The Amazing Spider-Man: The Game

I liked the game a lot, even I can admit that the only two good things were the web-swinging and spider-sense.

Really? That's odd. Because NPD ranked Spidey 2 the #8 top-selling game of the year for 2004. I'd say that meant that a lot of the buyers were *not* just Spidey fanboys.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_in_video_gaming

And just for the record, Batman: Arkham Asylum never even cracked the Top 10 in 2009.

Would you like to start admitting that your *opinion* that Spidey 2 wasn't all that and a bag o' chips does not jibe with the *fact* that the game was huge in 2004, groundbreaking in 2004, and continues to be a fan favorite and continues to be recalled fondly on Best Of lists by fans and gamerpress alike even to this day?

And then Batman went on to sell about 5 million copies. Wolvieboy already admitted that the web swinging was great. If you look around the web and on the best-of lists, you'll see that that is the reason people loved it.

And it wasn't groundbreaking. I will give it that it was one of the first open world games (that wasn't Elder Scrolls and etc) that wasn't a GTA-clone and expanded the genre immensely. It paved the way for inFamous and Assassin's Creed, but the actual groundbreaking was done in 2001 by GTA 3.

The web swinging in Spider-Man 2 was awesome, and it propelled the game from mediocrity to a great game for its time. But that is basically all it had going for it. Sure everything else was nice and all, but the web swinging is the only thing that has stood the test of time. And all the other things the game had were things that other games did better even at the time of its release.

I would love to see the FreeFlow combat system with a Spider-Man twist: I can imagine a hybrid of the Arkham games' attack warning and counter system and Spider-Man 2: The Game's Spider-Sense and dodging. I can see Spider-Man taking on a whole group of thugs (some of them armed), dodging bullets in beteween punches and kicks.

I find it amusing how certain posters will keep pointing to San Andreas to compare it to NYC in Spiderman 2, yet fail to grasp that San Andreas was built on GTA III and Vice City whereas Spiderman 2 was built on........ itself. How many of you actually played Spiderman 2 (and the games before it) upon release?

There was plenty of evidence throughout the game that the developers had much more in mind. There was alot of work left undone because they were forced to release it to meet the deadline. How many of you experienced the random copter getaway robbery? Yeah, it's in there. You can bet they had a lot more random cimes in mind than what saw release.

Spiderman 2 got the random crimes correct... to start. As reptitive as they got, the actual mechanic of just swinging around and happening by an event in progress was part of what made it fun. It's what makes Red Dead Redemption as awesome as it is. What was needed was more variety and less lameness ("My balloon!") Spiderman 3 went in the wrong direction with random gang faction attacks being about the only events and WoS only continued to head in the wrong direction. Crimes in NYC need to reflect everyday life....purse snatchings were a good example.

A fully realized NYC that jumps off of what made SM2 work and truly takes it to the next level is what we are aiming for. Every release since SM2 has gone backwards on what made SM2 great. It wasn't just the swinging, but the promise and possibilities as well.

^I agree about all you say there Jericho. It made some thing very right! It had some heart. But I would STILL say, that even for its day, it never was as good quality wise as Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are for its day.

But I'm getting sick of this discussion now. Some people love SM2, some think its overrated. I hope we'll get some actual things about the ASM game to discuss soon.

I got the game on its release and I played the **** out of it. I probably poured hundreds of hours into that game. And yes, I got the helicopter robbery. And it doesn't matter that they had more in mind, or that San Andreas wasn't built from the ground up. Spider-Man 2 came out the way it did, no ifs and buts are gonna change that.

Spider-Man 2 upon its release wasn't a gamechanger, it can't be compared to Arkham Asylum simply because it wasn't as good as the other games released at the time. 2004 wasn't that long ago. The web swinging from S-M2 is probably one of the greatest game mechanics ever, but that doesn't make the rest of the games various mediocre to good features go away.

EDIT: I don't think Spider-Man 2 is overrated. But I remember it for what it was. Its got a solid 80 on metacritic, which sounds about right to me.

Spidey 2 *does* still stand the test of time. Even though *you* might not agree, gamer nation and the gamer press *do*. According to Wiki, the Official PlayStation 2 Magazine ranked the game #50 of the "Top 100 PS2 Games of All Time," and in the Screwattack top ten 'Top 10 Movie-Based Games' Spider-Man 2 came in eighth. It still remains one of the go-to games to reference in arguments over whether or not movie tie-ins ever really work. And the combat you seem to remember as being generic certainly was not, and featured the most complex fighting combos of any Spidey game to date. It was almost like an MVC minigame every time you took on a thug.

