Something in tone with TWS sounds great to me. Light and fun is great, but it has to have that edge for me. That edge is what makes it more fun, more enjoyable for me. I had way more fun with TWS then the Avengers.

Count me in as well. TWS had the perfect tone. It has serious stakes, but it still had moments of levity, a heavy cool factor (I mean, falcon, dammit, how cool is he?), and while it was serious, it was also really fun and engaging. AoU having more serious stakes is a plus to me, and I'm sure it will be more memorable than TA because of that.

Early reviews mean nothing one way or the other but it's music to my ears hearing that it is darker and isn't as "fun." I was one of the few who didn't even remotely love the first film and I didn't love the excessively airless fluffy tone either. I'm sure the tone isn't excessively dark nor was I asking for it to be but I was hoping for a tone more in line with Winter Soldier.

I loved that TWS had a tone that it didn't stray from, and portrayed the seriousness of the story well. Similarly, GOTG had a more light hearted approach which also worked and did justice to the story being told. I think problems occur when movies try to include equal amounts of both.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Russos change the tone of the next Avengers movie.

One thing they won't do is duplicate the tone of TWS. They've stated in interviews that even Cap 3's tone and perspective will be very different.

Personally, I love the first Avengers film. It remains my favorite MCU movie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a very close second...more like 1-A).

As someone who grew up reading Avengers and West Coast Avengers comics in the 80s, it was the most fun I've had watching a film in a movie theater. Pure joy that took me back to my youth! That being said, I'm glad to hear that this is a much different film. I wouldn't want Whedon to make the exact same movie. I want to see character growth and higher stakes. I want to see new situations and consequences. And, considering the films that Marvel Studios has on the horizon, the tone should be darker. As another franchise said, "there's a storm coming."

yeah its become something of a fashion on these boards to hate on the first Avengers these days but that movie rocked my face off. Just rewatched it yesterday for the first time in almost a year and it was just as kickass and joyous as i remember it.

Can't have been around the opinions on a Marvel movie. He loves the MCU and thought TWS, GotG and DoFP were fantastic.
