If the show really needed an overhaul and you were to get rid of some of the cast, which actors and actresses would you like to come in and replace them? They would, of course, have to be new characters, but which actors (preferably more established, perhaps even from being on another show before) would help the show and change the dynamic and give it a real boost?

I've mentioned before in other threads that I've thought that the Ward part should've featured an actor who could carry the show himself apart from Coulson or May, and maybe even has been the lead on another show previously. Even with one actor different it could make every up their game as the chemistry would be different.

Keifer Sutherland as Jack Baurer.

That's it, just him. SHIELD wouldn't need anyone else.

But since we're not talking about 24 or any other scenarios which exclude SHIELD or take place outside of the series, how about some actual suggestions?

Obviously this show can't be good without having major superheroes from the comics in every single role. The obvious solution is to wipe out every member of the cast (every single human being on the planet despises them, after all), and replace them with the following:

Chloe Grace Moretz as Squirrel Girl
Michael Chiklis as Gorilla Man
Tom Cruise as Man-Thing
Andy Serkis as Howard the Duck
Jim Carrey as Obnoxio the Clown
and led by David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury Sr.

My suggestions:

Kill off Skye and bring back Agent Amador as a permanent cast member. Amador is far more interesting already, she's a certified badass and she would bring a welcome dose of conflict to the cast. Pascale Armand is also a much better actress than any of the current younger cast. The show would benefit greatly from her presence.

Killing Ward would be okay, but keeping him on after Skye's demise would lead to far more interesting character development for him. Traumatize that sucker, lay the guilt on him and force him to grow as a person and he'll stop boring the **** out of everyone.

Coulson, May and FitzSimmons are fine as is. The writing needs to tighten up, though. Whedon and his crew need to get serious and present a team on this show that could exist in the same universe as the SHIELD that we will see in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So far, they haven't done that. Apart from Coulson, May and Amador the field agents (and civilian) on AoS would be woefully out of place in the MCU. The show has six months to shape up before the comparisons really begin and AoS comes out looking even worse than it already does.

I never said they should have superheroes in every single role. I just want decent and more compelling actors who are more interesting to watch.

For example, most of the cast of Castle would've been better in this. Even most of the cast of Warehouse 13 or some ex cast members from Dollhouse, Eureka or Alphas. Even having one person from one of these older shows could've made the difference here.

There are various actors who have been in a show before who aren't doing anything in particular now, just doing the occasional guest star or recurring (but not main) role. They could easily have been signed up for this.

Kill off Ward (I think it will happen) in a dramatic fashion. He's been Skye's Obi-Wan thus far, and this could galvanize her into a more hardened and compelling character.

Bring in Mrs. Patch as a replacement cause she was cool as hell.

Break up Fitz/Simmons, have Simmons abducted, suspected dead on a mission. Bring in an older character to play off of Fitz' geekiness more effectively. Have Simmons return later, forced to work for the antagonists.

I wouldn't take anybody out,but I'd add Cobie as Maria Hill and Mark Valley as Clay Quartermain ASAP

Cobie can't play until HIMYM is over. But Mark Valley would've been a great addition to the show, especially if he had been there in the first place. He was great in Human Target. The show needs someone like that who, even on his or her own is interesting to watch.

While I've enjoyed the show for what it is so far, I do think they missed out on the opportunity to integrate established characters into the series. I see no real reason why they couldn't have used comic characters like Jimmy Woo or Clay Quartermain (speaking of Mark Valley, he'd make an excellent Quartermain in my opinion). I know Joss wanted to create entirely new characters, but I don't see how including a few names from the comics that won't be featured players in the movies would be a bad thing.

As I've said here and in other places, I'm ok with the show as it stands. It's certainly not what I was hoping for however - I don't need it to be "dark & gritty," but I was hoping the show would have a slightly less sophomoric tone. But hey, I'll keep watching to see the story unfold, I'm a sucker like that lol.

Mark Valley as Clay Quartermain is brilliant. I'd bring him on as a rival to Ward. Then, I would kill Ward, and as said, galvanize Skye into a real agent. I would also reveal her birth name was Jessica Drew and she has unknown powers.

If I wanted a Human Target shoutout, I'd bring on Chi McBride as G.W. Bridge, too (recurring obviously).

