with loads of background information or foolish jokes.

Finally an action movie that delivers and not just befuddles with a collection of short-lived shocking effects.

4.5/5

I don't think the movie is too far removed from the first Transformers either. Sure it's better but not by much IMHO. Hell, it could have good word of mouth for that very reason. Maybe Legendary does have a hit on their hands, it did well last night.

That's the thing. On the surface it doesn't try to be more than Transformers 1. It just is more... or well, a better and more accurate term here is not 'more' but better.

It seemed the coolant freezing worked the best. Why don't they just design bombs that freeze the monsters?

9/10.

Pure, unadulterated, un-convoluted, straight-forward FUN. It is a film made with heart and style utterly lacking in cynicism. Leave your movie watching baggage at the door, it is not needed here.

The complaint about cheesy dialogue or weak characters is weak in and of itself imo. The character are no more or less thought out than 98% of today's summer blockbusters. In fact, I'd say a bit more thought is put into them then most.

Quoted because I agree with every single thing that you said. This movie was great (despite killing "you know who"). Nuff said.

Because this just went live. Fan-made film officially endorsed by Warner Bros. featuring appearances by Robert Kazinsky (Chuck Hansen from the movie) and Guillermo del Toro himself. Oh, and a bunch of gamers too!! :D

Personally, I think this is ten kinds of awesome and hilarious to boot!!

So from those that have seen it, what makes it different than every other summer blockbuster, aside from knowing it's Del Toro's baby?

Heart and soul. That's all I have to say. You can see and feel that the people involved - at least those helming it -love the source they are taking inspiration from. And for fans of the genre, the film did very much feel like a massive love letter to kaiju films.

At least, that's what really stands out. There are other little things such as its unpretentious nature. It is not trying to pretend to be something deeper than it is. It's meant to be something dumb, fun and not completely logical. And delivers it at that level. Unlike, say, some other summer films such as Michael Bay's Transformers that also promise "dumb fun" but instead deliver something that is mentally deficit and that actually probably kills brain cells.

I just saw that EW gave this a B- while giving Grown-Ups 2 a B.

Just.... sigh. :o

On the surface, very little. But a ton of little details tells you that the director cared about the characters and the wow factor was just a great consequence, not his main aim.

The action, compared to that of Transfomers or Man of Steel (just to name a few) was a pleasure, not just noise. You can follow it, it breathes and therefore it can get more and more exciting.

Characters you care about. Action that is creative, intense and doesn't turn into destruction porn. Amazing art design.

Robots vs aliens giant sized. That's about it. There are movies this summer with much better characters and much better action. This action is unique enough to where its worth seeing and id say it should be seen on the big screen at least once because the scale is huge, certainly won't be coming for the characters or story.

This movie was motherfn Epic....EPIC. It was BIG...it was loud, its
What a summer movie should be..Visually breathtaking..just omg

For me:

- It's actually fun and not overly long. Man of Steel and Lone Ranger IMHo ran way too long and you never really liked the characters as much. I found it very well paced.

- It's something different in terms of big budget live action Hollywood spectacle. We've never seen something quite like this onscreen before.

- Simplistic characters yes but also very fun and appealing ones at the same time. Easy to just get into and enjoy.

- Everything made sense within the world they created.

Speaking of the characters, there is one important thing that should get mentioned... With the possible exception of Herc Hansen (the father in the Australian pair), every major character gets a story arc and evolves over the course of the movie. Which is refreshing compared to most summer movies and makes otherwise well trodden character archetypes interesting to watch.

That was awesome.

Agreed so much. I think what's funny is that you can really tell which of the Youtubers have spent more time acting and/or in front of the camera. Some come off really stilted - I'm looking at you Husky! - while others are a lot more natural.

I liked it quite a bit. The story was brisk. Not a lot of character development but the characters are likeable.

My biggest gripe was that Raleigh and his main rival looked too alike. I thought it was the same actor.

I don't know about the IMAX, but the regular Real-D format is very immersive. The Hong Kong action sequence especially looks good in 3D, as well as 2D.

If you have the extra cash, the 3D version of Pacific Rim is worth shelling out for. Very good 3D, on par with The Avengers.

Actually in this case, a 9 minute parody short, the bad stilted acting makes it even better.
