But you see... Cameron is an action director, not a sci-fi director. His sci-fi movies are all more action than sci-fi.

Really? I seem to remember liking The Abyss a lot.

But, in any case, read prev post about Aliens Special Edition.

You're very wrong I think. It's a lot more profound. I was never a "big" fan of Aliens. I mean I liked it... but I had read the novelization when I was a kid and I thought the movie was... well, a little empty. It lacked a certain heart.

The Special Edition inserts all the scenes that were intended to be in the movie. They're not really B.S. scenes either... most of them are poignant scenes of Ripley (finding out about her biological daughter on Earth for instance). Because of the Special Edition, it went from being OK to being one of my top 5 movies of all time.

I guess I should be seeing that Special Edition ASAP in my opinion, because I already love Aliens (by far my favourite of the series) for being a superlative action/horror movie. Although I don't feel like Ripley's parenthal issues needed more screen time, they are indeed the most interesting sci-fi aspect of the story (being decades in suspended animation just to wake up and find out everyone you knew is dead, that always seemed very poignant to me).

Just to save this from being a completely off-topic discussion, I do see something similar being explored in a Transformers movie, and yes, that's the problem with Michael Bay directing. When he tries to put sci-fi elements in his movies, we get something like The goddam Island.

I mean, that movie gave away the main twist in the friggin' trailer. That's the problem with Michael Bay. You always get the impression he wants to get the themes and characterization out of the way as soon as possible, because he's clearly more interested in the action.

Which is weird, because the script as it is has way too much set-up.

But, as a lot of people already said, we could do a lot worse.

That movie has like 10 minutes of encounters with the aliens and endless amounts of crazy-military-guy-trying-to-take-over-the-whole-operation.

It's ok, but it could be A LOT better as a sci-fi movie.

Great way to separate things into black and white. Like there are no fans who are in the gray area. Quit being so naive.

You saying, "stop whining and accept" pretty much sounds to me like, "Shutup and take it with no vaseline". Nope, sorry, I'm not gonna do that. There is nothing wrong with change yeah, but if you think that all the changes they are making are solely to enhance story and to make the Transformers mythos a better thing then you are fooling yourself. The majority of the changes being made are to create new toylines, and Bay is not fighting it because he's getting a percentage of the revenue. So here's the movie so far, "Let's make a movie with big explosions, big fighting robots and then we'll sell a lot of toys". If its any deeper than that then please let me know.

I think you are being a little too pessimistic if you think all this movie will consist of is big explosions and robots figthing each other. Steven Speilberg doesn't produce garbage.

Oh yes he does, he even directs garbage (e.g. The Terminal, Amistad, Hook, etc).

A few examples of Spielberg-produced garbage:

Memoirs of a Gueisha, Men in Black II, Jurassic Park 3, Evolution, Shrek, Twister (urgh), The Flintstones movie, The Goonies (I know it's nostalgic, but have you seen it lately?), etc.

Just like some of the best Twighlight Zone episodes are all human drama with the "sci-fi" only being apparent at the very end... so too I guess with that movie.

And re Aliens... you'd be surprise how much 10 seconds of a face reaction of Ripley as she enters the compound changes the meaning of the whole movie (to me at least).

Poor Uwe Bowl.... I can see that guy comitting suicide or overdosing one day. It can't be good being so universally derided (although Michael Bay seems to handle it well).

I loved ALL of those movies. Those movies are far from garbage in other peoples' eyes.

Movies you selected that are far from garbage

Memoirs of a Geisha
Shrek
JP3
Goonies

What kind of movies do you like where you can call these movies garbage?

You love Hook?

I can see someone loving The Terminal despite it's corny and heavy-handed sentimentalism and/or Amistad despite its manipulative political correctness and mushy Hollywood drama... or even because of those things (hey, whatever floats your boat). But Hook? Come on.

Ok, here we go:

Memoirs of a Geisha

AKA Memoirs Of A Chinese Woman Speaking English With A Japanese Accent i.e. all those asians are the same anyway so why bother etc.

nosebleed said:

AKA An Ode To Fart Jokes And Hammy "Be Yourself" Message, i. e. this was funny for like five minutes, though I always laugh at Donkey despite the fact Murphy is basically reprising his role in "Mulan".

(And I love animation. Miyazaki is one of my favourite directors ever, and I like everything from Pixar (never seen "Cars", though).)

Here are 20 examples of non-garbage cinema in my opinion:

http://www.ymdb.com/stanleymoore/l32669_ukuk.html

It's been a while since I last updated this list, but those are all masterpieces IMO.

Eh...to each his own. A lot of the movies you have on ymdb are before my time and I have never been recommended for me to watch. Great movies don't alway s have to be thought provoking cinematic masterpieces for them to be good and fun. Call me someone with poor taste I guess because I like almost all of those movies you listed as garbage and have seen a big whopping 2 films on your list.

Lol, I like a lot of Hollywood popcorn stuff too, including most of Spielberg's work.

I love Jaws, Close Encounters, E.T., Riders of the Lost Ark, War of the Worlds, etc. And I also like several of his "artistic" movies (I love A.I. and Schindler's List, and I thought Munich was very good).

So don't get me wrong, Spielberg is one of the best american directors of all time, he's just not impervious to a few missteps in his career.

I'm tired of this Bay bashing AHHH!! (lol)

The Island was a good movie!

wow........................just wow...............

Did you know that, when filming the sex scene in The Island, Scarlett Johansson wanted to show her breasts because it would make the scene more realistic but Bay insisted that she kept her bra on?

That's the kind of guy Michael Bay is.

I guess no gratuitous Megan Fox shots for us eh?

edit: How do say NO to something like that???

Oh, there will be plenty of gratuitous shots, they'll just be PG-friendly. I'm guessing in the midst of destruction her clothes will be ripped in strategic places, stuff like that. I mean, I don't know if they will, but they should.
