The Force Awakens Star Wars VII Director? - Part 1

One of my problems with T:L was that it felt like the world of The Grid took too much of a back seat. Which is strange, because Flynn was obsessed with the "possibilities" of it all. They should've went full Asimov and started delving into the key differences between human and program (The Matrix trilogy started doing something like that at times, but veered off into random unrelated philosophy).

To throw another name into the pot, Justin Lin.

He's been a popular name lately. Isn't he attached to Terminator 5 and more Fast and Furious movies, though?

I hope we find out who the director is this week. I think it's going to be Matthew Vaughn. If not him, maybe Favreau.

Star Wars Episode 7 director to be announced next month, hints Kennedy
OLIVIA MARNE said:
The director of “Star Wars Episode 7″ will be announced next month, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy tells ABC Radio.

“I have no immediate update, but hopefully in January I’ll have something that I can say”, Kennedy, who is in charge of putting together the next three installments of the “Star Wars” series (as well as whatever “Star Wars” spin-off films they have planned), tells the station.

J.J. Abrams turned down the initial offer:

While we may get some new updates on Star Wars: Episode VII in early 2013, it won't be that Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams will be at the helm.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Abrams said he will be sticking to the "Star Trek" franchise. "I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I'm not thinking that far ahead! I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing. Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands."

He added that "there were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

I think it just came down to him not wanting to do both Star Trek and Star Wars, whether it's doing both or leaving Star Trek. It's acceptable.

I'm a little surprised they asked him, to be honest.

How odd would it be if he was doing both.

I think it would've been a conflict of interest. JJ has a great relationship with Paramount, and he or Paramount wouldn't want things to get nasty.

Wouldn't be all that weird. Like when Bryan Singer dropped Xmen to work on Superman because that's the one he was a fan of. Off course, that went bad for most people involved...

I'd rather it not be the same guy doing both Trek and Wars.

The only one it didn't go bad for was Hugh Jackman. :funny:

I can understand Abrams' position fine. I can't blame the guy anyway. He's not as emotionally attached in terms of fandom to ST s he is to SW.

Just goes to show whoever is gonna direct this is gonna have a huge weight on their shoulders. If they're a fan or not. I can't imagine what they would be thinking. But it's best to remove all of that and just focus on making a great SW film.

Fanboys will scrutinize every waking moment, so if they can ignore or deal with that, they should be good. Lucas knows what people say about him and frankly I don't blame him for just tossing his hands up and saying **** it, you deal with it from now on.

Haha, he made sure to put himself out of the running as soon as possible.

Y'know, if they're asking every director possible and it turns out that Robert Rodriguez has agreed to direct the new movie... that would be awesome.

Hopefully we'll be getting the news any day now. Strange that Vaughn has been pretty quiet on this front.

My favorite choices (in no particular order):

  • Duncan Jones
  • Rupert Wyatt
  • Rian Johnson
  • Andrew Stanton
  • Matthew Vaughn
  • Kenneth Branagh
  • Alfonso Cuarón
  • Guillermo del Toro
  • Neil Blomkamp
  • Brad Bird (although he said he ain't going to do it)

He'll start talking once he's been announced, then leaves promptly before production is about to start.

He does have a knack for that.
