Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

Not entirely sure a movie is needed atm TBH

Not as long as she's part of the Arrowverse. If I remember correctly, wasn't the Superman embargo the reason we got a Supergirl series in the first place (and why we've only seen the Man of Steel in three episodes to date)?

They don't even have a producer yet. I'd say it's 3 years off at minimum. Melissa will probably be done with the role by the time a film comes out.

Even though it's far off, I don't see why it wouldn't be needed at the moment unless this is just folks clinging to Benoist like she must be the only one to wear the cape the same way fans clamor over Gustin and Miller both being different Flashes when there's no reason fans can't have both or have their pick.

I'd be all for a Supergirl movie any time, for the record. She's a great character who deserves the big budget treatment. But only if they include Superman in her origin. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

Sooner or later some of this sh** will stick to the wall.

This could be a backdoor way of WB returning to Superman using this Supergirl movie as a launching pad.
Superman could guest star here, before spinning off into his own film.

I still love the Helen Slater movie. And although I was never able to get into the Supergirl CW show I do like what I've seen of Melissa Benoist (the odd episode here and there, the Invasion! crossover) and I think she does a very good job. I love the character anyway. I'm pretty excited about this news (I know it's early days) and I'll be very interested to see who's cast in the lead role.

Cameron Cuffe plays Seg-El on Krypton:

And it sure would be nice if your show would acknowledge that fact, Cam. :o

More female superhero films is a PLUS

though not sure if we need this.

Just the fact that he has a granddaughter at all would be nice. The whole plot of that show revolves around a character from the future making sure his grandson exists to become a hero, with zero mention of any granddaughter whatsoever, never mind one who also becomes a great hero. It's not like Supergirl's been part of the Superman mythos for over half a century...oh wait.

For the record though, Cuffe himself has always acknowledged Supergirl and been complimentary towards the show and Melissa. I think at one point he even said his character has more in common with Kara than with Kal-El. It's just the Krypton writers that have blinders on to her.

I would like at least an acknowledgement of Zor-el.

I would certainly like more acknowledgement of Zor-El on THIS show.

I think a film can learn from the show what to do and what not to do.

I personally think they have to avoid these problems with the TV show:

1) Don't just make her female Superman - I think on the TV show she just acts too much like Superman, her alter ego is a reporter (was much more interesting when she was a PA), when she talks she does all the arm golfing, hand on hips stuff. Let her be who she is.
2) Use actual Supergirl villains/storylines - yeah we saw Reign as the big bad in S3 of Supergirl but other than that we've had her battling Parasite, Bizarro, Mr Mxyzptlk, etc. On top of that we've had storylines adapted such as For the Man Who Has Everything, etc. Just give her her own rogues gallery and her own damn stories, no need to pilfer Superman's. Make her an interesting character in her own right. I do concede I get doing it on TV as you have a 20+ episide quota to fill in every season but no need to do it in the feature film.
3) Avoid the political commentary - it's one of the biggest annoying parts of the TV show. As Tom Mankiewicz always said don't use these characters solve real world problems cause the problems are still there when the credits roll.
4) Girl power - there has been way too much emphasis on the show about her been a girl on the show for my liking and he in the end girls are stronger. It's the wrong message, look at how Wonder Woman did it there weren't lines of dialogue about how she's just a woman etc. So leave it off the table.

Also looking at the 1984 movie, use Superman in this. I get that Christopher Reeve backed out before they filmed his parts but don't make that mistake again. Superman should be the one to discover her for sure or maybe even have a role similar to the one he had in the New 52 which would work in this film as a sort of glorified cameo.

Lastly, If Cavill is out as Superman then use the film to introduce the new actor. They did that succesfully on the TV show where Tyler Hoechlin felt very familiar as the Man of Steel even though we hadn't seen him before so it can be done again.

Brainiac is a Superman villain I wouldn't mind seeing "pilfered" for a Supergirl film considering he's more of a boogeyman for Kara than he ever was for Clark due to his previous attack on Krypton.

Because honestly, her "rogues gallery" gets ignored because it sucks. She and Superman share a universe, and therefore, villains. His universe shouldn't suddenly be off-limits to her, as she's always played in the same sandbox. It's not the same as Arrow stealing Batman's villains/storylines, for example. Superman's villains ARE her most-memorable villains, generally speaking. She knew General Zod. She was traumatized by Brainiac's abduction of Kandor, and later fought him on multiple occasions. She was kidnapped and brainwashed by Darkseid. She was killed defending Superman from the Anti-Monitor. She's fought Doomsday. Metallo. Lobo. Cyborg Superman. And so on.

Likely going with a younger actress since Melissa will turn 30 this year. Why not cast the actress who played young Kara last season if this is different from the TV show?

I could see them use the comics storyline Being Super as a good story to do the Supergirl movie.

I’m happy to watch a Supergirl film if and when it is made and released, which probably won’t be for many years.

I’m pretty much happy to see any female superhero film, but it would have been nice to see another character get more exposure through a film, for example, Zatanna, Vixen or even Hawkgirl (although the fact the latter two have appeared on DCTV shows may not work in their favour, even though it’s obviously not ruling out Supergirl).

I hope that they’re still progressing Batgirl. And that they do right by Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya (The Question (?)) in Birds of Prey if that is the actual lineup. And I want Big Barda to play a BIG (pun intended) role in the New Gods film.

It’s fun to speculate but I’m as sure as I can be on one thing, it won’t be Melissa and I’m ok with that go teenager. Melissa doesn’t have the time to film a “blockbuster” movie while the show is in production. I’m also not getting my hopes up. Batgirl is isn’t happening since Joss Wheaton dropped out, Flash, Batman, and Cyborg solo movies aren’t moving forward. Man of Steel 2 isn’t happening either. Honestly the only DCEU movies actually happening are Aquaman and Wonder Woman 1984.

I think Melissa Benoist does a very good job in the role, but I agree there's no way she'll be the big screen Supergirl (not that I think she couldn't do it).

She's the only one I want to see in the movie.

I might pay a matinee ticket to see it if Skyler Samuels took on the part.
