From 69 to 71 ITS NOW 75!!!

Travers from Rolling stone gave a 88 (3.5/4)

Rolling Stone
Peter Travers 88

"The Avengers has it all. And then some. Six superheroes for the price of one ticket... It's also the blockbuster I saw in my head when I imagined a movie that brought together the idols of the Marvel world in one, shiny, stupendously exciting package. It's "Transformers" with a brain, a heart and working sense of humor. Suck on that, Michael Bay."

So basically its what Transformers 3 (portals, alien invasion) should have been.

Nice! It's great to finally read what Travers has to say about this movie.

Nice.

I just realized I shouldn't have gotten in that Bay discussion, because when I think about it, I've only ever watched 4 of his films: Armageddon, Bad Boys, Pearl Harbor, and Transformers. I liked 3 out of the 4, but avoided the other films due to bad word of mouth. So I suppose had I watched more of his worse films, I might dislike Bay a lot more :P.

For me Bay's best to date in my opinion was The Island with Transfomers 1 second. His other films I honesty enjoyed as entertainment.

I think when Bay did Transformers 2 and 3 he felt that he could make anything and people would still come to see it so he did just that.

He tried to send that message to megan fox by replacing her with a model that can't act worth $#*!.

Well, he turned out to be correct in that assumption.

Yeah, I like to think that when Bay finally got tired of Fox, he said something along the lines of "Look, there are lots of other really pretty girls who can't act. Watch." And he proceeded to open up a Vanity Fair magazine and picked a girl at random "She's replacing you. Done."

I'm not a Megan Fox fan nor do I dislike her, but I was never bothered by her in Transformers. I liked the fact that she was a hands-on girl who could get **** done. So the entire "I drive, you shoot." is one of my favorite sequences in the first Transformers. But the new girl.... ugh...

She was better than the plastic blow up doll in 3.

When you go down to those levels it doesn't really matters. Megan Fox is terrible as an actress and so was that other girl.

Agreed on both counts but I was still emotionally connected to Megan Fox's character. All of that got tossed out the window with the replacement. I couldn't enjoy those scenes as much as I should have.

It's like replace cubic zirconia with a glass.

Micheal Bay is such an easy target, of course Joss Whedon's Avengers flick is gonna blow the TF movies out of the water. I would rather a reviewer compared his film to someone like James Cameron's, how does it compare to T2 and Avatar? Surely they are more vinteresting comparisons to make, because they are *good* action packed extravaganzas.

I mean, there was a poster the other day talking to me who once again dragged the weary name of MB into the conversation out of nowhere, for some boring reason, when comparing Wheodn's Serenity, how about comparing it to a James Cameron flick? Because people just like to hate on Micheal Bay. bo-ring.

Well, to fall back on the old cliches, European cinema tends to be thought of as more self-conciously arty, more concerned with visuals and ideas and less concerned with plot and narrative. An easy shorthand for me is that Alien (directed by a Brit, creatures designed by a Swiss guy), is, in a lot of ways, a European film. Impeccably designed, beautifully made, filled with haunting imagery, but with a simple plot, thin characters, minimal dialogue, etc.

Whereas Aliens, though made by a Canadian, is a very American film -- tons of memorable characters and memorable dialogue, but much more fast-paced, action-packed, story driven, and much less about mood, suspense and ideas than its predecessor.

Whedon is a huge fan of Cameron and Aliens, and he fits into that lineage to me, as does his film -- he even said Cameron is who he studied for the action scenes. So my feeling is if European critics are embracing a very "American" film like Avengers, American critics might like it even more. Make sense, or am I reaching?

ETA: Yeah, no way this drops under 90 percent at this point. Just closed Tribeca to more raves from cineastes and film snobs. Paul Haggis called it "surprisingly satisfying." 91 is the lowest it's gonna go, I think. I'm gonna stick my neck out and say it manages to stay at 95-96 though.

Wow, I didn't know that. As someone who loves how Cameron shoots action you just made my day.

Transformers 2 & 3 were terrible. The first one was pretty good though. For some reason, Bay allowed the script for the sequels to be a complete and utter joke. There were scenes in the third movie that made no sense, with some of the most idiotic dialouge.

You mis-spelled dialogue there, haha, I made a short film with my friends, and gave myself a 'dialouge' credit using my camera's inbuilt graphics function, and did not notice the mis-spelling until afterwards, my pals always took the piss out of me for that one, so I always notice when someone else does it. :oldrazz:

So I did! It's probally at the top of the list for words that I spell wrong when typing. Stupid 'o' and 'u' being so close to each other on the keyboard. :woot:

Sounds like replacing diet coke with coke zero. Both are awful and makes you wish you had the real thing.

Well, he turned out to be correct in that assumption.

Look, we all make mistakes. Okay? :oldrazz:

Welcome to the Avengers thread. Settle in and put your feet up. :)

Just be glad were off topic talking about Bay and the Transformers sequels. Imagine if we were talking about Nolan and The Dark Knight.

It's so silly that the two fanbases clash (Marvel/DC, Nolan vs whatever Marvel Studios does) like they do. I flipping adore Whedon AND Nolan and I'm hoping that both of their films are tremendous success stories this summer. Gritty, noirish, so-called realism or fantastical over the top superhero craziness... there's room for both.
