I think people are starting to have a problem with humor, when it destroys any tension or drama build up. Humor itself isn't bad, but when it starts to take over, or gets used at the wrong time continuously, because the people in charge think the audience will get bored if a dramatic scene isn't immediately followed by some joke, it starts to get annoying. It's why I have an issue with Iron Man 3. No one wants "glum grim dark gloomy", at least not the people that I have seen. They just don't want the humor to be excessive.
That said, I had no issues with Pacific Rim myself. I accepted it as the cheese fest that it is.

I honestly never had that problem with PR, there was plenty of humour, but never did it under-cut a dramatic or emotional scene, those moments were allowed to breathe, which made them sink in and have more effect. I personally loved PR and look forward to seeing it again on BD.
