Let's not kid ourselves people, MJ is supposed to be a drop dead gorgeous chick that no one would imagine that Peter Parker would ever stand a chance with. Even though Peter Parker was never portrayed as an uber geek like he was in the Raimi films, in high school Pete was kinda in the "friend zone" with MJ and she went on to become a world famous model/actress.

If MJ were cast in the 90's she would've been played by Cindy Crawford but Raimi kinda ruined that image by casting Kirsten Dunst and now we have another actress playing an "average" looking MJ. I'm not saying that Shailene is ugly by any means, but she's not exactly the type of girl that all the guys would be asking to the prom.

Gwen Stacey is the girl next door, not MJ. MJ is the unattainable girl that Peter happened to end up with. Maybe Shailene can act her ass off, maybe she has connections in the industry that vouched for her, but what I know is that there are young women in Hollywood that are DROP DEAD gorgeous AND have the talent to play MJ, so it's hard for me to swallow this pill.


The fact that she was cast, along with the recent picture of Spidey's costume reverting back to what is essentially Raimi's look has me worried about the production. I loved the Amazing Spider-Man more than any of the other films, but any joy that's left over from TASM is now squandered. Maybe a trailer a will change my mind, but I'm just not happy with some of the major decisions made on this film...

He's being dismissive of an actress before he's seen the film solely based on how she looks. Obviously it's not sexist to comment on someone's looks, but basing your opinion and discussion of a women's worth based only on how hot she is is pretty bad.

Those pics make me very unimpressed with her, makeup or no makeup I agree that MJ is supposed to be not only beautiful but a very sexy and feisty young girl.

I'm dismissing her based solely on how she looks. We're allowed to judge by what we know. I've never seen her act and I know she doesn't even come close to my visual of what MJ is supposed to look like. If they cast Channing Tatum as Bruce Wayne I would have the same reaction. Not an ugly fellow by any means but he doesn't come close to my visual of what Bruce Wayne is supposed to look like.

It would be different if Shailene were a well known actress. Then you could make the argument that someone basing their opinion purely on looks is unjustified.....but in this case, she is a much lesser known actress than Emma Stone so someone basing their current opinion purely on her looks is actually going to be very common.

Trust me, makeup will change everything. BTW, I'd like to see those drop dead gorgeous girls you're thinking of w/o makeup too, you might feel a little different when you see them first thing in the morning!

And being drop dead gorgeous isn't the only factor here, she has to be able to act and Shailene CAN act. And chemistry is another big thing too and I'm sure she had a screentest with Andrew and I trust Marc's judgement that he saw something special there. He's been spot on with the casting so far. Just give her a chance, she might just surprise you

My thoughts on the Woodley photos:

I guess they're going for a different sort of MJ. Woodley is fine, but certainly no knockout (and for those about to knock on Dunst, she was HAWT in 2002's film). Still, I'll wait to make a final judgement on her based on two things: her performance, and how she's filmed.
