Sci-Fi Stranger Things (Netflix) - Part 1

I just marathoned this show over the Christmas period (thanks for the Netflix voucher, sis! :woot:) and really enjoyed it, the first season more than the second, but the second is still really good. I just hope it doesn't do what Twin Peaks ended up doing in it's original run by trying to go too big and end up essentially losing what made the show so charming and entertaining in the first place. The best thing about this show by far is the extremely likeable characters and their interactions with each other. So I can understand the Duffer brothers wanting to expand the show's universe a little, but I hope they keep that in mind and try to keep the action centered on Hawkins and the original core characters as much as they can.

A couple of musings about the second season: Firstly, poor Bob. :csad: I really liked him, you can't just kill Samwise Gamgee, you bastards! :oldrazz: Secondly, the father/daughter dynamic between Eleven and Hopper (my favourite characters) makes my heart hurt, it's so pure. Their conversation in the car in the last episode made my cry, as did 'You did good, kid.' Such great acting and chemistry from DH and MBB.

The Duffer brothers confirmed season 3 would be more intimate and personal, so I wouldn't worry about things going big again until the Mind Flayer makes a comeback.

That's good to hear, I imagine the third season will expand on the experiments and the history of the facility more. I remember watching a low budget horror movie about the MKUltra experiments once called The Banshee Chapter. Not a great movie, but it provoked enough of an interest in me to read up about MKUltra. Fascinating and scary stuff.

Hmmm.... That must mean we get the return of Mind Flayer in S4. Pretty excited for Season 3, even though we may have to wait for a year!

Feels like the natural way to do that would be to have more of Eleven's "siblings show up, and have Eleven torn between her two different "outsider" families.

I'm sure we'll see at least a few more of the test subjects out of 1-7, 9 and 10. Plus Eight will probably return. I'm wondering what other powers we'll see from them. Will they go full X-Men and have powers like healing and teleportation?

Are you sure about that? Episode 7 is not very popular, to put it mildly. Do you really think the showrunners will continue on that path?

They have to wrap it up someone, even if that means someone is killing all the numbers and 8 dies in the first 5 minutes of S3e1.

That's too big of a hole to not solve.

They're not gonna abandon a potentially interesting plotline just because a lot of Internet nerds whined about it.

The Russo have already stated they don't regret making episode 7 despite the critical response.

Geez. The episode wasn't THAT bad.

When can we expect season 3?

Best case scenario: end of summer and beginning of Fall.

Worst case scenario: November/early December.

I agree. I liked it and i was really surprised by the backlash. But tbh the showrunners can do whatever they want at this point, Stranger Things would still be one of the biggest shows around.

Those are just my predictions though, so they could easily be wrong as well. ^^'

We'll see in the upcoming months.

That doesn't mean there's no consequence to how well received things are. A LOT of shows have great first seasons. It's more difficult keeping that quality up as the novelty of the initial idea and new setting wears off but the best shows match, improve on or at least stay in the ballpark of a great first season. I think the storyline had a lot of potential and was the right thing to try in the 2nd season to expand on what had come before, but I don't think it was done very well. I'd give season 1 a 9 and season 2 a 7.

I'm taking it as the official word. ;)

Hopefully earlier than later. I love this show. Fin is right though.....you can't go around offing Sam.

I seriously doubt it will be back before or at the point S2 came out in October. The first season was out in July or August of 2016, two or three months removed from the late October season two premiere. So going by that, if production is on the same time-table, the earliest we'd see season three would be mid to late December. But I think it's likely it won't be this year at all. Could very well be 2019 before it comes back.

At the very least, it'll probably be back before the final season of Game of Thrones. :o

Or maybe people just didn't like it at all.

When can we expect season 3?

I'd bet money it's not coming out until 2019. Early 2019 like February.
I seriously doubt it's coming back this year

I think most of the powers should be restrained to mental powers, just to keep the theme of 8 and 11 strong.

I feel like pure telepathy should be an option, and given the nature of the show, I could easily see them making it a lot more wild and uncontrollable. There was a telepathic character in Batman once, Echo, who was plagued by the fact she couldn't turn off her telepathy; she was constantly picking up everyone's thoughts at the same time. Imagine one of Eleven's compatriots seeming to suffer from schizophrenia, except the voices are real, and maybe occasionally someone else's thoughts overwhelm them and they end up being "possessed" by that person, and occasionally the reverse happens.

Or maybe there's a character who can locate and track anyone in the world. We already know that Eleven can listen and observe anyone anywhere, so imagine someone who's got that power just always on, and they can sense and hunt down whoever their target. And maybe one of "Poppa's" bosses tries to make sure that Eleven really is gone by siccing the tracker on her.

There's always pyrokinesis; it would even work as a nice little shout out to Stephen King and Firestarter. Though maybe they could again use some vaguely real world science to spice it up; instead of just summoning and controlling fire, maybe they control temperature and energy overall. Maybe they've got a literally deadly cold touch, and when the characters' can suddenly see their breath after a drop in temperature, they know a fireball is incoming.

You condo always just have a psycho-prototype of Eleven out there, someone with the same power set but a much worse and uncontrollable psyche.

...

Looking at some of the above options, it occurs to me that of we did get a more intimate, less Upside-Down-y storyline featuring Eleven's siblings, we could see some major property damage done to real world set pieces in or out of Hawkins.
