Scott had the same opinion on TWS so not exactly surprised. He's entitled to feel that way though. :)

Even on it's own merits there are flaws some of the reviewers had with the film though.

Funny stuff is... some reviewers say its overcrowed and overstuffed and some say its not overcrowed and overstuffed at all.

Remember when Scott Mendelson gave positive reviews to TASM2 and Transformers 4? Good times.

I just checked Rotten Tomatoes and the majority of reviews are positive (24+/3-). 95% rating atm. So thats not bad at all.

The positive reviews make me excited, while the negative ones seem like confused viewers that didnt quite get it.

I dont usually listen to critics when Im interested in movies. Its just this is such a big deal for us fans, you gotta see what people think of it.

Whedon brings a depth and wit to his storytelling that you will never find in a Transformers movie. Even so, the final showdown is a little anti-climactic. That isn’t because of the special effects, which are truly spectacular in their own earth-juddering way, just as you would expect them to be given the film’s reported $250 million budget. It’s simply that Ultron and his vast army of robots aren’t “real” enough to make worthy adversaries for the Avengers.

All the top critics and 90% overall so far. Not seeing a problem so far.

If Whedon made a film more for himself and for cb fans - idiosyncratically and unapologetically - it will almost certainly cost him percentage points on RT. He didn't completely hedge his bets this time around with "we know this is just a bit of fun" tone and humor. So be it.

Personally, I can't wait to see what Joss has come up with.

AGE OF ULTRON is a deeper, more complex movie than AVENGERS. The reviews won't be as ecstatic as a result. That's ok.

This is not a comparison of QUALITY, but the difference between AVENGERS and AOU is the same as between STAR WARS and EMPIRE.

STAR WARS is fun and the gang all hangs out. EMPIRE they're on their heels and split up. Dynamics change. Same with AOU.

^^ Cool! Im not a Devin fan usually but Im glad hes praising AOU.

You can definitely tell that the darkness and complexity are really bringing a lot of reviewers' scores down since they mention how they missed the "fun", "warmth", and "simplicity" from TA. I'm in the boat where if Whedon had kept everything the same, it'd be a boring film so I welcome the change to the status quo here.

Then I'm good, and hopefully most of us will be.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with a little darkness and melodrama.

The SHH/CS review and Slashfilm both mention this.

These moments are necessary to set the table but they do give the film a mild case of “Iron Man 2 syndrome.

webfoot: I agree, he had to tell this story from a different perspective rather than just doing a safe copy of A1. This is about the long run of the MCU, not just about being a summer blockbuster.

Ah yes, always seems to be the case when someone dislikes something you don't.

I knew it from the first trailer that some people wouldn't take to this film as much as the first, it's simple...the first film was quite possibly the easiest film to root for and like, it ticked almost every box imaginable, theres no chance that a sequel to that could ever NOT disappoint SOME people. It's the same effect for some people and TDK - TDKR, no matter what it did...it was never going to reach that level for a section of the audience.

That's not to say Avengers 2 won't be a better film for a lot of peeps, it's just harder for more people to like it. (if that makes sense)

Joss Whedon said after the 1st Avengers came out that the sequel would be more intimate rather than a grand scale slugfest. it would be different.
I guess some critics just got used to the Marvel funfest it usually provides
and did not expect this film to be more intimate and serious

Sick and tired of this whole anti-dark bandwagon, and the automatic association with the opposite being "fun" and "positive", Daredevil was dark and brooding, yet no one gives that any crap...how hypocritical.

Spoiler theory on the mid credit scene...

Is it possible that Loki-as-Odin gave Thanos the infinity gauntlet from the Asgard vault?
