The Dark Knight Rises Skyfall vs. TDKR

I think it would be redundant to see Nolan attached to another franchise. Right now he's one of the few guys who can make whatever they want.

Yes i know he's a huge fan , but i dont think it would be wise for him to attach himself to the most formulaic series that exists.

And i've always read that the Brocolli family keeps a very tight leash on the director's work. I dont think right now he needs to submit to that.

This was my first thought after seeing the film. Mendes essentially made the Bond film Nolan would've made. I don't see him doing one now because of it...which is a shame because I was really hoping to see a Craig Bond film directed by Nolan....

I disagree.
Skyfall was certainly influenced by TDK, but saying that Mendes basically made a Nolan film is quite severely undermining both directors.

I think that Nolan wants to make movies based on his own ideas, and he included some Bond elements into Batman franchise, (like Mr. Fox based on Q.)

Maybe after a few years he may consider directing a Bond movie, but I don't see him doing that anytime soon.

I saw Skyfall today in IMAX.
I really enjoyed it, though not quite as much as I thought I would. This might change once I see it a couple of more times, but as of now, Casino Royale is still the superior film in my opinion.

But is it better than TDKR?
Yes.

It's not nearly as ambitious of a film, but it succeeds in a lot of places TDKR doesn't.
One good example would be pacing.

Also, if the cinematographer doesn't get an Oscar nod, then we'll officially know that the Academy is blind.

Good summation of it. My sentiments exactly.

Saw Skyfall last night, absolutely stunning film definitely one of the best Bond films of all time. I did see and feel some resemblance to TDK in many ways, I have to say I still liked Rises just as much as Skyfall though, no reason why I wouldn't.

I wonder what he will do next? Will he expand his string of big budget films or will he make something smaller? I'd he rather do the latter. I think it would be wise to take a break from monster scaled filmmaking to do a smaller, thematically dense picture, and reassess the relatonship between the two. I fear Nolan focused too much on the spectacle in TDKR and not on the themes and character. He needs to strike again the keen balance of studio filmmaking with an indie perspective that he so boldly did in TDK and Inception.

Its funny you said that about spectacle , because i was reading the art and making and Nolan stated that when he made TDK and Begins , he thought about action set pieces before knowing how they would appear on the story. He knew that such scenes should exist ,and when they should appear (not how). He also said in Rises everything was much more organic , and every spectacle we see was according to what the felt the story needed (and not the other way around)

I agree with you. He should go smaller , but i also know that right now he can make that choice. In the future maybe he wont. So i kinda understand if he took the chance and make whatever he wants to do , in terms of big scale cinema.

Disagree. I still think Nolan could make a much different Bond film and he's a very suitable director for that character. I wouldn't be surprised if Nolan does indeed work on Bond 24.

I've got to give the edge to SKYFALL. In terms of pure spectacle, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES wins hands down, as its just a bigger, more expansive movie. In terms of a cohesive, watchable piece of art with good exploration of its themes and concepts and good execution from actors and the rest of the filmmaking team, SKYFALL wins hands down. The acting is better and more nuanced, the writing is better, the humor is better, the pacing is better, the action is more believeable and visceral, and I think there’s no contest in terms of cinematography.

I do think it’s somewhat amusing that while the influences in his action score is obvious, Thomas Newman kind of does Hans Zimmer better than Hans Zimmer. That man can flat score fireworks (See MEET JOE BLACK).

As far as Sam Mendes making the Bond film Nolan would…I don’t think so. I think evidenced by his Batman films and INCEPTION, Nolan's Bond film would likely be much, much larger in scale. Mendes made a very personal, almost subtle, Bond film. He and Nolan have almost opposite approaches, save for a desire to ground things a bit, which the entire Bond reboot has aimed for.