I honestly would put Coulson on a bus (that is, send him away/off the team). An evil bus, maybe just for a season. Let Jasper Sitwell and/or Maria Hill take that role on the squad, much to the shagrin of the team who's used to Coulson's way of doing things, but it turns out the near team lead(s) are just as awesome in their own way.

I honestly would faze FitzSimmons out completely. I like the idea of breaking them up, having Simmons abducted working for the antagonists (maybe why Coulson gets on the evil Bus?) and Fitz then changing as a character. Eventually though, I'd replace him too with some old polymath/one man science division... a Hugh Laurie (in his real accent) would be a super-win, but I'd more likely put in a Corey Reynolds or Courtney B. Vance to add some color... or just put in Ron Glass from the pilot as the bio guy.

Kill off Skye. Bring in Akela Amador. Much better actress.

Get rid of Ward as well, bring in a grizzled hardass Agent played by an actor who can sell the Black-ops badass thing better than Dalton does . Think a Frank Grillo/Philip Winchester type actor.

And for the love of all things holy, make FitzSimmons actual characters with depth not just some good looking cardboard cutouts who spew pointless technobabble all day. Those 2 are actually good actors. Especially Castedecker, he was pretty good in The Fades

Half of the cast of SHIELD seem almost like a variation on the Scooby Gang. FitzSimmons and Skye seem to act in a similar way and all seem a bit amateurish and more like groupies.
I think this show needs someone like Felicity/ Emily Bett Rickards on Arrow. Not her of course, but someone similar in two regards:

1) She has more of the right balance between humour and seriousness as the geeky sidekick than FitzSimmons.

2) She started as a guest character who was introduced but quickly gained popularity and was promoted to a series regular for the 2nd season. She almost seems to be the female lead at times, or at least the one who is most integrated into the main plot.

I would get rid of the two scientists and bring in two field agents. Probably bring in Eliza Dushku and Enver Gjokaj. Maybe bring in an older scientist later on in the series.

She would make a good Mockingbird.

I'm not too fussed about Joss killing people, I knew what I was in for by watching this show, but at least resolve some story lines like the "will they or won't they" with SkyeWard and at least have them spend the night together.

The Mark Valley as Quatermain idea is so Zod Damned brilliant it makes me angry it didn't occur to me. Now I feel like a dumbass for thinking my go to man Jeff Donovan was the only choice. I'll keep him in the mix anyway for Clay. Here's my list. Notice it's not filled with the insipidly young:

Mark Valley or Jeff Donovan for tough as nails Clay Quartermain, who has a simmering rivalry with Coulson since he felt that Fury relied to much on the mysterious, even to Clay, Phil.

Morris Chesnut as G.W. Bridge. A veteran brought out of retirement like May and the ultimate team player, Bridge hates conflict and always tries ro mend fences in ways Phil can't as team leader. Give him a romantic past with May. Romance isn't just for the under 30 set.

Katie Sackoff as Bobbi "Mockingbird" Morse. She's a two for as both a biologist and an agent personally trained by Fury. Her expertise in biological sciences also helps with her speciality as a deep cover operative since she uses cutting edge science to create bio mimic tech based disguises for herself and the team. She often mentions the on again off again romance with one of SHIELD's top field agents, whom of course we eventually learn is Clint "Hawkeye" Barton.

Tap Jon Cho as a semi regular as Jimmy Woo. Drop hints as to his connection to a worldwide criminal conspiracy (Atlas, natch).

Bring in Ron Glass as the resident tech expert/forensics guy whom we know has more info on Phil's time in Tahiti.

Finally, if you can't have Jeff Donovan as Clay I say bring him in as a re-occuring villain. The one that would suit him best? Former SHIELD Agent, Super Soldier Serum derivative subject and all around pro badass... TASKMASTER! Imagine TM just coming in and laying everyone out, without any superstrength, invulnerability or energy manipulation powers? Easy to do on tv, I think.

The list I made also has another virtue in that we get a much more diverse looking cast. Sorry, her real world heritage not withstanding, but Bennet looks very white leaving May the only obvious non-Caucasian on the team. Just saying, a SHIELD show should have brought the comics diverse characters to the small screen. It baffles me that they even went in this terrible direction.

