Star Trek needs to get away from the influence of JJ Abrams, get a new direction, if this can achieve that much then it's alright.

Also, Star Trek needs some commercial success, if having a tone like Fast and Furious, GOTG and Serenity helps them, then why not ?

To be fair, it's still should have the soul of Star Trek.

Otherwise, why call it Star Trek?

It's more self aware and playful.

Seems divisive and sure some people are going to despise it but when people like they're going to love it.

I thought this was awesome.

I've never seen the original series, but from what i gather, this looks to be a throwback to that in a sense, with the lighter adventure tone, going to a rocky planet, etc. I half expected to see Kirk fighting some lizard monster, haha.

Didnt get a Guardians vibe at all, even if that was the producers' intent. I got a....ST09 vibe, given the song, but past the origin drama. Feels like a natural progression to me given the second movie ended with them embarking on the 5 year mission, entering the classic ST status quo so to speak.

I thought this trailer gave this movie a lot of character, whereas I was afraid it might have just kept on the path of Star Wars-lite. That was fine back when SW was dead in the water, but it's back now and reclaiming the 'epic space opera throne', so it makes sense for ST to zero in on what makes it special: Either 1) The intelligent hard sci-fi, or 2) The lighthearted adventure, which makes more sense for a blockbuster ST movie trailer. Telling audiences that this is from the FF director was smart too. The hard sci-fi could still be there in the story, but I wouldn't begrudge the film if it's relatively shallow, so long as it tells a good story and the characters feel like the characters.

I just think the Star Trek franchise is a great opportunity to make something really intelligent and with some cultural impact (and with great action too, why not, it's a blockbuster territory) in the mainstream area and it's a huge shame when you decide to turn the franchise into shallow fast and furious action-packed movie full of one-liners and what not. (Still hope it's not the case with ST Beyond but even the choice of music in the trailer and the lack of any interesting lines or dialogue make the opposite impression...)

It's just bad that the franchise is in the hands of people that treat it this way. They've turned it into just another action franchise, this time in space and with lasers, really sad indeed. I wish somebody like Nolan was making these films, Interstellar was much more Star Treky and infinitely more intelligent than the last two ST films...

I really cannot wait for the next trailer to see whether there is actually something interesting going on or whether the nightmare is true and it's just a dumbed down action flick.

But some ST films were too, so... you know. Now when you say Star Trek a lot of people gonna conect it with these fast and furious in space movies. Which is just wrong (and I don't use that word very often for I'm a skeptic and agnostic in matters of values.)

I was never a big fan of Star Trek, always considered myself a casual viewer. I enjoyed ST09 and I was probably one of the few that liked Into Darkness lol.

But that trailer just seemed off to me. I don't really get a Star Trek trailer from it, more of a Fast and Furious vibe which makes sense as its the same director.

I'm hoping this is just how the trailer is and the film will be quite different.

Well, I was not criticizing... but yes, this is a step in the right direction as Star Trek is about adventure, which was missing in the first two movies.

And, the trailer is slowly growing on me too, I can't stop watching it.

I agree with all of this. I really liked the first two reboot movies, and I'm not feeling this trailer. Something feels off to me. But yeah hopefully the movie will be great.

I like the trailer more now that I've watched it a few more times.

The footage itself looked good and the teaser itself wasn't badly edited. But I do think it loses some weight and power when you got Tarzan and ID4 taking itself more seriously.

Like the teaser would've been okay if, let's say, premiered with The Martian, and then the more serious trailer premiered with Star Wars.

But the one thing I disliked about the trailer was when Scotty wakes up from his pod, then jumps vertically as the pod falls off the cliff, and hangs for dear life. Unless there's a weird gravity thing going on with that planet, I don't see the point of having a scene like that. It's been done before, and it's not realistic at all.

I don't blame Paramount for this, they desperately need to sell ST to general movie going audience who like Fast and Furious movies, Transformers, Marvel movies.

They are not making these movie just for fans, this much was clear when they hired Lin as director.

After watching the teaser several times, it's grown on me. I'm hoping there'll be a bit more meat on it, story-wise.

And Kirk's hair irritates me.
