Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - - - - - - - - - - Part 27

Talked to somebody who saw the movie early again.

Thinks critics/fan reaction are from people who were shocked that Suicide Squad turned out to be a very David Ayer type movie. The marketing sold it to be something else. However, outside of a few funny moments its just about people who react to crap situations and then there's a big action finale.

I always worried about him writing the script for Suicide Squad cause I wondered if that style could work in a comic book movie. Seems critics just find it off putting especially in that setting. Ayer knows cop dramas and war movies.

I know he had a lot of success with Fury, but he really should have collaborated with Geoff Johns on the script. I know Johns was a resource, but I mean maybe let him find a way to tell a better story.

Interesting to hear about how messy the movie supposedly is, but it isn't surprising. The complete tonal shift between the original comic con trailer and the marketing pre-release was pretty jarring.

Tonally clashing trailers/marketing are indeed a significant red flag. Not as blatant as a late review embargo, but a worrisome sign nevertheless.

The only films I feel will be a true measure of whether DCEU can strike a chord with the critics will be Jenning's WW, The Batfleck film and Wan's Aquaman.

Ayer's a great director, but his track record hasn't exactly been rock steady.

Ayer said that he made a lot of cuts, and as a result there was a gap he needed to fill in with the reshoots, which resulted in more action- going off that, and by the reviews stating that the third act seems to be paced differently, I'm assuming that they changed the climax in some regard- And it appears that
the joker was involved in some aspect of the climax(charred face with grenade "ba-bye" scene) but that is no longer there

Fury and End of Watch both had absurd amounts of deleted scenes, so I imagine we will at the very least get those and the original ending on blu-ray as extras

Grace Randolph just put up her reaction tweet. I can't link it here because it has an expletive but safe to say she didn't quite care for it.

Anybody think one of the problems is the "gods among us" depictions of dc characters historically hurts their adaptability to live action media?

Don't worry SJW will make sure people give it a good rating, even if the reviewer might not like it.

Huh, I'm used to poor advance excuses why a DCEU movie will get bad reviews, but poor advance excuses why a DCEU movie will get good reviews is new. :o

Wait who is this Randolph and why should we care? (Honest question)

She does YouTube critic/movie news stuff

Used to really hate DC now loves it, and even believes in "DC hate". Now she hates SS, I'd pay her no mind

So here is the dilemma. I was extremely hyped for BVS, did not listen to the critics and saw it opening night. I was disappointed on all levels. Heck I even regretted spending money on the tickets because I was part of the opening weekend record which led to the argument that the movie was a success because of the money it made that weekend which was basically half the total domestic gross. I was excited for SS and still am I suppose but I can't just ignore the critics this time. I was burned too many times for that. So this looks like a second or third week viewing. But if I feel burned again, then WW will probably be the last DCEU film I see. DC/WB what have you done?

Are you kidding? No.

Suicide Squad's most anticipated characters were Deadshot, Harley and Joker.

The problems with the DCEU have nothing to do with that.