As far as similarities to Nolan's Batfilms go, in particular THE DARK KNIGHT...they were pretty basic and minimal, really limited to one key section of the film, and I think Mendes came out ahead there comparitively. SKYFALL is just a more consistent film than THE DARK KNIGHT RISES or THE DARK KNIGHT (though TDK has enough high points that I wouldn't want to begin deciding which is the better film between SKYFALL and TDK).

This movie made me know how Joker feels about TDKR. I liked Skyfall and enjoyed it for alot of reasons, but i just didn't leave the theatre feeling incredibly satisfied with the experience like I did with TDKR and Looper.

Intellectually and technically the movie's very good, but I just never felt all that much tension in the film, especially the third act. Performances were all great though. I think an early real death coudl've helped the tension alot, to know that the writers would be willing to do anything, but as it is, all they implant is the idea that even when [blackout]Bond dies on screen, he still isn't dead[/blackout], therefore killing any tension in any scene where he's in supposed peril. Anyways, I'm sure I'll like this movie more with repeated viewings, and it's still my second favorite Bond film behind Casino Royale. The hype that was built up around this movie just put my expectations up way too high for this, and now that I've torn down that wall, I'm hoping I'll find the film to be much more enjoyable the second time around. For now 8/10

In short, this film was very much like TDKR, but the end of TDKR was just alot stronger and built up much better for me with a lot more emotional weight. Maybe I just didn't care about M enough, haha. For me TDKR > Skyfall

Saw Skyfall. There's a lot of comparisons to be made to all three of the Nolan Batman films in certain elements, really.

Neither of two younger women in Skyfall are as meaningfull as the women in TDKR. They're a side show at best, which is good in the sense that it doesn't take the focus off Bond. Obviously M is where it's at in Skyfall. Pacing is a bit better in Skyfall. Cinematography in both films is great, but I might give a slight edge to Skyfall...I have to see Skyfall again. I like that Bond seemed to have a lot of lines, and they were good lines...the lines for Bruce/Batman in TDKR were disappointing.

Skyfall didn't take the franchise or the character anywhere differently imo... Great movie but not once did it make me feel any tension for bond.... I liked the idea of him losing a step but regardless he still beat the baddies with ease.... Javier Bardem was amazing... The ladies of the film were quite forgettable.... The Score and cinematography were great... My favorite bond film but it didn't live up to its hype imo

Best parts of Skyfall were the cinematography and score. And some great dialogue too.

Bardem really didn't work for me, as much as I hate to say it.

Bardem was a brilliant villain, hes was made most of the film for me.

By the way, Batlobster what do you think of the new deftones?

Absolutely love it man. They topped Diamond Eyes for me, and I'm a HUGE fan of that album.

Anyone notice the similarity of an injured older bond who's lost a step having to come back when called into duty with batman in TDKR?

I'm sure it wasn't deliberate but i actually enjoyed that aspect in both films.

Yeah accept the way it was done in skyfall didn't really make me believe that he lost a step at all

I loved the women in SKYFALL. Naomi Harris wearing that dress in the last scene...:hrt:

I liked Skyfall and TDKR equally. However, if you take Bane out of the equation, I'd put Skyfall ahead of it.

Skyfall is not as good as I thought it would be, but it's still way better than TDKR.

Skyfall > TDKR.

How could it be deliberate? Skyfall finished filming long before TDKR even came out.

Disagree. I still think Nolan could make a much different Bond film and he's a very suitable director for that character. I wouldn't be surprised if Nolan does indeed work on Bond 24.

But Skyfall barely even has any romance or sexuality in it (one obligatory scene in the middle), that is so NOLAN! :oldrazz:

I hope he gets to one day. I counted references to License to Kill and The World is Not Enough in TDKR and Inception definitely had a nod to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Meanwhile Casino Royale borrowed from Batman Begins and Skyfall borrowed heavily from The Dark Knight.

It is like the filmmaker and franchise are doing a dance right now.

I'd rather see Nolan make original films or even adaptations like the Prestige rather than hop onto another franchise, personally.

The forbidden dance :oldrazz:

So Nolan can't make something original while using James Bond as a character?
