The Amazing Spider-Man Spider-Man Reboot Costume Part 4 - "What's that in his eye??" - Part 5

I look at the differences this way:

Interpretation - Im going to make my version of spideys classic suit.
Redesign - I'm going to make an entirely different spidey suit.

Well, to be honest, I think the differences in the two terms, in their most basic definition, are practically interchangeable. Sure, they can become more distinct the further from the center you go, but for the sake of conversation, I think I'd probably list this suit under interpretation. Yeah, there are a few glaring differences, but all the basic bullet points are there.

Exactly.

I think regardless of the exact definitions, both sides are essentially saying the same thing....

Haha, yep. xD

pretty sure you'll be able to see peter's eyes through the mask. spidey has a major problem as you can't emote due to his entire face covered which is why sam ripped off the mask every five seconds.

none of the face covered
supeman
x-men
iron man

part of the face covered
batman
green lantern
judge dredd

all of the face covered
spider-man

big disadvantage with getting emotions across, allowing the audience to see the eyes would help a lot.

Nope. You won't.

We can't see his eyes in any of the official pictures.

Hell, you couldn't even see them in the trailer.

I guess not, but there most be 'some' reason for the little holes in the eye lens.

I assume it's the whole realism thing. We know we're going to have a scene where he gets the material/s for and designs his costume, so I'm guessing a mesh material will be amongst those. At least, if he's testing the visibility, etc... lol

Just because in promo shots we can't see the eyes does not mean that when Webb want us to, we wont. Heck, look at some of the other set pics, his eyes are quite visible. I think it will be a matter of different lenses and angles that will allow us to see his eyes, depending on what Webb wants for that scene.

Its movie magic.

I know I've seen peter's eyes in a couple of shots, I didn't imagine that, did I?

I agree, but the thing that's making me think otherwise is that we've only seen them in SOME set pictures and NONE, NONE of the official promos. Hell, they're not even in the trailer.

Not to mention that the lenses don't look like this in any of the official shots...

Probably because its not the intent to be able to see them ALL of the time.

Another - and equally possible - idea is that they use lenses like the ones you posted to help the stunt men see easier.

But, if they were supposed to be seen sometimes, don't you think we'd get at least a single bloody official picture where we can actually see his eyes?

I'm still 50/50 on having his eyes semi-visible. It makes sense for close ups scenes and to show emotion, but I'd rather they remain reflective and well, not semi-transparent.

Yep! Which would explain why we haven't seen his eyes in any of the official pictures. Mystery solved. :woot:

maybe when spidey is having a fight the lenses are opaque but when he is having dialogue they are semi transparent. you NEED to see his eyes becuase if you don't see the eyes or mouth then the emotion has to be convayed through gestures and that looks stupid.

the only character whose mouth and eyes are covered but gets across emotion is darth vader and as a villian he can get away with broader gestures a heroes performance has to be more nuanced and subtle. look at iron man, they introduced the 'helmet cam' to get around this problem.

You don't need to see his eyes. It removes the mystery of the character. How many times are they going to cut close to his face to show "emotion"?

But again, seeing his eyes to convey emotion is something I'm 50/50 on. I like the idea, but at the same time, I don't. lol

first and foremost for me is 'performance' and that lists higher for me than 'look'. I wont be a hyrprocrite, I was APOPLECTIC with rage when dredd takes off his helmet but they could have kept the helmet on and made the glass over the eyes semi transparent.

Spider-Man having his mask on in the previous trilogy wasn't a problem.

Subtle head gestures worked.

Spidey: "We sure showed him!"

Aunt May: "What do you mean we?"

*Spidey tilts his head downwards/to the side*

Spidey: Oh...

They managed to get a good performance and retain the look in the previous trilogy, I'm positive they can do that for this franchise too.

that's one scene and small sections are fine, long dialogue and it all falls apart.

batman - WHERE WERE THE OTHER DRUGS GOING?!! - fine

whole speech about why the people of gothem will always find good in themselves despite hardship - hilarious

So, a more aggressive Spider-Man, say black suit Spidey, would need to reveal his mouth in order to convey anger effectively?

lol

Spidey should definitely use his body a lot more during dialogue. Since we can't see his face, we need him to do SOMETHING with this body, so he's not just standing there like an occasional bobble head. He's such a physical character, that we need to see him be more expressive with his body.

....and no, i don't want him to look like he's roger rabbit high on crack.

Exactly.

Something that I want to see is (which he does in the comics often, but I'm not sure how good it'd look onscreen) him perched on the wall, ledge, hanging upside down, etc when he's talking to someone. I don't want to see him just standing there. lol

YES. I've mentioned this several times over the years, but when an artist like John Romita Sr tells you that Spidey should never just "stand there", that he should be hanging from a web, perched on a wall, etc, you should probably listen.

Yeah, that was one thing I hated about the past trilogy. Spidey always looked so... Stiff.
