Star Trek Beyond - Part 2

Its kinda ironic that STB and GB both had two of the most panned teasers and trailers this year ,and both getting positive reviews so far.

To be fair even with good reviews I still won't see GB. But STB I was hoping would turn out to be a surprise in a very average summer, seems that's the case and as I liked the new franchise, that's good news.

My embargo is now over.

Saw the movie. I enjoyed it. It's a more entertaining and cohesive story than Star Trek Into Darkness. It sets off on its own, but the general narrative is a bit familiar to an episode of the original series, save for the fact of what happens to the Enterprise. The Enterprise crew feels more developed and textured here. Kirk has a good character arc.

It's not without its problems. The editing for the movie is TERRIBLE. And I mean terrible. So many action scenes are brought down by excessive uses of shaky cam, handheld camera work and very quick cuts. IMHO, some of the worst editing I've seen for action scenes in quite some time.

I don't get why action directors do this. I mean, can you imagine The Force Awakens looking this way?

My problem is that this is not a gritty urban thriller. It's an epic space adventure. Obscuring the action this way doesn't serve the story.

There's one big solution in the movie that's pretty goofy, but still kinda fun if that makes any sense. Some people might find it stupid. Also, it's basically ripped off from Robotech/Macross.

Hey, got question for potential trekkies here. Due to amazon prime, able to watch the old series - anyone have any episodes they can recommend?

Its on Netflix too, along with TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. They use to have all the movies, but they only have 8, which is one of the great ones, BTW.

To answer your question, there are a number of Top 10, Top whatever, lists out there when it comes to must-see episodes of TOS that people have to watch. Google it and you'll know.

But if you want an answer here: Balance of Terror, City on the Edge of Forever, Space Seed, The Trouble With Tribbles, and The Doomsday Machine are my top 5.

Just finished binge watching the entire original and animated series on Netflix. Pity Netflix didn't choose to include The Cage but whatever.

My Top Five Original Series Episodes (in no particular order)
Mirror, Mirror
Balance of Terror
Space Seed
The Enterprise Incident
The Devil in the Dark
(Honourable Mention) A Taste of Armageddon

My Bottom Five Original Series Episodes (in no particular order)
The Way to Eden
Spock's Brain
Plato's Stepchildren
The Empath
I, Mudd
(Dishonourable Mention) Turnabout Intruder

My Top Five Animated Series Episodes (in no particular order)
Yesteryear
The Time Trap
Albatross
The Survivor
One of Our Planets Is Missing
(Honourable Mention) The Terratin Incident

No bottom five because the animated series never sunk as low as the original sometimes did, IMO.

It's currently sitting on 87% and a 7.1/10 average on RT. Say what you will about ST In2D, but this reboot has been nothing but well received by critics since it started.

Didn't like the second film of the new generation of films however I loved the first film of these new films. Not a big fan of Star Trek but with these good reviews it looks like this will at least be the second best of the new films :yay:.

if it feels similar in spirit to original series save for enterprise being destroyed that will be good news to fans of classic or prime trek.

Yeah the general storyline is like a big budget extended episode of TOS, with a lot of similar beats and moments you would find in those episodes.

I like this clip.it has spirit of classic trek there.

to be fair enteprise got destroyed in trek III and enterprise d crashed in generations so them destroying enterprise isn't a radical idea even though i would have prefered film where some characters were on planet and some were on enterprise.

See this is pretty much what I've been wanting to see in a recent Star Trek movie. Not ripping them off I hope, but within the spirit of it.

Yeah believe it or not, course correction is the term I used in my extended review. This is like a nice course correction after Into Darkness.

Save for Justin Lin's unrestrained, bad action direction. Even Bryan Singer would've been preferable for these scenes.

I will have to see this now.may turn out to be my favorate of "Kelvenverse"

Justin Lin may do for star trek what sam Mendes did to james bond start o bring it back for longtime fans a bit of why they loved it.Also sounds Lin wasn't bsing us when he said he loved original show.

But then Sam dropped the ball, as it were, with Spectre.

I do think the critisms for 'Into Darkness' is valid but I do think people give 'Kelvin' timeline a hard time. I like this new take. Just one stumble doesn't mean 'Strike One, you're out'.

I disagree on spectre.as longtime fan of bond films Spectre felt most classic bond films to me.

many longtime trekkers liked with some reservations trek 2009 Into darkness went crazy on elements some fans had reservations, went too much ripping of wrath of khan, and went with orci 911 conspiracy theorys allegory.plus i got a sense orci and kurtman were kind o finfluenced by the dark knight with Khan.I always maintain it wasn't because they used khan that was the problem it was how they did it.

Hopefully in next film they do something with klingons.while i think it's god they went with new race and villains for beyond we need to use Klingons in major way again in kelvin universe

Oh hell yeah! As a guy who fell for this series because as an orphan, estranged from biological father, instantly related to Kirk's journey I am more than excited to see where this leads. Should be VERY intriguing.

Fresh rating right now! :ilv: YAY! Can't wait to see this next weekend! :p

Below are my written and video reviews:

I had a great time but the villain falls flat and I'm getting slightly sick of having to state that for the summer blockbuster. It is the closes the Kelvin era has gotten to capturing the greatness of the series but loses sight of its own philosophical questions by the middle of the flick.

EDIT: I must add that after losing my father a few weeks ago suddenly the ideas that Kirk and Spock struggle with in this really hit home.