Personally, whilst I'm fine with the current cast, I'd like an overhaul. Ideally I'd have Agent Ward and Simmons killed off, and have Skye completely betray the team but dissapear after Ward's death, and have her a recurring character whose true motives we can never turly be sure about - occasionally assisting the team.

Firstly, especially since HIMYM is ending, I say bring in Maria Hill as a lead. Have her there to keep Couslon under control following Skye's betrayal and the two deaths. She'd bring a nice dynamic to the team and would play well off of Coulson.

Keep Melinda May as a field agent, but bring in two more as well. I love the suggestion of Mark Valley as Clay Quartermain - he was great in Human Target, and would be very different to Ward by bringing in a more seasoned, arrogant and hardened agent. Alongside Quartermain I'd like to see Bobbi Morse brought in, ideally for me played by Laura Vandervoort. Have her be a younger agent who isn't afraid to stand up to Clay's arrogance and question Coulson and Hill, but always remain loyal to the team.

Bring back a Fitz that is changed by Simmons' death, and play on the way he seems to get carried away if Simmons doesn't stop him and hold him together. I'd personally like Dilshad Vadsaria to come in as a new agent in the science division - either from the comics or a new, made up character - she seems like she'd play well off of Fitz and definitely has a good balance of playing serious and comical.

The supporting cast could remain as it is really (Agent Blake, Agent Sitwell etc.), plus as I mentioned earlier I'd like Skye to become a more mysterious supporting character.

Oh, and no idea how you'd fit him in, but I'd like Daniel Dae Kim as Jimmy Woo as well. :woot:

And change the title to just SHIELD, dammit. The "Agents of" just pisses me off. :o

If I were going to make any adjustments to the cast it probably wouldn't be until the second season. I think I would make the reveal that Skye is actually Jessica Jones and then transition her off of AOS and into a Heroes for Hire TV show. Skye as she is right now would fit pretty good as the PI portion of the group.

Mark Valley as Quartermain is a great suggestion. I'd be totally on board with him coming in as May's former partner who got seriously injured because of a mistake that she made. Cobie Smulders joining the team in an almost regular capacity would also be a great addition. Finally bring back Agent Amador. Think actress seemed to really bring some weight to the role could definitely be a good asset.

Ryan McPartlin as Clay Quartermain

I definitely like Mark Valley. However, Quartermain is supposed to be a very competent agent but also a genuinely affable and warm presence. Valley can definitely be a badass and he can deadpan, but I don't think he can nail the lightheartedness Clay should have like Ryan could. Doesn't hurt that McPartlin is also a dead ringer for the character physically.

Russell Wong as Jimmy Woo

Ever since Vanishing Son I've been a fan of Wong's. A ridiculously underutilized talent, imho. Woo is completely in his wheelhouse.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Monica Rambeau

Rambeau's basic origin as a harbor patrol Lt. turned super-powered would play out, but with her going to SHIELD instead of the Avengers for help developing control over her powers. The dramatic tension going forward being that she is unlike anything they've seen and they're on eggshells as to whether she's a threat to others.

Jeffrey Donovan as Brent Jackson

Crackshot SHIELD analyst and opportunist.

Keith David as G.W. Bridge

I would be totally on board with actual Marvel SHIELD characters in the main cast. This show almost feels like I'm watching a Star Trek show with a group of redshirts as the leads and I'm wondering where Kirk, Spock and McCoy are. It feels Marvel adjacent instead of feeling Marvel. I get that I can't expect Captain America and Thor to feature into each episode but still... I get that part of the concept here is making a series out of the One-Shots, but here's the thing... I don't care about the One-Shots.

Totally agree. The show needs at least a couple of actual Marvel characters as regulars. Maria Hill and Quartermain would go a long way towards making that connection to the Marvel universe more solid. That said, I am still really enjoying the show and I can't wait to see what else they have in store.

Show her picture to 1,000 people and I am guessing she wouldn't be ID'd as Asian, African (:word:) or even Latino (Ok, maybe some would take a stab in the dark and say Latino. :oldrazz: ) by most of them. Sorry bro. That girl looks Caucasian to the max. And this show has one non-white regular. Wow, I never knew boobs could really blind peoples judgment so much. AND I LOVE BOOBS. :woot:
