For The Avengers, the film to watch out for is Battleship. Members here talk about how the GA love their spectacles... well, Battleship (s***ty or not) IS a spectacle. It's an alien invasion with Transformers-esque visuals, after all.

Hey, if John Carter can be get positive reviews after that god-awful marketing campaign, it's certainly possible for Battleship to surprise alot of folks out there.

For TDKR, whether people agree or not, The Bourne Legacy is that threat, in my opinion.

^ Part of me wants Battleship to flop purely as punishment for studios scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of finding something with name recognition to turn into a film. Biggest issue against Bourne Legacy is the lack of, well Jason Bourne.

I'm pretty sure the majority of America/the world isn't stupid. Some may like Twilight, but I'm pretty sure everyone in existence thinks Battleship will be a POS. I don't think I've come across anyone who can take Battleship seriously.

And yet we have a Clash of the Titans sequel coming up.

Me too.

Seriously Hollywood? Boardgame adaptations? Have you run out of ideas already? Are you this desperate?

True. It's a high risk/high reward film, but the franchise is a brand name. Matt Damon/Jason Bourne or not, this film could still be a legitimate threat. It's up to the GA if they want to see another Bourne movie without Bourne.

Next up is Hungry, Hungry, Hippos: The Movie.

The Avengers is supposed to fear an obscure Depp/Burton film, A Sasha Baron Cohen film(remind me again how he grosses), and Battleship in it's first 3 weeks? You must really assume this movie is bad.

Please don't talk to us about underestimating competition. The only film worth noting that you listed was MIB3.

Did you read my analysis and reasoning thoroughly?

It's not about The Avengers fearing anything....it's about the general movie audience and what new movies THEY will be spending their money on to see for the first time compared to seeing Avengers for the 2nd and 3rd times.

Sorry, that I do not agree with some of the analysis in here about how Avengers will break the 1 Billion mark WW easily and if you think MIB3 is the ONLY film Avengers should worry about, then I think your reaching.

Like I said, we shall see, but once again.....don't underestimate the competition. Getting to 1 billion WW is not going to be easy guy. Whether I'm a "batty" or not is irrelevant.

We said the same thing about John Carter apparently. It was supposedly destined to be a box office bomb, and yet the future looks bright for John Carter right now.

2012 might just be this generation's greatest cinematic year, and so far, 2012 is definitely living up to the hype. I'm not underestimating anybody at this point now.

Battleship is another effects heavy spectacle film.

Why wouldn't the general movie audience want to see it? They like stuff like that. Same as the Avengers...a heavy special effects spectacle film.

John Carter has always looked like a quality film though, people just don't quite understand what it's supposed o be yet. Battleship is just destined to be crap though.

And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the highest grossing year for movies in history. What year actually holds that title though?

They like things like Transformers and The Avengers because they're established franchises with well known characters. Battleship is an adaption of a board game with a random cast and nobody characters. Not every franchise has to start out already established. Pirates of the Caribbean for example, but everything about Pirates was fresh and original and the characters worked. What is there to look forward to about Battleship besides special effects?

I don't know, from the trailers that we have seen, it looked a little ridiculous, I don't care much for the lead actor and the whole thing looked like a Star Wars ripoff (really, some key scenes looked like the gladiator scenes in AOTC) but, trailers can be deceiving, and actors have surprised me on an occasion. So, who knows. It'll be coming out just before my B-Day, maybe I'll go see it with my B-Day money!

Disney has just botched the marketing on John Carter, early reviews indicate its a lot better than it looks.

Also, this year potentially being the top grossing year is no big deal since inflation increases ticket prices every year. Throwing 3D into the mix and its even more inflated. What matters is ticket sales and 2002 holds the record for that while 2011 was its lowest since 1995.

Very true, most people don't what John Carter is about. They've just made assumptions by labeling it an 'Avatar ripoff'.

I gotta go with The Hobbit. That fanbase is immensely large, and the film is just as anticipated as The Avengers and TDKR with almost no competition in December.

Transformers? I guarantee you the vast majority of cinema goers who watched film one had no-idea of Transformers being anything more than a toy.

I hate having to explain this over and over... but if I hear one more person call John Carter a Star Wars or Avatar rip-off I'm going to pull my hair out. John Carter is based on a 100 (yes... one hundred, as in 60 years before star wars) year old book series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. James Cameron, George Lucas and even J.R.R. Tolkein used it as inspiration for Avatar, Star Wars and even Lord of the Rings.

And an animated tv series.

I said I wonder what year holds the title for the highest grossing movies of all time...

There's really no point in explaining on the boards, since the general audience will not perceive it this way. If the movie comes after those they automatically jump to it being a rip-off

2009

Oops. My eyesight is starting to turn on me -- six hours of sleep in two days will do that to me every time.

On that note, my shift is over. Time for some sleep.

My guess is 2002, 2003, or 2009. The amount of tickets sold in those years were insane.

http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/

2010 came pretty close though, which is odd as it only has 2 billion dollar grossing movies, then again 2009 only has one. I woulda thought 2011 would have had more than '10 though with harry potter ending and transformers 3 being dubbed the biggest action movie of all time.

I believe those are only domestic figures. No idea where you would get WW numbers unless you have a whole bunch of time on your hands.

And an animated tv series.

Vast majority still would have associated it with toys. Battleship's a board game that everyone's played. Just saying, they wouldn't have made the movie if they didn't think they could tap into people's awareness of said board game, doesn't matter if it's ****, which it probably will be judging from what we've seen so far.

Only thing that makes Battleship a box office threat is Rihanna. She's pretty much the biggest star in the world right now.

They should make "Wiggly Worms" next.

I want a Connect 4 movie. :hehe:
