Covid-19 might have been a factor in the decision to have less actors in the cast. Here it is
The 45th sentai series has been revealed. It's also the 45th anniversary of super sentai
Our leader is a white ranger called Zenkaiser. He's a mix of the first super sentai red ranger AkaRed and Big One the leader of the 2nd super sentai. He's very retro looking.
Now here comes the controversial part........
The other rangers are robots. They each represent a past sentai. Their heads are tributes to the past sentai
Red- DaiZyuJin (MMPR Megazord)
Yellow- GaoKing (Wild Force megazord)
Pink- MagiKing (Titan Megazord)
Blue- DaiBouken (Overdrive Megazord)
They can also grow into giant robot forms.
The possible reason for these tribute selections
Daizyujin was the first big success incorporating obvious animal motifs into the mecha (even if not the first one - Liveman had the first animal-looking components, but the combined robot just completely lost any motif).
Gaoranger was an explosive success to the point that they were still selling the mecha through the next year while advertising compatibility with Hurricanger's. So it makes sense that it was chosen to represent animal mecha.
For Boukenger, I guess they wanted a vehicle mecha that had obvious tires and vehicle pieces (ruling out all the early Sentai mecha) but wasn't just cars. For Magiking, it's a similar situation. Early Sentai just didn't have "mystic" mecha or anything like that. They might throw them in if there are secondary robots though, but we're still missing a ninja motif at least (and maybe trains too - there only one train team, but tons of train mecha).
Also 2 out of the 4 mecha were from prior anniversary seasons
Gaoranger (25th anniversary)
Boukenger (30th anniversary)
The collectibles this year are called "Sentai Gears"
