Sci-Fi Stranger Things (Netflix) - Part 1

Just finished season 3. Absolutely masterful. Can’t wait for more. What an amazing series it is.

I really love that coming out scene. I was worried they would make it too modern (it is set in the mid eighties after all, right at the moment homophobia was at its most powerful) but it was just superb. It made me so happy and I hope other people who might be closeted and having trouble really loved it too

I thought the coming out scene was great on both ends. The characters and the actors handled it very well. Kudos to the Duffers. And it was a great showcase to show how Steve had grown since we first saw him in season one.

That said, I would challenge you on stating that 1985 was a moment that homophobia was at it's most powerful. Yes, absolutely, there were strong currents of homophobia in the culture at the time, one can look at the reaction to the AIDS crisis at the time from many different corners, even those with high level official authority, such as in the Reagan White House. And I'm not making claim things weren't far worse then than now... But I'm also saying that if anything the beggining of the turning point was in fact the mid 80's. It was a period where there was more activism on the part of homosexuals and their friends and families to end the mainstream culture's stigma. More people started coming out and more people began to see the humanity of their fellow citizens regardless of their orientation. While the response to the AIDS crisis had a lot of villains there were heroes too. And let's be clear... As bad as it might have been it was far, far, FAR removed from the period of the 1950's or 1960's. Could you imagine what the cultural response to AIDS would have been during those years? That's not absolving the culture at large or everyone at the time for what they did. And for sure, if you weren't (and yeah, even if you WERE) gay in anyplace in America that wasn't a cosmopolitan center like the big cities (New York, L.A., Philidelphia etc.) a small town could be brutal still in the 80's, I still would say that it was a far cry from how things were in the States, pre-1970's.

Interesting idea, I mean it’s not impossible maybe steve even had family members who were lost to AIDS and you’re right, lots of people went to the dark side and used it as an opportunity to gain political power or just settle old scores but others started having an honest discussion about what they were afraid of in the first place and some people were like “oh wait, I have nothing to be scared of”.

In terms of being the darkest time, true the 1950s were horrible but a lot of it was just shoved into quiet spaces and never talked about. The 1980s is when it became open warfare against gays and non gender conforming people. Still there were heroes too

I thought Season 3 was terrible. Season 1 was good. Season 2 was brilliant.

This show is quite overrated, but it's still enjoyable.

[SPOILERS] The American in the Russian jail is definitely Hopper. There is no way Eleven's sister could know that Dr. Brenner could be in a Russian prison. [/SPOILERS]

I thought it wasn't so bad. I wonder where they get their ideas for every season.

But I'm gonna say it's my favorite season.

They present the idea of growing up and losing your childhood innocence very well. If you think about it, Eleven has been fighting back sex monsters that she created (she's the only girl in a group of kids originally and there have been a flower-shaped demigorgorn and the season 3 monster that chose a very sexual character for its host). Twist is that this time around, the sex monsters infected her and she lost her magic (her childhood innocence). She also lost her only father figure basically because that's the course of life, right? You lose your childhood innocence, become capable of reproduction and when you leave kids behind you have fulfilled your duty and can now die. I guess the irony here is that the theme of Stranger things is not a strange one at all.

Will is going through a similar transition into adulthood, so I am really curious to see what's in store for season 4. I think the only way for the magic to come back would be by being around those who are still innocent (ie an even younger character)

Also hope these kids have enough to time to enjoy life! I've heard a lot of them stress out about balancing out school and acting.

Started watching this show for the first time ever around 10 days ago, I am now on Episode 3 of the third season and have had a 6 day holiday in between! Safe to say I am loving this and being an 80’s kid makes me love it even more.

I still need to start Season 3 of this- having just finished Season 3 of Daredevil a few days ago.

Cool. Be nice to finally spend a good amount of time in the Upside Down. Unless they're trying to deceive us and we end up being in Russia the whole time :funny:

They need to address some kind of time jump, because those kids are no longer kids.

I feel like a good portion of the season will take place in Russia. They'll also have to clear up the whole
is Hopper alive or dead thing with that American line.

Nice. The emphasis on the clock is reinforcing my harebrained time travel theory. The "We're not in Hawkins anymore" could have several meanings, referring to the Byers family moving away, Russia, and the Upside Down itself. More of the story could take place inside the UD.

Yeah, I won't be surprised.

Just a random theory, but assuming Hopper is alive and is the American, I could see some of the season focusing on the kids traveling between the US and Russia through the Upside Down to save Hopper.

Awesome to have the official announcement and that little video tease is great. Lots of potential of being away from Hawkins

Cool! It’s a fun idea to get out of Hawkins too
