I've been under the impression that the color filter of choice for this movie was some sort of grey, which makes everything look bleak and overcast, sort of.
Whilst I agree Sharky, I'd say there was an extra bit of context with Joker's line because he was literally referring to the fact that they were opposing forces that both had reason for not eliminating one another.
In that case it easily works very well with Bane and Batman, especially towards the climax. Two opposing forces throughout Gotham, the dissenting terrorizing "firestarters" and the scattered but righteous do-gooders all of them led and focused on two points that being Bats and Bane, that final battle will have a LOT of pathos behind it.
Quick question, perhaps a dumb one. Were the t-shirts from the Design Contest (where Nolan picked the winners) named prior to being chosen? I only ask because the name of the winner (Hello Mr. Wayne) may have been chosen by Warner Brothers which could be one of Bane's lines in the movie, perhaps one he says prior to demolishing the Batman.
And also including the 15 minute short film of Michael Caine carving a tangerine that plays before the actual film kicks off. They compressed the story down to a good 30 minutes, which is impressive. I think he took some liberties leaving it that long, some people will complain that it drags but Nolan did the best with the material he was given.
We heard similar things from Lindy Hemming back in November when the January issue of Empire became known. She said that Bane was "injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can't survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at the back, where there are two canisters of whatever it isthe anesthetic."
