Should they make another Punisher movie? - Part 1

^ Well yeah it could of been but a film being perfect is nearly impossible because all films good or bad have flaws. But hopefully Punisher one day can get a good film franchise run that it deserves.

If I could start the franchise over to where we never had a Punisher movie, I'd like to do it in three movies spanning decades.

The first is in the 70's right after his tour of duty. This is where we get to see his training and his psyche during the Vietnam war. The losing of his family driving him over the edge. The punishment he dishes out and his starting his one man war.

The 2nd one takes place in the late 80's and he's somewhat of an urban legend, but the Police, Feds and of course the mob know he is real. During the movie he's caught on camera and shown to the world that there is indeed a Punisher. He's captured by the police and put on trial. He's put in Rykers and such.

The 3rd one is mid 2000's. He's been fighting this war for over 30's, he's beaten and scarred heavily. This is the one where you go balls to the wall with everything. The first two movies led up to this.

As far as a story for each, I obviously don't have any ideas. Just certain scenes I have in my head or certain issues to develop like Hensleigh did with the 2004 Punisher.

That'd be kinda tough to do though, to get an actor that could play the character through all the decades. Old age make-up still isn't as good as it could be, and there wouldn't be enough money to use the de-aging technology. It's a novel idea, but no way it could be done with high quality.

I'd rather just get on with it and have Frank be a grizzled, hard as nails bad ass who's been The Punisher for years. Stevenson can easily pull that off. Hell, it's been 8 years since Jane's Punisher, so he could even pull it off. Put the origin in flashbacks/dream sequences and be done with it. Just give me a great Punisher story with good characters that aren't goofy ass Adam West villains and I'll be happy.

I've noticed in some pics, that Jane's got a few scars on his face. That just adds to the grizzled Frank Castle look.

And of course Stevenson, you know looks like he always does.

Yea, put me in the camp that's for any future punisher movie should be PAST the origin stage. The tragedy should have already happened rather than play out again. Make allusions, flashbacks etc, but I want to be in a different place this time around.

If any of the old actors would to comeback I want it to be Ray Stevenson. I like him better as Frank Castle/The Punisher than Thomas Jane.

I thought both were awesome. To be honest if I don't even think I can decide who I liked more; each of them brought something great to the role. Every time I try to figure out who might be the better Frank I'm like "Yeah, but Jane had (x), maybe he was better. But no, because Stevenson was great at (y)..."

I'd be happy with either lol.

Why are you assuming it'd be a new take? And are you guys conjoined twins or something?

You know what they should do? Get Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson...and make a SIN CITY-esque THE PUNISHER: WAR JOURNAL.

I know you're being sarcastic, but The Punisher done like Sin City is the worst idea ever.

Since the opening post is in the last thread...

Should they ever try to make a forth one and if so how do they break this cycle?
First, you need to identify some of the reasons the cycle exists:

  • The Punisher's rogues are flat. So far, Frank has been mowing down mobsters and thugs, and the evil they do is only slightly worse than in the average R-rated movie. Frank's targets in the comics are genuinely horrible people. The movies should reflect that.
  • Every studio that has had its hands on the Punisher has aimed for a franchise. So we keep getting stories with no tension, because we know the Punisher overcomes in the end and moves to his next kill. There needs to be less of focus on what the sequel to a Punisher reboot looks like and more on how to tell the best story possible in one go.
  • None of these movies have shown us why we should care. We know the surface story- guy loses family to criminals, guy wages war on crime. But nothing interesting has been explored yet. Who is Frank punishing, criminals or himself? For how long can a man with his kill count evade the law? All we've gotten is a moment's pause to consider this before we're back to the gore porn, which insinuates the only reason people like the Punisher is because he's Marvel's Rambo.
These are just a few. There are obviously more. I like the character and would like even more for the powers that be to do right by him. But with this many failures, Marvel's best bet now is to get one good film out there and move on to other characters. Wait until there's time to ensure quality, release it when the competition's slim. Then, at least one of these will be worth talking about.

Why are you assuming it'd be a new take? And are you guys conjoined twins or something?

why wouldnt it be a new take? I mean I guess it depends when they make a new movie, which as a lot have said wont be soon. Other than the fact that you want a previous actor why would they?
-Jane is from almost ten years ago and his version of the character has already been rebooted. It didnt do well in theaters. Yes after factoring home video sales, rentals, etc. it was a success, but I dont think it really resonated with audiences that much. I don't hear many talk about it nowadays. And Im pretty sure they wouldnt make a movie with the mindset "We wont make bank in theaters, we'll make it in DVD sales" If that's the case they'd probably just make it straight to DVD Jane could come back to the role if he wanted, but I highly doubt they would bring back the Punisher by going back and getting a previous actor.

-Stevenson could, but idk where Marvel stands with having actors playing 2 roles in the MCU. Stevenson is Volstagg in the Thor series. Also his film failed. A lot. ~10 million bucks on a $35 million production budget. 45% user rating on RT and 6.0 on IMDB, So audiences clearly didnt like it or like it that much

So after rebooting one take and having an unsuccessful iteration of the character why, when they decide to bring the character back to the screen, would they go back to a previous actor? How is that a good decision?

How is it any worse of a decision than rebooting the film for the fourth time? lol because clearly the reboots aren't really working out for them......

because a reboot wont have the baggage of any of the cast from the failed adaptations. It already has the load of being "The Punisher" so why would you add more baggage to that especially when none of the cast were that well accepted anyway

Well, I would disagree with you there. Tom Jane was very well received and the biggest praise PWZ got was that Ray Stevenson was spot on for Frank. So, if anything, it seems less risky to me to use either of those guys than to go with someone completely new.

Keep what works, get rid of what doesn't. They've already proven that a fresh slate isn't always the best solution.

I agree with this assesment.

It doesn't even matter to me anymore if they reuse Jane or Stevenson or go for someone new. Aslong as they make another Punisher film and its good or really good. All a fan of the character can want for me anyways.

I'd love for another movie and hopefully someone who is a fan of the character could finally do him some justice.
