The Dark Knight Rises The Christopher Nolan Thread

Will you be excited about Nolan's Non-Batman films in the future?

  • Yes! He's a great director.

  • No! I like Nolan because of Batman.

  • Ehh, it depends on the movie.

I want to see Nolan do a simple drama. Thats where his Howard Hughes movie comes in

I wouldn't be that excited to commit to a Howard Hughes movie shortly after the Bruce Wayne trilogy though :P unless... of course, it's a different kind of Howard Hughes movie.

I too would like him to move outside his comfort zone and made a period epic. A smaller more local set film would be nice too.

I'd like to see Nolan tackle some sort of horror film. Not some stupid slasher flick but some kind of psychological horror flick.

During the Awards run with Inception, Nolan stated he's "given up" (I'm paraphrasing) on trying to handle different genres, as he's not well suited to that sort of versatility. He's found his niche and he's likely sticking to it for a while.

No, because his next movie will be, most likely, a Howard Hughes biopic.

so you better watch out
you better not cry
better not pout
im telling you why
Christopher Nolan is coming to town
he's making a list
and checking it twice
gonna find out who's naughty or nice
Christopher Nolan is coming to town
he sees you when you're sleeping
he knows when you're awake
he knows if you've been bad or good
so be good for goodness sake

What exactly would be a definitive "Christopher Nolan" genre? Certainly not just a superhero crime-thriller? Or a heist film... or even a period-adaptation? He has his own craft, but I don't see how we can equate it with any single genre?

I would label his entire filmography under the branch of psychological dramas/thrillers. The settings and scale may change, but certainly they are ripe with the pragmatic and meticulous complexities Nolan is famous for.

Don't expect Nolan to work outside the box is all I'm saying. Or rather, what he's saying.

Not so much genre wise but to varying degrees all of his films have assh*** protagonists.

Might want to improve on that conversation etiquette, junior.

Alot if not all of Christopher Nolans films deal with identity. Nolan has said he loves the Noir genre and his films have film noir elements

Hmm... I suppose you could do that. I don't expect Nolan to move away from his own style, but again within the boundary of that style you can encompass any number of genres. I can definitely imagine him doing a political piece like Oliver Stone but where the focus is strictly on the subject's psychological dilemmas. He calls Inception a heist movie for crying out loud!

The Prestige/ The Dark knight
Memento
Batman Begins
Inception
Insomnia

And Hugh Hackman and Aaron Eckhart will be forever underrated in their performances.

I'm going to go ahead and predict that the Hughes movie will be canned for now. Nolan is WB's golden boy so I'm sure he'll be offered every imaginable project once WB knows that he's ready to make another one.

I hope it's canned. Sounds completely uninteresting. I want something in the vein of The Prestige.

I think Nolan calls the shots with WB. He walks into their office and tells them what he is going to make. Not WB calling him up and offering. Hence to why he's the producer of Superman, WB isn't going to touch that movie or doing anything to Snyder's vision while Nolan is around.

Nolan gets a pass from some people for not staying faithful to the source material, because he made a good movie.

The things that he did that wrecked the movies for me, where completely unnecessary as well.

If you are going to butcher the characterizations of both Ras Al Ghul and Henri Ducard, why even include them in the movie? Why not just create a completely new character for that role. Nolan had no problem making up Rachel Dawes. I would have enjoyed the film much more had they not royally jacked up Ras.

I like a lot of what Nolan did with Bruce/Batman, but I guess my complaint with the first 2 films is that if you can't fit characters from the source material into the film, without completely trainwrecking who they are in the source material, then just don't use them.

I don't need or even want the director to just copy things panel for panel, but I don't want him to just disregard the source material either.

What he did with Harvey Dent and Ras Al Ghul's storylines is on the same level as if he would have made Batman's secret identity really Clark Kent, and he was an ex-cop who's wife and kids were shot by the mob. I mean, he's still called Batman, who cares if the rest of the story bears no resemblance to the source material.

If Nolan did that, but still made a decent film, I'm sure a lot of people would still like his take on Batman. No one has made a truly great adaptation of Batman yet. Nolan came close, and could have done it if he would have just made up new characters instead of butchering the ones he used.

i want to see nolan do a horror movie. i think he'll shine.
batman begins, the prestige, tdk have moments of that gave off a horror movie vibe and aesthetic.

and maybe a sci-fi film. with spaceships and stuff.
