I sat on writing the review for a while and then I felt like I had this profound revelation about Coulson which . . . I'm not sure if it even works but if you get it too . . . maybe it does :) .

I think it works very well in the movie's context and am glad I wasn't the only one thinking about it :).

Another Top Critic, David Edelstein of NY Magazine, loved The Avengers. A few people here thought that he would hate it, but he said he had a blast watching it. So far The Avengers has a perfect score with the Top Critics, which is wonderful.

Apart from being supersmart, Joss Whedon has the perfect credentials to write and direct a colossal commercial construct like Marvel’s The *Avengers: He plainly loves the opportunity to put these comic-book icons—Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth)—in one room and let them hang out, spar (with words as well as hammers, shields, etc.), and weigh the merits of individualism versus teamwork. Really—debate is as important to him as “Hulk, smash!” The movie would be all over the place if not for Whedon’s centrifugal seriousness. And it would be overbearingly pompous if not for his nifty ability to spoof his subjects without devaluing them. Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other Whedon wonders, The Avengers is both campy and *reverential. Comic-Con nerds will have multiple orgasms. I had a blast.

This film will stay in the high 90's now. There's no question about now.

Sweet! And they haven't yet put up Glieberman's or Travers' reviews.

Now I'm really wondering which direction NY Times will go.

I agree this movie is definitely staying above 90%.

The way it's been dancing between 95%-97%, I'm starting to think it'll rest at 96% after a majority of critics weigh in. That it's still registering 100% with Top Critics right now though is a wonder to behold.

They better go ahead and start editing that critical blurb spot. They already have more than enough material.

Yep.

Edelstein's review is the most positive one I've read from the mainstream press. He totally got what The Avengers is about and he loved it. The fact that all of the top critics who have weighed in thus far have given it positive reviews is very encouraging. Disney's marketing department must be over the moon with the number of great blurbs they have for the critics' opinion ads they will release soon. No need to quote some obscure blog or small-town newspaper when they have TIME, the Rolling Stone and the New York Daily News to cite.

I keep on refreshing the village voice website to see what they say. They were supposed to have a review out this morning.

Interesting what he says about Johannson. Personally, besides the Prestige, I was just waiting for the Johannson role that I would universally love her in. It hadn't happened but I saw something in her with Black Widow in Iron Man 2. She, alone, almost saved that movie for me.

Then, she had We Bought A Zoo this past Winter and I thought she was great, even if the film isn't all that great. It's a nice watch.

It sounds, at least to me, that Johannson's performance as Widow in the Avengers is the one I've been waiting for from her....

I've pretty much been in love with ScarJo since Lost In Translation. Maybe it was her unexpected chemistry with Bill Murray, but she was nearly flawless in it. Maybe that's just me. I've breathlessly recommended LiT to so many people over the years, but it's been hit-or-miss with my friends.

I've seen Lost in Translation. Honestly, I didn't care for anything in it. I didn't think it was horrible or anything but I just didn't have a reaction to it, whatsoever.

Heh, LiT was the first movie since Usual Suspects (my all time favorite, number one desert island movie) that I rewatched immediately after the credits started rolling. It turned me into a sobbing, bawling wreck for a whole week after multiple viewings. Ever since then, though, SJ has been one of my favorite actresses.

Topic? I'm just really glad she's being showcased here in the movie and that Widow appears to be given one hell of a meaty background. :woot:

then I would like to know will quotes from all the great reviews be added to tv spots playing this week

Have you guys found any negative US reviews yet?

Amy Nicholson has one of the two rotten reviews and hers is US review.

Damn, how did she get around the embargo? Overseas audience? I was asking to guage the prospects of the RT score staying high given that a lot of people seem to be uncovering positive US reviews, including a lot of top critics. Looking quite possible at the moment.

Well it's midnight on the west coast and 4/30 in pretty much the entire country. So that means USA embargo is now over and here is my review:

Oh man why'd I read the goddamn comments?

On a more positive note, Scott Weinberg, an excellent genre critic, published his review. It's a rave, it's on RT, and the average rating just got bumped up from an 8.1 to an 8.2. I can't believe the score continues to rise like this.

BIFF! BAM! POW!

Yeah. Same thing with Variety and THR reporters even though the writers are American and they saw it in America. But hey whatever. I'm not going to be a dip and cheat the embargo like they do under their fake guise of "international readers."
