Star Trek Beyond - Part 1

This felt more like a TV ad than a teaser playing in front of one of the biggest movies of the year/decade. I don't think any of the content looked bad, but it just wasn't an enticing tease.

Yeah, a bit like when they do the teaser for the trailer, that we get a lot these days.

Yeah, this was a pretty nothing trailer. And the story/concept, while I appreciate it being different than the last two, feels too small so far. I was expecting "go big" for the 50th Anniversary movie... This feels like it could have been an episode of the show.

Again-- So far.

And I still hate those new uniforms.

Personally I don't know how anyone could get any sense of the scale from this trailer.

The trailer could r.have been better. But I still have faith in this film.

Prolly slapped together to showcase in front of Star Wars.

Yeah, but considering what a huge thing Star Wars is certain to be, you'd think they'd put a little more effort into focusing on narrative/character than putting something out there that would seem at home in a commercial break during a football game.

Gotta say, I don't know why they changed the ship uniforms. It just doesn't look as good on them as the one's in the first two (which I already thought were a pretty good adaptation of the show's uniforms) They look like they tried to mix the original series uniform with a Next Generation style, and it doesn't really work for me.

Yeah, I said this before, it looked very contained, boxed in. Before anyone says it's a teaser, the effects aren't finished etc, I am talking about the composition and framing. It just looks small.

Look at the teasers for Star Wars or JJ Star Trek's in comparison and the sense of scale is there even from the very beginning.

Trailer was ok, but NOT what you play infront of Star Wars. Totally agree there. It wouldn't really draw me in as a casual viewer.

Exactly. And for a franchise about exploring and racing around in the expanse of space and various planets, and story about being stranded on a planet seems immediately seems small.

Also, as I said, this could change with the more we see... But so far, not feeling it.

I can see why Michael Kaplan created those patterns on the uniforms in the JJ Trek movi s. Without them the uniforms looks boring.

I like Kirk's jacket, though. :o

I do have to wonder if there's an actual reason that they didn't just copy and paste the uniform design from the first two films, though...

After rewatching the Into Darkness Teaser just now I think I get it now. I like the Beyond teaser but I'm already going to see it anyway so I'm a little biased. It's funny because the Beyond teaser feels more fun but the Into Darkness one had more energy and dynamic life to it. Also it seems they're trying to have the cinematography fit as much as possible, but you can still see the difference between Lin and JJ. I like the teaser but one thing I could have used more of (and this was increased after watching ITD's teaser) was Idris Elba's character.

Ha-ha, it does look like Fast and Furious in space
The running and the jumping.
.

Looks like it will be more 'fun' like that executive note that was speculated last year. That opening bit could have come out of a gotg sequel.

I do think the wild card here is this director. Grossly overlooked for pulling the F&F franchise out of the grave(only to hand it off at it's peak for someone else to get all the cred imo). He might just work that same magic here and pull this property out of it's perceived slump.

Star Trek needs to get away from the influence of JJ Abrams, get a new direction, if this can achieve that much then it's alright.

Also, Star Trek needs some commercial success, if having a tone like Fast and Furious, GOTG and Serenity helps them, then why not ?

That's what I was afraid was going to happen. The teaser didn't do anything for me.

I don't blame Paramount for this, they desperately need to sell ST to general movie going audience who like Fast and Furious movies, Transformers, Marvel movies.

They are not making these movie just for fans, this much was clear when they hired Lin as director.

It looks decent. I dont mind the action as long as it has some sort of epic story that we can get invested in. But yeah this is an attempt to sell ST to the mass audiences and not to the more intellectual crowd

I hope Uhura gets some good moments in this time around and nothing that has to do with being worried about Spock.

I liked the teaser. It does look fun.

Spock's jacket in that one shot reminds me of the Stargate Atlantis jackets:

Not a good look to be imitating. Even Stargate Atlantis ditched those ugly things. And why does spock have red on his jacket? He isnt an engineer. His jacket should have blue on it.

In general I dislike everything about the new uniforms. Well, except for Kirk's outfit. That looks pretty good, but the rest is a jump in the wrong design direction.

As for the overall trailer, not sure what to make of it. Wreaks of desperation. "Oh look at how cool Star Trek is! We've got beastie boys and bangs and whizzes and booms!" And yes I know its just the first trailer, but this just didnt sell the film or even get me teased.

And did the ship really need to be destroyed again? And once again Earth seems to be in peril. Cause we havent seen that before.:o call me crazy but I dont go to watch star trek to watch the crew marooned on a planet. Thats the sort of plot you can get away with in a star trek tv episode. Not a feature length film.
