the 89th Annual Academy Awards - Part 1

To me this feels like Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction again.
I liked Gump, saw it in the theater and watched it again on TV, but have no desire to see it again, but I saw Pulp Fiction several times in theater and to this day if I see it on TV I have the urge to watch it again. It was fresh and amazingly crafted and revitalized the careers of much of its cast and has stood the test of time.

Moonlight is a fine movie, but do I think I'll ever feel the need to watch it again years down the road? Not bloody likely, but I know I'll be happy to watch LLL in the future.

What's nuts is that while I agree that Forrest Gump went against better comp, Shawshank Redemption was more than worthy to win it too. Universal message or hope and resiliency that can inspire all ppl. I'm huge on Pulp Fiction, some of the most unique filmmaking that expanded films stylistically. I still consider Shawshank the best of the bunch. What a year '94 was!

Moonlight will have its paragraphs in film text books due to the cinematography, intimacy of story and editing but film being a visual medium will place La La Land as the opening of chapters in that same book.

That is his fault then.

You guys are being unfair to Beatty. The guy is 79 years old. There is a good chance he couldn't even read the small print. It looked like he turned to Dunaway to figure out what to do, and she was the one who read the name.

Exactly also the presenters job is to read what they are handed over. They were handed over the wrong thing. No one was stepping in and he showed it to Faye who wrongly assumed he was doing some bit for comedy/suspense. Nothing like this ever happened before so Betty had every right to be confused and Faye had every right to assume what she glanced at the card was right

Doesn't that kind of prove he could read it though? All he or Faye had to say is they had the wrong envelope.

They didn't read what they were handed. That is the entire issue. Why are you skipping that bit?

I loved how there were so many newbies winning this year.

I can kind of understand Violas speech, i think she meant celebrating life as in adapting someones life for everyone to enjoy, something like that. To me it wasn't a dig at doctors or anything.

He proabably was confused! Stop hating on him. i think him and Faye looked great. I hope they are okay today.

What on Earth are you talking about. Betty saw 'Emma Stone, La La Land' was confused, showed it to Faye she read LLL part omitting Stone in all the excitement

It isn't about being a dig. It was about how self-important she acted. Historians and journalist do these things. Hell, it is the only reason these stories are able to be made into films. Those who preserve them.

Yeah I didn't see it that way.

Which shows they did not read what was written. Emma Stone, La La Land is a big hint they got the wrong card. The card is not formatted that way. It is such a obvious thing, it shouldn't be an issue.

Relax... No one's hating on anyone. :funny: We don't even know these people personally to warrant an emotion as strong as hate.

Nah, I hate Warren Beatty with the power of a thousands suns now. :o

It's live TV. It's BP, the biggest deal. Dunaway made the awful mistake but I'd like to see how you would handle it in her age and with this much pressure.

One thing I'm wondering about is that I know there are rehearsals for the presenters a day or so prior so were they given a sample of what they should expect to see once they open the envelope? Because that would've helped a lot and possibly prevented this fiasco...

You are avoiding the point. One that is kind irrefutable. You can continue to bring u up their age, but that doesn't change the issue. They didn't read the card right. Beatty even clearly knew it and froze. They messed up. Not the end of the world, obviously. But to complain about the producer "aggressively" taking the card out of his hand... come on.

Fine! That @$#%#$%#%$# @%$#$^&*^&^@#$@, right?! :oldrazz:

I would expect so. Though it isn't mandatory. You don't have to do rehearsal it seems. Scarlett mentioned electing to do it.

Come on what? Have some respect for older people and legendary actors. A mistake was made, one that the person who handed them the wrong envelope is responsible for. it doesn't excuse the producer's behavior towards Betty in the slightest.

The envelopes are sealed until the moment they are opened on stage

It is inexcusable.

Btw i was confused when Faye read out La la Land and it cut to the La la Gang getting up and walking to the stage how the commentator lady was talking about la la land. I thought they would be prepared backstage for moonlight and played that narration.
