Platinum Dunes Producing Monster Squad Remake

I think this was more a less Paramount wanting to remake this more a less then Platinum Dunes and since recently that they had signed a so many picture deal with Paramount, they took it to them, since they have experience in the remake field.

if they try to make Monster Squad 'cool' for their demographic, then kiss the 'witty and culty vibe' from the original goodbye.

Yeah, 'cause the original wasn't trying to be cool with Rudy, the James Dean throwback for the middle school set! :whatever: And this is is from someone who loves the original film.

If it must be done, I think the best approach is a complete overhaul of the characters, settings, and events. The core of Dracula's plan can remain, but everything else has to change.

A bigger issue is balancing out horror, comedy, and the fact that the main characters are kids.

As crazy as it sounds, this could be their most ambitious and most difficult remake to pull off. Even if another production company were handling it.

I've just had this bizarre thought. Considering that Rob Cohen just did a Mummy movie, the Wolfman remake had previously been released, and there's word of a new Dracula being made, what if the plan was to bring them together for the Monster Squad remake a la the Avengers?

All that's missing now is Frankenstein. Maybe he could be their Captain America. They discover him frozen in the arctic where he went at the end of the Shelley novel.

And just so everyone knows, no, I'm not serious.

Monster Squad Remake to Use Classic or New Monsters?

Platinum Dunes continues is remake rampage across Hollywood, steering away from the slasher fare and latching, this time, onto an '80s genre kid classic: The Monster Squad.

Originally directed by Fred Dekker, the update will be produced by the Platinum Dunes team - Andrew Form, Brad Fuller and Michael Bay - as well as Rob Cohen and Paramount Pictures.

Shock inquired about the status of the project with Fuller today who told us: "I'm in the process of finding a screenwriter. I'm meeting with writers every day. So we'll get someone in the next two or three weeks and get them writing."

The original film resurrected Universal's classic monsters, tapping into a healthy obsession many kids growing up in the '80s had with the creatures. But now faced with a new generation, does Platinum Dunes intend to revive these familiar faces again or can we expect a new line-up of foes? "That's something we're definitely talking to writers about and I don't have an answer for you yet," Fuller said.

He maintained, "We're definitely using the original film as a blueprint and love the fun parts of it. We have three or four different takes, some stick closely to the original - others are going to be a bit different. It's about sitting down with Rob Cohen and the studio and figuring out which storyline we're going to go with. But I can tell you all of the story lines, whereas Friday the 13th isn't like the original, this will be close to the original. It's about a group of kids who have a monster squad, monsters come to their town and they've got to figure it out."

The Monster Squad opened in '87 and was written by Dekker and Shane Black.

I used to love this film growing up but I haven't seen it in a longtime so I don't know if it held up over time. Can anyone answer that for me in their opinion?

I'm afraid to go back and watch it again in case it aged horribly. With that being said, I really don't mind this remake, not sure if i'll bother watching it though. Hopefully they make the monsters look good whether they're the classic monsters or new ones.

I watched it a while ago and I was surprised at the type stuff they got away with for supposed kids film.

A fair amount if cursing and violence if you really don't even see anything. I mean you got the wolfman attacking people and Dracula killing cops left and right.

Plus the word "F***ot" is used a couple times, which is like I said weird hearing that word used for what is suppose to be a kids film.

The costumes of the monsters might looked dated and the plot might not make as much sense now as it did when you were a kid. But still a good throw back the 80's.

They won't change the headline players such as Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster. The Mummy and Gill-Man will probably get the chop. Even the Wolfman too after the disappointing reaction to JJ's Wolfman.

I'd kind of like it if the played around with the monsters in monster squad. We already have the orginal with the old universal monsters. I'd like to see kids fighting an unbeatable slasher guy, and weird monster that pops out of the tv like in the ring, ect. Get what I'm saying? I'd really like to see kids fight the modern horror monsters. Make it fit better with the times. Be able to make fun of the style of horror movies today.

I was looking on IMDb and I found out there is a supposed contender draft for the remake. They had a link to go to the link, but I think it was taken down, even know it was from just last month.

Here is what the person wrote who read it. Like I said its IMDB so who knows.

... written by a local director/writer named Stephen Lange. Lange is part of a production troupe called "The Beta Society" that made a horror movie entitled "Junkbucket" a couple years ago. It was a big deal up here in Seattle, but I don't think it made a dent anywhere else.

Anyway, according to the Northwest Film Forum, Lange is one of the writers who's in the running for the remake. Someone (I'll assume Lange himself) posted it on their Yahoo group. Filedropper link (In Final Draft format):

It's... interesting. The draft date is 2008, so I have no idea if this is something Lange wrote and is revising, or if it's just a fan job. If it IS legit, then Platinum Dunes is apparently looking to take the remake in a very different direction.

The Good:
-Same basic setup: kids versus monsters. Not trying to reinvent the wheel.
-The gore, excessive swearing and violence looks like a hard R.
-There's some interesting changes to the monsters themselves, and the mythology around them.
-Some really intense action sequences, as well as a lot of nods to the original flick.

The Bad:
-Parts of this draft are trying WAY too hard to be Kevin Smith lite. The self-referencing is cute, but very "1996."
-No Frankenstein, no Gillman. Maybe due to Universal's legal hurdles?
-There's some very BIG gaps in the story's logic that makes this feel like a half-baked draft. Again, if it is legit, then I hope that Platinum Dunes has someone else working to tighten it up.

They ain't pulling an R. If anything, it'll be a more risque version of that Monster House cartoon flick.

Is public domain. Only issue Frankenstein ever has in movies is the flat top and bolts, as Uni owns the copyright on that look.

Monster Squad Remake Finds Writers

Mark and Brian Gunn have been tapped to write a remake of The Monster Squad for Paramount and Platinum Dunes. The duo were recently tasked to pen the upcoming Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel as well.

Brian is the brother of James Gunn (Slither) and was behind many of James' "PG Porn" web shoots. Mark and Brian also have Mighty Mouse coming up.

The Monster Squad - a redo of Fred Dekker's '80s cult classic - was announced in March with Rob Cohen on board to produce. In April, producer Brad Fuller told us they were uncertain if the film would feature monsters we know or new monsters. "We're definitely using the original film as a blueprint and love the fun parts of it. We have three or four different takes, some stick closely to the original - others are going to be a bit different. It's about sitting down with Rob Cohen and the studio and figuring out which storyline we're going to go with. By hiring the Gunns, it appears some decisions have been made regarding the take.

Now they should just hire James Gunn to direct.:woot:

I'll be honest. I've never heard of this movie before. But apparantly, it's somewhat of a classic?

Its what you call a Cult Classic. I think this came out before you were born. 1985 I think it came out.

Here is the trailer.

It was written by Shane Black, the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

This could turn out to be either really good or really bad. Not alot of room for middle ground.

They said its suppose to be close to the original, with monsters coming to town and kids forming a monster squad.

Seems like they were trying to capitalize on the Ghostbusters popularity back then.

No, the director said it be more like the little rascals meets the universal monsters.

The same director also directed another Cult film you've prolly never seen or heard of. Night Of the creeps.

So your so big into Netflix now, how about you add these two to the list.

meh. not interested in either of the films.

Monster Squad was one of my favorite movies growing up, can't wait to see how this turns out.
