QUESTION: In pics taken during filming of AoU, there had been some with what they were guessing was SHIELD recruits or something. Now that the movie is done and out, was that scene ditched or was it part of the new Avengers headquarters B-roll footage?

Looking at it from other angle, we may be closing to a saturation of the market. I don't know if we want that.
If the GA stops being interested in them due to genre fatigue, they will stop being profitable and studios will drop them.

I'm really fearful of the genre not keeping its good health until IW1 and 2 arrive :csad:

That's exactly the problem. A few bad films will sour the GA and expedite the over saturation. If Fox keeps up with DOFP in terms of quality then we're in good shape. If Deadpool is a breath of fresh air then the genre as a whole will reap the benefits. But if Fantastic Four sucks then it's going to be a big dent in genre as a whole. This is why I'm glad Marvel stepped in and de-railed Sony's plans for Sinister Six, Venom, and Aunt May (if that was ever serious at all). The need to produce a Marvel film every ten years to retain the rights accelerates this problem as well.

Above CBM genre fatigue I fear people may start getting franchise fatigue as well. Hunger Games is about to close in on their fourth movie, Transformers working on its fifth, Sony wants to push a shared Ghostbusters universe, Universal wants to make a shared Monsters universe, Harry Potter had eight films and now is getting at least one spin-off, and now besides the main episodic Star Wars installments we're getting Star Wars spin-offs there as well. While I'm looking forward to some of these films a lot of them just seem like overkill. Everybody is so desperate to duplicate Marvel's model or to force a franchise juggernaut down our throats, and that's accelerating us towards the point of diminishing returns. I think a day may come where the GA longs for more one-off films and originality.

Let's look at a hypothetical situation. Both Ant-Man and Fantastic Four do horribly, both in box office and critical reception. Would that change the plans studios have prepared?

I don't think so. Marvel has established credibility and goodwill with the GA, I think they could recover from one real failure. But if Both Ant-Man and Civil War failed? Then I think the only goodwill they'd have going forward would be curiosity in new characters and people just wanting to see Infinity War finally come to a head. Trust would be lost and box office would hurt.

The fact that Fantastic Four already has a sequel date planned is preposterous to me. Way to put the cart before the horse. Marvel has built up to their release slate, they've earned it. But Fox has mostly failed with the Fantastic Four franchise, and are taking a gamble in a new direction. If this movie fails I have no idea what Fox would do, I'm not sure if they'll be bold enough to admit the mistake and cancel the sequel or make drastic changes to the creative team to rectify it. At least the latest trailer looks pretty decent.

In the interest of fairness I want to say that Fox has mostly earned the ability to announce a slate of X-Men films. Aside from X3 and O:W, they've had a string of good flicks and have built the franchise.

We, of course, can't predict what will happen. We can't even say for sure that IW will be that great. I certainly like the idea that Marvel is expanding and they are keeping it to about 2 movies a year. I think they are developing a pretty good track record for bringing in unknowns and making them interesting (hit one out of the park with GotG). Hopefully it bodes well for Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Inhumans, etc. Marvel can withstand a stinker or two, but I hope that doesn't happen. DC doesn't, IMO, have the same cushion. If they don't do a good job on BvS, it bodes ill for them. I wasn't that impressed with the trailer and that causes me some concern. Others liked it and I hope I don't have anything to worry about. I was probably comparing it to the AoU trailer (which I thought was brilliant) so maybe that's why I wasn't overly excited about it.

Only time will tell.

They have made one good movie. They've made other films before Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but they mostly sucked.

Ant Man would probably become a Avengers only character like The Hulk(I actually see this happening either way, there won't be a Ant Man sequel) and F4 would hopefully revert to Marvel. But none of this would change the overall plans for the MCU or the X-Men universe.

If the product/films become more formulaic and more susceptible to spoilers and overhype then, yes. There will be fatigue. (I for one am feeling it, but I've been hanging out at SHH. I don't have the fresh perspective that I've had going into every other CBM.) What is up until IWs? AntMan, CA:CW, BP, CapMarvel, Dr. Strange, Gardians2? If each one brings something fresh (I expect this from Doc Strange, more than any of the others), then we'll be in good shape.

They did a great job with TWS and I imagine they were awarded that gig based on previous successes. The director (director team in this case) has to have some sort of vision for a project and the administrative skills to get it done on time and on budget. And it probably helps that there are two of them. They had that and the skills to tell the story effectively. That's why TWS was a good movie. The story was well developed, the characters felt right, the storytelling flowed well and the action was tight. I also found the score -- while not distinctive in a stand-alone sense -- to be quite dynamic and fitting. They obviously have faith in the Russos (and I'm sure also in Marcus/McFreely). At the very least, I think Cap is in good hands.

That's exactly the problem. A few bad films will sour the GA and expedite the over saturation. If Fox keeps up with DOFP in terms of quality then we're in good shape. Ha ha! Aunt May, indeed. (everytime the AMC Movie talk gang talk about it, I have to change my underwear.) It is the branding of every movie series as a "Universe" that may be the biggest factor in generating CBM/franchise fatigue. At some point the pendulum will start swinging in another direction. That's only to be expected.

I do think, though, that IWs could be the end of the Avengers franchise proper. If there is any juice left in the Universe after 2020, it's likely to be solo franchises, standalones, or standa-alone team up movies (where, as in Guardians, the whole team is the character with no need for multi-film build up.)

I also am very hopeful about the Dr. Strange movie. Other than Thor, he was my favorite Marvel character when I was growing up. The Ancient One, Baron Mordo, Dormammu, Umar....way cool. I'm really, really rooting even more for Captain Marvel to be a great movie and do well as I think the character could, for many reasons, be a linchpin for MCU.

Man I hope they pull this next phase off......

It's always important that when you like one filmmaker, you should hate another that handled a similar property. What do you think movies are, art & entertainment? This is a competition, dammit!

According to fanboys Whedon is the anti-Christ now...

Just a very select few. Let's not make mountains out of molehills like those select few do....I guess I could be considered a fanboy and think no such thing about him, Kevin, or the Russos.

Some people think he made a really killer, enjoyable movie (like me), some people didn't like it for whatever reason, some think he should have shut up about the problems he ran into making it, some people think it was fine talking about it.

Big deal. Who cares? Last time I checked, the world was still spinning. I'm just glad I got a movie I enjoyed.

Yeah....I just can't wait to argue about whether Ant-Man, AoU, and everything else was good or sucked. Everyone should listen to me and not other people because I'm objective and always right......

Maybe that's why I liked GotG so much. It really did feel like a breath of fresh air. It had a completely different tone than most of the other MCU movies. It was just a flat out fun romp. I hope they can kill it again with GotG II. I loved the characters.

lol woke up to a lot of LOUD thunder here about 4am

What was described by the Weather forecasters here as a "Cold Spring Storm" belted Southern California with a whopping 1/5 of an inch of rain and the weather dropped below a frigid 60 degrees.

I was outside at about 3am in a tshirt, shorts, and my tevas walking my dogs. When it comes to their thoughts about the weather, people in SoCal are the weirdest.......
