I never quite understand the "looks liek a videogame" rhetoric that gets thrown around. All these dang cbms have videogame-y effects to some degree. Its kind of the nature of the beast. And it also doesnt the mean the movie's gonna be bad. Just look at Black Panther, a freaking fantastic movie with lots of REALLYYY rough unfinished cgi in its third act.
Well, it's true that most of these characters do things that defy physics, and it sure takes some CGI to realize them visually. But there are still renderings that are more, shall we say,
"complete" than others. The sense of weight and precision of movement are there. The lights and detailed textures make the whole thing palpable, all that sort of things.
Here in that trailer, I find that a lot of shots just miss pretty much all of that. It looks super smooth and it moves too perfectly, it just looks
programmed.
The way I see
(and use) that
"it looks like a video game!" formula is a way to sums up that the special effects simply misses their tasks.
Sure, deep down you know the things you're watching aren't real, but if you suddenly feel like out of the movie because the picture stops looking like it was filmed to become something too obviously out of a machine, then it's done.
A good analogy would probably be a magic trick. You know it's fake, but as long as you don't feel the mechanics, the effect will work and you'll accept to believe in it.
