Age of Ultron The Avengers 2! The Official News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 52

The point that I agree with most is "unrealistic nerd expectation." Fans really are spoiled these days. After the first movie, Joss is a genius who is Marvel's golden boy. After AOU (a movie that most people seem to still consider to be good, if perhaps not great/fantastic), now those same people take constant shots at him, he's a hack, and good riddance.

Jeez, I wouldn't blame him if he wasn't a little bitter. Fans will turn on you in an instant, and even if you haven't actually made a BAD movie, just maybe not the "bestest best thing ever." The fact that I like this film even more than the first and blame Marvel itself for most of the problems (HT was also spot on with the whole "they were cramming in too many teases to future films" thing) only make this all the more sad imo.

While I do admit that there were unrealistic expectations for Whedon regarding this film, I also believe that there were a lot of things that could have easily been improved on or avoided.

I mean Whedon gushed over how he knew that he wanted Ultron to appear for the sequel prior to even getting the job and what Ultron meant to him.

Yet, Ultron ended up becoming a joke of a villain, something that Marvel has been criticized for creating an abundance of.

I don't think the solution is to make the film dark like Nolan's films or as gritty as Netflix's Daredevil series, but if the likes of the Winter Soldier comes off as a more menacing and threatening villain than someone like Ultron, then something is wrong.

None of the intended villains came off threatening or effective. The only characters that came off as a threat in this film were the Hulk (while on a rampage) and Scarlet Witch.

And I say this not as a shipper, but if Whedon was so adamant about having Widow involved in a romantic arc with one of the Avengers, then why not have it with someone where it would feel like a natural progression, whether it be Hawkeye (before coming up with the idea that he had a secret family stashed in the woods) or even Steve Rogers who a lot people agree that she had good chemistry with in TWS.

But like the Honest Trailer stated, this wasn't a bad film. Just not a great one imho for quite a few folks out there.

It's ironic that the Avengers film that looks most visually impressive is the one that isn't universally loved like the first film, which I still maintain my belief to this day that the cinematography for that film was horrible.

Honest Trailers was so on point with this one

Not really. For one thing, they didn't mention Red Skull or Arnim Zola as a great Marvel villains. I know it was a gag, but those characters were monstrous and memorable.

That being said, HT was funny. It almost always is.

Oh and Vision was called a lot of times.
"I had a vision" Thor
"Why does your vision sound like Jarvis?" Cap
"My Vision..." Ultron
"Friday,the vision?" Tony
"The mind Stone is safe with the Vision" Thor

I'll give you Zola, and also Pierce (I really liked him to). Although I wouldn't characterized them as "great," merely "good." They're not all that memorable outside of the movie that they appeared in.

Red Skull, no. He was really underwhelming. Such a waste of a potentially great villain, imo.

1. I liked Ultron.

2. Pairing her up with Hawkeye, or Cap, or Winter Soldier, wouldn't have been any more "natural." That's more fans WANTING their preferred ships, rather than the films doing much to "build up" to them. Her dynamic with Hawkeye was ambiguous in TA, with no real build up to a romance. Them being best friends, which it turned out to be, is just as "natural" in that situation. And people need to get over the Cap thing, there was NO attempt by the Russo's to set them up either. They were more like "bros" in TWS (heck one of the running gags was her trying to set him up with other women throughout the movie, and her last scene involved trying to set him up with Sharon). As for "buildup," well that's an unfortunate consequence of Banner not appearing in any of the Phase Two film, aside from his throwaway cameo in IM3, and BW only appearing in one (which wasn't IM3).

I disagree. The tracking shot, 360 degree pan and Thor vs Iron Man (to name but a few) were all excellently shot IMO. Watch Transformers to see some truly horrible cinematography.

I enjoyed the film but I can't argue with the points they made despite them being all in fun.

Same here, in fact they got pretty much every problem I had with the movie spot on.

Personally though I still wish Joss was doing IW.

For once, I am absolutely in agreement with you! What happened to Whedon also befell Sam Raimi, Jon Favreau and (to an extent) Christopher Nolan. And the same thing will happen again if the current "Wonder Kids" of the CBM genre (namely, the Russo Bros, Bryan Singer and James Gunn) are seen to falter with Civil War, Apocalypse and GoTG 2 respectively.

From what I can tell, most of the criticisms comes from people seemingly looking for something to be upset about.

No, not really.

 I have plenty of criticisms .against the movie that are simple genuine problems with it, nothing more. I also don't hate Joss Whedon all of a sudden and wish he was doing IW. I will still be looking out for what he does next also.

Why? So he can turn Thanos into a joke like he did with Ultron?:whatever::o

No, not really.

Yeah you're right, people completely turning on film makers for not consistently meeting the extremely high bar set by their previous work is completely rational and warranted :o

Are you actually suggesting that many of the complaints and criticisms of this movie are not rational or warranted?

When lots of people only say "THANK GOD Whedon is not coming back for more","so glad he left!","Ultron was a freaking comedian!",yes it'not very rational. I'm talking about What I read on the web.

Nope. In my original post, I was responding to someone who mentioned how history has been re-written by some every time a film maker comes out with a disappointing sequel. All of a sudden Sam Raimi never understood Spider-man, Joss Whedon is a misogynist, Jon Favraeu is a hack who got lucky with Iron Man, etc. If that wasn't clear I apologize, but that was the intent of my first comment.

Exactly.

Its so funny because people praised him like a god when the first Avengers film came out.

Those people are idiots, but that last part is rational enough... :o