In comparing Spidey 2 to AC, though, of course there's no contest. Spidey 2 was the best of its day, and AC is the best of its day. And I agree with you that Spidey deserves a game of that quality....retreads of the Spidey 2 formula (Spidey 3, WoS, etc.) are stale; trying to boost 2099's nonexistent popularity has been fail for SD and EoT; and don't even get me started on "Spidey and His Amazing Friends or Foes." The ASM game coming out has the potential to do something great for Spidey, but I ain't holding my breath....*certainly* not something as good as Rocksteady.

i didn't find the game mediocre at all... the game could have honestly had no story.. and i'd have been incredibly happy swinging around, getting upgrades, doing the black cat mission storylines, and fighting a random villain.

Agreed. It was such a fun game. Hell, it still is.

Spider-Man 2 sold so well because it was attatched to one of the biggest films of the time. ALL movie based games have inflated sales, which is precisely why they are made.

that's not entirely true... movie games these days have HORRIBLE reputations

not to mention... by that logic, the spider-man 1 game should have sold more than 2... (which it didnt). Spider-Man 1's box office was more than $37,000,000 more than spider-man 2 performed....

All I want is a Spidey game that is really fun and capture's the essence of the character on this generation of consoles. S-M2 still is THE best SPidey game and it is still incredibly fun. But I want another incredibly fun Spider-Man game on his generation of consoles. HOpefully, Beenox can do this. Only time will tell, I guess.

i think that's what we'd all like. though... id really like one someday from the comics (with 90s animated series voices :D)

I hope Beenox doesn't make this, I would like to see another company try their hand at making a Spider-Man game.

Web slinging in Edge of Time was bad. It's nowhere near as good as it used to be. All the Spider-Man games since Spider-Man 2 took a decline.

Also the next gen. Spider-Man games on PS1 and Dreamcast were pretty groundbreaking for their time. They were also hits and got good reviews and were well received. The first PS1 Spider-Man games utilized the Tony Hawk pro skater engine.

There's already a trailer. And Beenox is making it. If it makes you feel better, the game has over a year of work, it's built on an entire different engine than SD and EoT, and both the web-swinging and the combat have been reworked.

Spectacular Spider-Man voices please! Only 90s series voices I liked were Spidey, Venom & Carnage.

-Spidey/peter
-May

-Felicia
-Ock
-Venom
-Carnage
-Shocker
-rhino
-silvermane
-kingpin

all were very iconic to me.

Another list of Spider-Man characters, brought to you by Spideyboy! :P

How about reference to earlier games? I liked Toby's reference to Enter Electro in SM3 Scorpion mission 1, I laugh every time I hear that

What does he say exactly?

And which game is better, SM3 or WoS? I never bought either, but I think I might since I haven't bought a Spider-Man game since USM, even though he's my favorite superhero.

spider-man 3 on wii... you get shriek and morbius (rather than kingpin and scorpion) and they incorporated the black suit much better

About breaking the generators "Actually that kind of reminds me of my last fight with Electro, except these things are smarter"

I like SM3 a lot more, it's my favorite Spidey game so far, and has some of the finest boss fights in any game like the fight against Harry
Decent complaints it received:
  • Camera dances when you're in a tight spot
  • Glitchy, very glitchy (I had 80% funny, 10% street, 10% story, but not forcing me to reset, and not happening that often)
  • Lack of street mission variety
  • Cinematics don't look impressive (compare them to SM2 and Prototype)
  • Combat doesn't respond at certain moments (it happened to me rarely, I finished the game 31 times)
And then there are those two silly missions, or three, beyond that I can't see all that many flaws

WoS has some stuff better, like combat and more polished faces, you get it for gameplay alone if all you want to do is impressive combat, other than that:
Ignore the story for the most part
Spider-Man is badly characterized, as well as the "Black-Ladies" (not ethnicity)
Jump is so badass you can't jump more than two stories up
Poleswing is downgraded a lot from the previous games in some ways

spider-man 3 on wii... you get shriek and morbius (rather than kingpin and scorpion) and they incorporated the black suit much better
This game does better in story department, and no silly missions like the one you mentioned before "Gangsta Girl Beauty Queen Pageant", or "Take photo of the UFO"
The rest are better in the main game

If you dislike one of them or both of them, be happy the games are rather cheap now, better than paying full price

Wait for The Amazing Spider-Man to come out, it may prove to be awesome
