I got what you were saying, and I think it's a good example. I used 12 Angry Men as an example in an Avengers debate a while back as well, but I was by no means saying that I thought the Avengers script was on the same level as 12 Angry Men.:woot:

I agree with that myself.

It's not something that makes me go "Oh Nolan, you idiot!" as it did work extremely well in the film, but still, it's a shame Two-Face couldn't have reached greater heights.
 
Here are my legitimate complaints about the movie:

1). That it didn't more directly connect with Alien. There was no reason for it not to.

2). That it answered a bit too many questions about the Engineers in the 3rd act. The whole concept that they wanted to destroy humanity I think kinda cheapens the whole premise.

3). That Halloway wasn't written better. I had no problem that the other crew members were cardboard cutouts - that was always kind of the fun of the Alien movies (expendable crew members!) - but Halloway was so integral to the whole character arc with Shaw, he really should've been better fleshed out.

4). I could've used a bit more horror in the film. The two scenes were great, but if there were more, I would've loved it. It probably also would've added more tension to the story and made it more dramatic.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Yep, that was pretty much exactly how I felt. Which I think is the trade off when you do approach a film as "I'm going to get everything I want to do done in this movie." On one hand, Nolan did get it all in there. He made a wonderful film. But the price was that he cut short a character that I thought could have done so much more. However, I'm not sure which one I would advocate for more. I don't want filmmakers holding back simply because they want a trilogy and hurting the film they make, but I dont' want them to cram the film too full.

I personally was okay with Prometheus being more open and bare-bones plot wise. Alien was too. Alien's plot is extremely simple, but the underlying themes, and the questions that the movie raises (and leaves unanswered) were what made it so great to me. Prometheus was done in similar fashion and I liked that. I don't think it's as good as Alien, but I thought it was a very well done movie.

This is a fanboy forum where people were rooting for the movie like crazy before its release. 7 or 8 for them translates into massive disappointment. That poll would have been mostly 10s if this was as good as some people were hoping it'd be. They WANTED to love this movie and the most people can muster is "well it was kinda deep and I loved the robot."

3 and 4 are the ones where I definitely agree. I think with the Halloway thing
They should have done what another poster on here suggested and combined Halloway's transformation with Fifield. Have Halloway get dosed with the goo earlier and watch his transformation more gradually, building the apprehension and having more of a devastating effect on Shaw

I also agree to an extent on 2, but I was pretty okay with it because they still left motivations of the SJ's unanswered.

Eh, that's not accurate, I believe. I loved The Avengers but I gave it an 8.5. I've never given a film a 10/10.
 
Someone on IMDb posted a complete list of Prometheus' plot holes and inconsistencies. I can't post it here due to language, but it's not hard to find.

It's hilarious, infuriating, and depressing all at once.

Then you clearly got more out of it than me. This film didn't engage me in a big way, I felt nothing for the characters and I felt like the themes were brushed over to make way for typical horror nonsense. At best it was a well made movie, but one that doesn't live up to its potential. A disappointment if ever there was.

7 or 8 for people on this board translates into masive disappointment, but by and large the members on this board overreact compared to the general public. When Spider-man 3 was released you had people on here calling it the worst superhero movie ever made. And that was completely ludicrious when you compare it to truly BAD superhero movies. The general public on the other hand was pretty much "meh...it's okay."
 
There is one mystery that I feel hasn't been mentioned, what did David say when he was talking in the Engineers language that made the Engineer snap, behead David, and kill Weyland?

And, like most fanboys, you descend immediately into brainless hyperbole.

"Massive disappointment."

Massive disappointment, would've been 3s, and 4,s and 5s. Massive disappointment would have it getting panned by critics (which it hasn't, it's at 74% on RT, which is comparable to academy award winning films (Crash at 75%), and fan favorites (Batman Begins at 85%). Plus a score of 7.8 on IMDB, which is a very healthy number.

Yes, I can see it being classified a "disappointment" if you were expecting to be one of the best movies ever made. But that's a pretty hyperbolic expectation to have of any film to begin with.
 
I blame Halloway's actor. As badly miscast as Denise Richards was in World is not Enough. He's supposed to be a brilliant scientist, but he sounds like an Xtreme sports meathead.

Which is what I've been saying for a while now.

The people who don't enjoy it are the ones who aren't grasping (or, rather, don't care about) the subtext.

It does seem to be a polarizing film. But then, so was the original Alien. There were some reviewers who called it nothing but an "empty bag of tricks." It is interesting to see the wide range of responses it's garnering in people.
