Star Trek Beyond - Part 4

^ Obviously Trek being R-Rated is faaaar from my first choice. But if we have to get it, I'm excited it's by a bonafide iconic filmmaker.

Green lit? To bad Tarantino's Trek doesn't have it's own thread. ;)

So how about that Star Trek beyond? remember Jaylah?

Not keen at all on the R-rated material for Star Trek. I didn't even like it when Star Trek Discovery decided to drop the F bomb into an episode.

I'm not looking forward to hearing Kirk, McCoy or Spock swearing just for the sake of it. And why the need for a blood bath?

I'm intrigued solely because it's Tarantino and not, sorry to say, someone like Zack Snyder behind it.

I'm worried Tarantino will just pull a Snyder and create a really off putting product that doesn't really fit its material.

Tarantino loves Star Trek. Yes...his version will be bringing something new to the franchise...but this franchise NEEDS something new. And no...just going back and redoing young Kirk and Spock wasn't new...it was desperate and unimaginative. But since that is what we have (instead of another new generation) then the best we can hope for is a new take on their situations.

I mean, while it's likely they're coming back-- and I hope they are, because they're all well cast and loveable-- it's not necessarily guaranteed that this follows the Kelvin-Enterprise crew.

So, R-rated Star Trek. Wasn't a fan of how Discovery executed the more "mature" content, but I have faith in Tarantino to pull it off. Hopefully he'll actually direct it and not pass it off to someone else.

This is the first time I've been excited for a Trek film in ages. And just when I'd given up hope on the franchise after Beyond & Discovery.

EDIT: You beat me to it as I was typing, Dyson.

This is great and may rejuvenate the film franchise and make it actually popular again. And I doubt it will be hard R. Probably just the occasional F word and some slightly more intense action scenes.

The movie is going to kick off with Kirk and Spock Eiffel Towering Uhura.

It’s...happening? Holy *****. I’ve never been a huge Tarantino fan, and I *have* been a huge Trek fan...and wow I hope this makes it to the screen. It might be a total train wreck, but it’s not like the franchise has done much interesting since, oh, Undiscovered Country?

Nuts, but it’s a good nuts.

Yeah, I imagine it's more or less that Tarantino doesn't want to feel like he's being restricted at all while filming.

R-rated Trek? Seriously?

Tarantino can't put his ego aside just for one effing movie.

Count me out.

Well there's bound to be a Mexican standoff and lots of blood as well as the N word.

R-Rated Trek feels as wrong as R-Rated Superman.

It's probably not about ego. A pg13 rating restricts everything. I heard one director talk about how much studio interference changes depending on the rating. The director said that with a pg13 movie studio execs want the director to include some thing for a wide range of age groups. They want to make sure intensity isn't maintained too long and they worry about young kids getting bored during parts of the film and suggest the director include something to make sure this doesnt happen. But with an R rating apparently studio execs don't make these sorts of suggestions and give the director a lot more room to breathe. That sense of freedom is important to some directors.

Despite what people think, the R rating isn't just about violence, gore, and language. Ive even read that the audio mixes of pg-13 films can cause problems with the MPAA if the action mix is too intense or realistic sounding. By deciding on an R rating from the start a lot of complications and problems are avoided from the start.

So relax and dont jump to the conclusion that this will be some foul mouthed gorefest. It probably won't be.

I mean, if it's like Matrix level R rated, that I would be fine with.

Well I hated The Revenant so I'm not exactly hyped for the potential writer here. If QT were writing it himself I'd be more intrigued.

Rated R is fine as long as they keep the cast they have, that's all I ask. :)

Did you watch The Reverent at home or at the theater? I watched it at home and enjoyed it, but it's a film that I wouldn't have enjoyed at the theater. The being said, I doubt Star Trek will be anything like the Revenant. The Revenant is very much an Iñnárritu product.

Sorry to sound cruel, but I hope this movie flops, crashes, and kills Star Trek until Paramount sells the rights to a better studio or majorly rethinks their strategy. Not because I hate Star Trek, but because I love Star Trek and I want to see it done justice by someone who actually understands the franchise and has vision beyond "let's fill it with explosions". To be fair it sounds like Tarantino has vision beyond that, but he obviously doesn't understand the brand or he wouldn't make it R-rated. Star Trek is family entertainment about people with laser guns and space aliens with pointed ears. Not to mention Star Trek should have an optimistic outlook on the future and not be directed by a man who's known for making violent, pessimistic films. I'm not saying you can't explore the franchise differently or go into deeper themes, but this is just absurd. What's next, R-rated Hobbit? R-rated Superman? Oh wait... Seriously, sometimes I feel like the studio executives make these decisions drunk. Again, sorry to sound extreme, rant over.

I saw it in the theater. But the script was one of my main problems. I've actually liked Iñnárritu's other films for the most part. This script just featured too much stupidity for plot's sake that drove me mad.

And perhaps that's not a bad idea. For the past 25 years Star Trek has limited itself to TV series and film that are set around TNG or TOS. Even Enterprise was compromised to fit into a specific direction due to it being a prequel. Perhaps Tarantino could bring in a film that actually moves the series forward. Bring in a new crew, a new Enterprise and give the property a genuinely fresh make over, and I'm not talking some Discovery type BS that craps on Roddenberry's vision, something that holds true to the values of TOS but moves everything forward by several decades. If anyone can convince Paramount to actually advance the franchise forward into a new timeline it's going to be Tarantino.

I'm wary of the R rated idea. If it is soft R, it might be OK. But if he goes for hard R with lots of cursing, extreme gore, and "the Gimp" raping crewmen in the basement....then it will be a big mistake.

Yup. I'd miss the heck out of that cast, but if we get great new ones... Who would say no?

Unrelated-- I think the fact they've hired someone else to write it all but guarantees Tarantino doesn't intend to direct, unfortunately.

Even him just being on board to write and produce would be good.

It will. I suspect he'll have a similar relationship to it that Cameron seems to have with the next Terminator.
