the 89th Annual Academy Awards - Part 1

This was a goof up on PwC's part. Should be interesting going into work today knowing it was your firm that caused this mess. lol

Lol, they're doing my firm's auditing this week. If they get on my nerves, I'll bring this up.

That passive agressive fat bald producer from la la land was rude af! He SNATCHED that enevlope out of warrens hand. It was so disrespectful! It wasn't Warrens fault. he should apologise immediately for doing that to warren. I think he loved being in the spotlight

I agree it was a little rude. But to be fair, none of the shows producers were stepping in to end the confusion and he wanted to clear it up quickly as possible. The best way to do that was to show the card. He was being decisive and respectful to the producers of Moonlight. Considering the high they were on from having thought they won, they showed tremendous grace.

I also think Beatty did the best he could given the situation. He clearly knew something was wrong, but didn't know how to stop the flow of evening. So he was stalling for time, hoping one of the show's producers would come out. He then gave Dunaway the card, not to throw her under the bus, but to see if she was seeing the same thing. She was caught up in the moment, thinking he was joking around, and just read the movie title. You can hear him say to her" But it was Emma Stone on it" after she announces it.

Poor Faye must be the most embarrassed.

You have to feel bad for Faye Dunaway. First major appearance in a while, and you're humiliated.

If you wanted to humiliate someone else you could probably do this too by announcing someone else is the winner, allowing them to revel in the win and then announce that it's a mistake and announce the real winner. Of course it would be a *****ey move to do but my point is that wouldn't it be equally humiliating for the person who thought they won, just like it was for the Columbian Miss Universe with Steve Harvey?

Wow. Just... Wow. Such silliness.

I cannot blame her because she obviously thought Warren was doing some funny bit with the envelope. About 5 seconds into LLL people standing up you can hear Betty saying "it says Emma Stone?" and her going "WHAT?!" :funny:

I don't understand how La La Land won the awards it did only to lose Best Picture.

I guess I need to see Moonlight. Last night's conclusion was really bizarre and when it first happened, I assumed it was kind of stunt.

Congrats to all the winners, happy for Davis, Ali & Stone.

La La Land's legacy will forever be solidified with the flub. People will always remember the film which is a huge victory in the grand scheme. However, I feel like Moonlight's victory is being swept under the rug a bit. What should be the #1 story of the day is playing second fiddle to the flub.

I hate that this best picture announcement blunder overshadowed the winners.

I love Viola's speech, I was so moved! The rest I didn't watch except for some other small clips.

I used to not understand how a film that won Best Director could lose Best Picture until I saw Gravity. That film was not the best film of the year but Cuaron directed his ass off for that film.

I hated her speech. The line about her profession was the only one that celebrated life was nauseating and self-important.

Agreed I rolled my eyes so damn hard at that line, give me a ****ing break.

You know which profession celebrates life? Doctors. Because they literally help bring life into this world.

Some actors/actresses are so out of touch with reality it's scary.

I hadn't heard that line. It is... unfortunate.

On another note, I never understand when Best Picture and Best Director are not the same. I get it, different categories. It still doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

Think of it this way. In 2009, which film was the best one? Avatar or The Hurt Locker? I say Hurt Locker. But which Director was more impressive? I say James Cameron.

You might do the best job at directing, but still not have the best film due to a weak script or something else that was out of place.

It started out fine with this:

“You know, there is one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered and that’s the graveyard.People ask me all the time — what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? And I say exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories — the stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition, people who fell in love and lost.”

And then she decided to say this:

“I became an artist and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.”

Look at Spotlight last year, almost the same situation. Won Best Picture, and then only Best Screenplay, which implies that the film was judged for the strength of its writing (no way is La La Land the best written movie of the year, though I liked it).

Best Picture is like a sum of its parts category. Just like in football, one team can have the best quarterback, best receivers, best defensive line, but can still be beat by another team that has strengths in other areas it can exploit.

What about Cameron's direction was better then what was in the Hurt Locker?

Directing is not just about set pieces. It involving every single thing that makes it into the movie. Every line of dialogue, every editing decision, every performance allowed into the film, every frame. A director is directly responsible for the quality of a film. If it is the best film of the year, it is down to the director. A weak script is irrelevant because the director can transform it in many ways.

And then she decided to say this:

Yeah, I agree. She started out fine but then she ended it with her head jammed up her own ass. Hollywood really loves to congratulate themselves.
