While theres no doubt that it certainly is technically a prequel to alien, I'm sure this movie still works in its own right and tells its own story, rather than simply serving as set up for Alien.

look actors are confused. they were told in 2011 that they are not allowed to admit that its a prequel. now Charlize and Fass noticed what Scott said and they dont know what to do.

I think that not knowing how Earth looks like in the Alien films, adds something good to the atmosphere of the franchise.
Sometimes the imagination works best.

Pretty sure Prometheus *is* going to show us what Earth looks like. Some of the scenes in the trailers are clearly set on Earth, before Prometheus sets out on its maiden voyage.

I think the whole is it/isn't it a prequel thing is pretty clear. It's a prequel in so much as it's set before Alien, with probably some elements that directly link into it, like the Space Jockey ship. But it still tells it's own story that would work whether it was in the alien universe or not.

what do you mean with that? interesting.

I mean from what we know so far, the concept of the story and themes, seems like it would work if it was just a stand alone sci fi film. I mean the idea of humans discovering our origins, how we evolved or were created etc isn't inherently linked to the Alien films. The Alien films don't touch on stuff like that.

Obviously the details, like the bio-engineers being space jockeys, Weyland Corp being involved, link it to the alien mythos. But those elements could be replaced with original things that don't necessarily tie into the Alien mythos, if the film makers chose not to use them.

I think what i mean is, the specific things that make it part of the Alien mythos might not be essential to the story. That's just me speculating though from what we know.

The structure in Prometheus and HR Giger's Harkonnen castle design from the aborted Dune:

Did Scott dig up Giger's old, unused designs? Giger worked on Alejandro Jodorowsky's version of Dune pre-Alien, and Ridley too worked on Dune after Alien, but left the project due to his brother Frank's death. Enter David Lynch. Anyhow, a return to Giger's old designs?

Good spot. Giger was involved in the production design of this film wasn't he? I'm sure i read somewhere that Scott brought him back on board.

Yep, although it might just be him having a minimum input in the film.

"I brought him in, I showed him what we were doing, showed him the story and he liked it a lot. So he's doing a little bit of work for me. He's been doing some murals, big murals, which we'll see in almost one of the first chambers we encounter when we land where we're gonna go."

Cool. Glad to see him back on board, even if it's in a limited capacity. IIRC he was pretty pissed that all the other film makers completely blanked him for the other alien movies.

That is a great trailer. It's got me thinking,
what if there is an early form of the xenomorphs? Like a less evolved, smaller species, similar to face huggers?

Yeah, it's the international trailer, came out a few days ago. Don't remember if anyone posted it here or not, but it definitely contains a lot more than the US trailer.

Awesome catch. Yeah I think Ridley definitely is using concept art that went unused for Alien.

This is some concept art by Ron Cobb from the first Alien movie. This exact imagery wasn't ever used for Alien but it looks like Ridley finally got to use it (with blue tones) in Prometheus.

OH I understand now that ship from the first alien is what they stop from taking off!

And then they leave a warning signal there, now the question!?

Why are they stopping it from Leaving? Also they have obviously activated it because when they find it, it is like all shut down and stuff!

More theories?

I think the Prometheus crew thinks that Space Jockey is trying to destroy Earth...

So that thing in the trailer is a Space Jockey, right?

Crew goes out in search of 'God', finds the 'Devil' instead.

So do we only see Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) in the 2023 scene?

Because if I'm not mistaken, the rest of the movie takes place about sixty years after that?

I wish this movie came out tomorrow. The trailer is just epic, in every which-way.

I was watching it on full blast and my brother just heard it, and was like, "What the hell was that?! Sounds awesome."

Damn straight!
