The Avengers The Avengers Critics Reviews Thread - Part 2

I keep on refreshing the village voice website to see what they say. They were supposed to have a review out this morning.

I'll assume theirs will be rotten, the VV never likes anything outside of Indie or artsy films really.

Great review Vile. My only issue with your review is that I disagree that the Thor and Iron Man scores weren't memorable. I can understand going with Silvestri because he's a more traditional film scorer, however his style would not have worked in the Thor and Iron Man movies.

Great review!

MAKE MINE MARVEL!!!!!!!

I read the comments. Don't let the nolanites who can't stand to see a real comicbook superhero movie achieve success faze you. Keep going strong!!!

agreed. I will see this on Saturday and for a while over the weekend the anticipation for this film died down for me to a degree, hope I can keep it that way otherwise I may not make it till then.

Edelstein's review is the most positive one I've read from the mainstream press. He totally got what The Avengers is about and he loved it. The fact that all of the top critics who have weighed in thus far have given it positive reviews is very encouraging. Disney's marketing department must be over the moon with the number of great blurbs they have for the critics' opinion ads they will release soon. No need to quote some obscure blog or small-town newspaper when they have TIME, the Rolling Stone and the New York Daily News to cite.

Some people may dismiss critics' reviews, but the fact of the matter is that having prestigeous critics giving positive reviews can really persuade casual moviegoers, parents, and other people who are on the fense about watching a movie to go check it out, especially for a genre movie like The Avengers. GA will think differently of The Avengers when they see accolades from Time, Variety, and Rolling Stone giving it high marks.

Superhero films(not starring Will Smith when he still had his mojo) tend to be more susceptible to being effected by critics reviews from what I can see. Stuff like Twilight or TF aren't. They're critic proof. Superhero films traditionally aren't mainly because quality is demanded more from the fan base(hardcore and casual alike).

I remember when Spider-man 2 got rave reviews Sony was very smart about marketing that and created a TV spot that included all of the blurbs from top critics plastered over the final Spidey swinging sequence through the city. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney did something similar.

I imagine that Disney will splice together two types of spots: one with specific blurbs from the Top Critics (maybe peppered with a couple of overseas papers too) or one where the names of the publications flash onscreen over the spot as it plays out. I think the latter format is extremely effective; I personally have a stronger reaction to the blurb spots when they simply flash the names of the critics and their papers/magazines over the spot itself.

Another positive review, this one is from Joshua Miller (of CHUD):

REVIEW: THE AVENGERS (JOSH’S TAKE)

There may be some minor spoiler and even some four-letter words here, so read it with precaution. Here's a great paragraph summing up his experience:

There are countless more things I want to say and moments I want to single out, but it is hard to do so without getting monotonous or into spoilers. It is a credit to the film that I’ve already blathered about it at length, yet I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of its pleasures. To answer my own question from before — Was it worth treating these disparate franchises as prologues to a whole other film? Yes. A hundred times yes. And I’m fine with them wasting the entire next round of sequels to set-up The Avengers 2 if it will be as good as this. They can even toss in some new bull****. Ant Man. Black Panther. Whatever. Bring it. Your move DC.

4.5 star out of 5

Well I did say they had some decent pieces they just weren't "that memorable" ;) not that they weren't "memorable at all" ;) . Silvestri's Avengers just sounded the most cinematic to me.

Gotcha! ;)

Yeah I think Silvestri is more akin to guys like John Williams/Jerry Goldsmith, i.e. guys that are very traditional to film scoring, and his themes do stick with you. I love the Cap theme, especially with the ending credits with all the old WW2 artwork.

The Iron Man sound track, is very minimalistic, and very modern, but I think it works well for that movie. I just love when Tony is putting on the armor, and the distorted guitar with the strings backing it up. It just fit perfectly for the character and the moment. Obviously I don't think that works for Cap or for Avengers for that matter.

I've heard bits of the Avengers sountrack from the clips, like the fight between IronMan and Thor, and the music is perfect.

Friday can't get here soon enough!

And guys please continue to avoid any and all SPOILERS. Great job so far!

And make sure you actually READ the reviews your linking to, so you can warn us of potential SPOILERS before we click. Thanks!

Yeah guys, dont expect a positive review from the village voice. Im sure they've had enough of all this "silliness" by now. They gave IM1 a good review, but that seems like a long time ago. I will say that at least one of their critics is an actual comic book fan (or was as a child), so who know?

Screw Access Hollywood, regardless of their "review". All those shows need to go away forever.

Here is a review from Access Hollywood. He ggives it a fresh rating on RT but the review seems largely negative. Weird. A few spoilers in there

Funny, I saw this guy on Access Hollywood an hour ago and he was giving his review, pretty much the same as what's on the page and the two anchors were throwing stuff at him; they liked the movie at least the guy did.
