Pacific Rim - Part 6

Why the hell Charlie Day is getting stick?!

Didn't anyone see Burn Gorman?! He was ten times worse!!

Hunnam definitely didn't make the film shine. He's a handsome meathead who thinks "dramatic" means growling your lines like a toned-down Batman. That role definitely could have gone to a better actor. But he doesn't take me out of the film like Day. If you like 'Sunny' I understand, but I think the first problem here was casting a sitcom actor in a dramatic movie. It reminded me a bit of the whole Ken Jeong Transformers 3 cameo, admittedly nowhere near as bad as that though (and of course PR is a much better film).

I guess I'm just a big ole hater in general when it comes to over the top comic-relief roles in otherwise serious movies.
I agree that the comedy was the weakest part of the film. I honestly felt they could have merged the scientists characters into one character( I agree Burn Gorman was way worse than Day.) and not have him be so stereotypically goofy. Hunnam wasn't strong in the film, but I guess it could have been worse. I liked Mako and Pentecost as characters the best.

The comedy is hit and miss for people but as someone else said Gorman's schtick was far more irritating than Day's.

I liked some of the comedy but it could have been toned down more. I think Perlman's character was about as comedic as necessary. I'd rather have had more of him in the film to be honest.

I thought so too. And I may be the only person in the world getting tired of Ron Perlman's shtick. But the movie was pretty awesome.

I just found Hunnam to be very average and I didn't think he brought that much charisma or personality to the role.

I don't think casting a sitcom actor's the problem because there are a good amount of sitcom actors who have done well in dramatic roles, Bryan Cranston being one of the most famous recents ones, and I think there are enough examples to show that he's not an exception (Like Will Smith, Zach Braff, Jamie Foxx, Will Ferrell though he was technicall on a sketch show, etc.) .

Fair enough on everything else.

And on Gorman, I agree that I found him more irritating and I thought Day actually made Gorman seem less irritating when they're on screen together.

I saw this last night. It was embarrassingly bad. I mean awful. Every actor except for stacker and Hercules gave a cheese filled performance. The worst offenders were the two scientists and Ron perlmans character. Especially Ron, he was ridiculous. I really didn't care for the characters, even less so than I did with the human characters in transformers. Lol. Charlie Hunnam also delivered almost all of his lines in a laughably bad way. But that being said, I enjoyed the movie. It was ridiculous, full of cliches and packed with cheese, but i can't say it wasn't enjoyable. It's one of those bad movies that entertains you with how bad it is. :p

God, people sure know how to nitpick these days. Gorman and Day were both awesome. I don't see how either are OTT. Gorman is just a high strung, stereotypical English scientist. Day is more new wave, hipster scientist. I saw nothing OTT about either. The way some go on you would think they were Jar Jar Binks or something.

Jar Jar Binks was less annoying than Gottlieb.

My wife and I watched it again last night. It's one of her favorite movies right now. We thought the humor was fine in the movie. A point I have noticed across the boards lately (not just in here)....many posters are upset if there is any humor in a movie. Everything is supposed to be glum grim dark gloomy......

I think people are starting to have a problem with humor, when it destroys any tension or drama build up. Humor itself isn't bad, but when it starts to take over, or gets used at the wrong time continuously, because the people in charge think the audience will get bored if a dramatic scene isn't immediately followed by some joke, it starts to get annoying. It's why I have an issue with Iron Man 3. No one wants "glum grim dark gloomy", at least not the people that I have seen. They just don't want the humor to be excessive.

That said, I had no issues with Pacific Rim myself. I accepted it as the cheese fest that it is.

I like humor and Charlie was okay but he was too much at times. I really liked the more dry humor of Ron Perlman's character personally.

I'm all for popcorny movies but does it really have to be so full of cliches? They couldn't come up with better plot devices then the traumatized superpilot who falls in love and blah blah blah. I love cheese, but when things get too cheesy, it just makes you sick.
What the **** was del Toro saying about how important characters are, "it's the story and the human element, not the monsters". Bull**** man! How could he go with a script such as this had? Damn.

It's not the fact that humor existed, it's how over-the-top and cheesy it was, same as Iron Man 3.

One, his trauma wasn't played up as a major plot point to get over, it was merely an aspect of his character. And two, he didn't fall in love.

Oh come on. He went to seclusion and was all like "I cant do it anymore". And Idris Elba was all like "you are the only one who can!". Laaaaame.
And ok, they didn't end up kissing if I remember correctly, but they had a thing going on, even though they had no chemistry and on top of that the acting was pretty bad on Charlie's part.

You can't say people didn't like the humor in Pacific Rim because they want it to maintain its dark and gritty atmosphere because it didn't have that. Certain parts of it didn't have that.

One 5min scene in the whole film.

The whole point of their relationship was that it wasn't romantic. You're reading into something not there.

I saw this movie so long ago I can't remember everything. But that 5 minutes was enough. There were many gringeworthy scenes, but I would have to watch this again so cant really give my counter opinion. But this is the feeling I got when I saw it. I can't believe the guy who directed Pan's Labyrinth, Devil's Backbone, Cronos and Hellboy movies would go with this script. But that's me.

Raleigh and Mako might not have officially gotten together onscreen, but I definitely thought there were romantic undertones.

Jar Jar Binks was less annoying than Gottlieb.

Now that's just silly.

I think cheesy humor can work but it's also an art. I think Gottlieb didn't totally work but I got what Del Toro was trying to do with his character so I hound him half amusing rather than annoying.

I didn't think any of the comic relief characters were actually funny, that was the problem. Lol. Wheras in iron man 3 and Thor 2 at least the comic relief people were funny. But I laughed the whole time at the clichéd dialogue and the ridiculousness of it all so it ended up being pretty funny. :p

The action was pretty good though. wish I could have seen it in IMAX!
