Titanic was the number one movie for 15 weeks...which is still the record

Lets also not forget that a blizzard had hit the east coast the opening weekend of Avatar and is said to have effected its take

None of it's weekends cracking 40mill and most of which were less than 20mill.
how many movies this very summer would have broken that streak. Last summer even and last summer sucked.

I just think timing goes along way, and you can bet your ass the next Cameron films will be winter releases too, Modern Cameron wouldn't dare release during the summer, Though I think he could open big. I think studio's are catching on given the look of next christmas.

UPDATE: Potter Sets Opening Day Record with $92.1 Million!

According to ERC Box Office, it has grossed $92.1 million in its opening Friday including those $43.5 million from midnight shows and its well on its way towards an opening weekend that should easily surpass the current record held by Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan's anticipated Batman sequel opened on the same weekend three years ago to the tune of $158.4 million in three days, a record that's held steady even with the last two "Twilight" movies having bigger opening days.

Ridiculous opening day for DH2.

But TDK's Saturday and Sunday records are safe. DH2 made the same $ as TDK did on opening day when we take midnights for both movies out of the equation. But since more people went to see DH2 already, it will drop much harder and miss out on TDK's Saturday record of 47m and miss out quite comfortably on TDK's Sunday record of 43m.

Early weekend estimates for Harry Potter: $172 million

insanity.

It's always interesting when a movie makes in what day what others can only hope to crawl too. Or when they pretty much equal Green Lantern's production budget in a few days.

Even more curious how Captain America will do next week.

Crazy numbers all around. I had a feeling that it would break the Opening Day record(not by as much as it did though), but I was not expecting the Opening Weekend record to fall too. Very impressive.

its gonna depend on what it does on sunday and through out the week....if its still posting serious numbers then Cap has something to worry about

I think Cap may cater to not only mainstream but the older audience that knows of the character. Not too many older people are Potterphiles. Some are, but a lot just know of it in passing.

This movie is going to make more than 47 million today, Saturday. Don't know about Sunday until I see today's numbers.

I don't think anyone at Paramount is realistically expecting Cap to do record breaking numbers....it'll make a nice amount of $$$

The church has always been against this series lol.

I think this is a good example all things falling in the right direction for WB.
It's very possible that a well reviewed, 3D batman finale release would have similar 3day numbers.

I'm very curious if WB execs have the balls to tell nolan his batman movie will be converted. What's he gonna do, leave?:woot:

At the moment boxoffice.com is predicting a $57 million opening weekend for Captain America and $160 million in total for the domestic market

will it make thor numbers given the circumstances?
will it knock harry potter from the number one spot in it's second weeken?
will it ever ever see the number one spot?

I don't think anyone can really answer these questions

I dont see him changing. Considering he seems against it. Its not like Cameron and Spielberg are gonna convince him like they did Bay.

its all up to if the Potter-philes pull what every woman in america did for Titanic. I had a female co worker who saw the movie every two days with friends...and her mob grew and grew

lol true, there was a bit of a mob mentality.

The thing is studios make the 3d conversion call, rarely directors.
Look at Campbell and even Stanton. Bay had to be convinced to shot 3D and probably could have fought conversion, but this is WB and nolan is done with the series after this. I'm just saying after what's going down with potter it's very possible WB will make the (very) logical business decision.

true but some film makers have the clout to do what they want...and while Nolan isnt doing Batman anymore they still arent gonna let him go somewhere else to make movies

Well as long as it beats TDK's weekend record I'm happy:yay:

Why would anybody think TDKs Saturday is safe?

Probably because potter is diffusing it's demand by blowing through it's ridiculously high numbers. Seems kinda backwards but it's possible.

If potter had a high Thursday opening this would be more obvious.

I think TDK's Saturday is going down, kids franchises and saturday's go hand in hand.
though 8 year old probably haven't a clue what's going on anymore lol.

I doubt WB will convert TDKR into 3D. They flirted with converting Inception into 3D, but Nolan shot that down. I would almost bet money that when Nolan signed on to direct TDKR he had a clause keeping WB from converting it into 3D.

And while DH2 had a good 3D percent share internationally, I've noticed that far more people are seeing DH2 in 2D here in the U.S..

What's it to you?

****s and giggles. No...really. It'll be funny to see TDK fanboys constantly moaning:o

I almost wanted to see Twilight break the opening record but it's so bad that I couldn't bring myself to do so. As bad as rabid TDK fanboys are, the Twilighters are worse.
