I've said running, shooting, action, jokes and a love story are not part of that film and your reaction is Because at that time [those thing] were part of Star Trek. I don't understand that...

You were asking why people didn't like TMP...i responded that the things you liked about the film maybe the things that people who watch the show saw on a regular basis and felt were missing from the movie. Not to mention Bones who was one of the leads of the show is relegated to walking on the bridge, saying something snarky and leaving....he does this about three times before they even go in the cloud. They also had a horrible costume design. If you look at the show those colors popped off the screen...why replace those vibrant colors with dull greys and whites?

I didn't get into it until after I saw ST '09, but I dove straight into the original series on Netflix after that and really enjoyed it. It's not a bad place to start, imo. It's cheesy, but I like the adventure spirit crossed with a bit of a Twilight Zone feel it had. I liked the show better than the movies with that cast, tbh.

Start with the shows...start with the Original Series then the original movies then TNG, DS9

nice to see that everyone agrees that its dumb that they destroyed the ship. i understand that they needed a big action scene in the first 15 minutes because this is how modern blockbusters are made. but there are other ways.

there will be no impact . who cares? they will repair or build a new one.

I am a Star Wwars fan and a Star Trek fan. I saw Star Wars back in '77. I enjoyed the prequels and didn't hate Jar Jar as much as everyone else did. Seeing Yoda saber fight is still a highlight in my eyes.
I am a TOS fan and it took me a while to warm up to TNG...but I did like DS9 and Enterprise...I saw Battlestar Galactica reboot before watching Voyager and it's ruined for me.
I know a lot of Trek fans don't like the reboot movies but I look at them as happening in another universe that the original series. It should be its own thing just like a movie series. Asked on the Mirror universe would be.

Actually I'm not far from this, and also saw Star Wars (1977) in the theater.

I didn't mind Jar Jar really. The prequel films were interesting to see. They had some serious flaws but it's not like they ruined the franchise for me.

I like the Star Trek reboot films a lot.

Anyway, the problem that a lot of people have with the ST reboots seems to be similar to their issues with Man of Steel. They have such a fondness for the originals (Roddenberry and Donner) that they can't let them go and be appreciated what they were for their day. This is a new time we're in. Reboots need to do something original and fresh with the characters (imho).

I still appreciate the TOS tv show and Superman: the Movie for what they were in their time. However that time has passed, and we're in a different era now, especially with respect to CGI and how to craft fantasy adventure blockbusters. I'm enjoying seeing something different done with them now. And in a generation from now (God willing) I will enjoy seeing something equally creative and fresh done with the characters.

The shows obviously. t: But it depends on what you want to explore. If you have enough time I'd watch all the seasons of The Next Generation, because it's one of the best TV series ever imo. You can find some weird or "worse" episodes in every season but overall it's fantastic. It's about philosophy and psychology and politics and religion and characters and their interactions, it's really an intellectual heavy stuff. Yes you have action and other things there but the whole series are basically about dealing with various kinds of philosophical questions. It's imo the best ST show so that's why I'd recommend it to you.

That's because 'plot' holds no meaning in a Malick film. it's all about tone and emotion. Malick's films are more akin to music than they are to a novel.

Malick has been a ponderous bore since he returned to filmmaking. The New World, To the Wonder and The Thin Wet Fart don't hold a candle to Badlands.

I love all his films (except To the Wonder, which I haven't seen). The New World is highly underrated, imo.

Man I wish so much they've used this somewhat misleading strategy to make it look so full of action just for the trailer and the final film gonna really be about something interesting and thoughtful... But they wanted the script to be "less Star Treky" so... Oh man, I'm so upset and sad.

But...I mean were the last 2 movies really that thoughtful? STID had some stuff about terrorism and ends justifying the means. But it was pretty shallow.
