we already learnt all the words in other languages that we needed. that is what english is. it's germanic and romance with some anglo-saxon. so why should we learn another romance language. learning english is the equivalent of learning 3 other languages. we just got rid of all the stuff you don't realy need. like words having feminine or masculine forms. english is the language that has resulted from those in europe trying to communicate. if there is anything else to learn from other languages it's not from any european origin. and english evolves further still to a language of increased cultural diversity and usefulness.

American's need to stop being ignorant to the fact that things are going to be severely mixed in this country and need to start learning other people's languages instead of crying like babies, "Oh, this is America and you speak English, wah wah wah!"

I worked night shift with a bunch of Mexican guys who didn't speak ANY ENGLISH AT ALL! So, what did I do? I learned basic Spanish and made the barrier between us a little easier to get over. I taught a couple guys some basic English to help them get started.

If you don't want to help people learn or learn their language. Guess what? Don't f***ing complain about it like a baby. Put up or shut up.

I don't know other languages and I wouldn't move somewhere where pracitcally nobody spoke english, unless I planned on learning that language. That's why it's not hypocritical as you implied.

Don't get me wrong. It's good that you did what you did. You did a good thing. you helped the situation. I'm merely saying they should help the situation too. If you can do it, then so can they.

Perfect then, this is a perfect opportunity for self-improvement.

And so can you. Instead of complaining, put yourself in a better situation. Learn another language and you'll be better off than before, while some of the people you're complaining about will be at a loss. Don't think of it as an inconvenience, think of it as an opportunity.

over time english will modify to include words from other countries so they wont need to learn somethings. it's the way it works. as soon as you try to standardise english and teach it to everyone this process halts and everyone is doomed to learning multiple languages, that use different rules and words.

I don't know if anyone has touched on this or not.
Most people are coming from situations where education was poor,how do you expect someone with the equivalent of a 3rd grade education,if that,to learn such a complicated language as english. Also their priority is to provide for their family,comes before anything else.

Pathetic, I'm really sick of this crap! If I went to another country I'd learn their language. My Grandfather was happy to come to America and give up his language.

Actually, I'd say they're content living above the previous situation they had in their home country. It's pretty natural to move on up and be content with the positive change.

Not to mention, it's pretty funny to hear about people "living below their potential" on an internet message board. Especially from people grasping for every justification possible to not learn another language and actually expand their minds. Just in case you weren't clear on this, when you pick up another language, it doesn't push the english out of your head. It actually opens up a lot of mental horizons for you. So instead of just complaining about how unfair it is, why not just take the opportunity that's been served up to you and learn a little? You'll end up bilingual and be all the better for it in a lot of different ways. Not just when you get lost at f**king Walmart.

So since Calvin's solution to the problem is for everyone in America to learn every language, why don't we all pick up books on Swahili, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, German, Sweedish, Portuguese, Welsh, etc..

You weren't paying attention to the point. It's not about what's fair or not fair, it's about you having a good opportunity to learn another language for your own benefit. Damn straight. The only real way to learn a language is to go somewhere and live there, work there, soak it up. And odds are it's gonna take a while. I plan to move to France for good next year to do just that, and luckily, if the near year I spent there last year is any indication, they aren't anywhere near as snooty about it as our country can be. If you even try there, they get really happy even if you're butchering it.

Before that I worked in a nursing home. I wanted to play music for a dying patient I wanted to make sure it was appropriate and went around asking all the latinos and latinas what the songs on a particular CD were no one had "their glasses". They couldn't read their own language. I feel no hostility towards these people,especially the hot guys. The less they say the better.

No, I'm not making anything up. It's the truth. And I am curious, if you're going to live in France, why are you going to bother to learn French?? Aren't they supposed to learn English for you?? You are the immigrant, right?? So according to the logic, the French should take the opportunity given to them, by you, to learn English.

There used to be this crazy foreign woman that worked at my local Subway.

She could barely speak any english, and you had to order your food through her. Most of the time you'd order something and se'd give you a totally different meal then the one you ordered. Thank god they fired her.
