I DO think Logan is a masterpiece and is better than The Dark Knight but quite a margin.
It does justice to its main character. Logan's characterisation and arc is brilliant. It was so believable even with this unbelievable character. You can truly feel the pain and desperation. My missus was in tears at the end. I was very close lol. Only a handful of films ever have made me tear up. Dafne Keen's performance is unbelievable and X23 is handled so well. Never liked the comic book version. Then Patrick Stewart with one of the best performances of his storied career. Even Stephen Merchant's Caliban is perfectly droll and gets some emotional meat. Boyd Holbrook injects a lot of interesting touches into an under written role.
The pacing is spot on. It never drags but you still have time to absorb the scenes and build tension. The plot itself is executed well. And the thing I love is the subtle world building. It's like Children of Men. A lived in, dirty future with small differences that don't scream for attention. Like the auto-freighters that cause the crash.
It SHOWS us a lot things... it doesn't spoon feed us with almost monologue esque conversations like TDK does. The characters feel real. The way they act and speak is like how real people act and speak. It's all so believable.
Then the action. It all has weight and is shot/edited so well. Mangold weaves the set pieces into the story so naturally. You never get the sense that this film was made with a quota for action scenes, like most others. And the brutality! I knew it was violent but this was gruesome. But I feel it had to be. This film would simply not be as powerful if it was neutered in any way. It'does be like Platoon or Saving Private Ryan with PG13 ratings.
The only thing TDK has over Logan is The Joker. Characterisation, acting, story, action, dialogue, editing, cinematography... for me Logan is better at everything. I guess that's unpopular lol
