I totally agree with all of this. I really do feel JG won't have a lick of trouble bringing us a well made; well liked Superman film. I also feel he's going to surprise a lot of fans and enter ballsy territory (but landing on the emotion). I have my worries and my sense of urgency as a Superman fan is at an all-time high. I will always acknowledge that until I am shown things will work out in the long run.The way to break that cycle is to go away from what you did before. They need to build on a new foundation. You don't stop divisiveness with one big action...American Politics has been showing that the last 4 years ya know. You start small and build. It might not seem to work on the micro level, but it does on the macro level. If you go for the big win you risk the "oh look another big reveal that goes nowhere" reaction overshadowing everything. The end of the DCEU was like that. They need to slowly get the audience there.
And first impressions don't matter if what comes next works. The first impressions of plenty of characters have been fumbled and the movies were still very successful and vice versa. First impressions are just boilerplate water cooler style talk. If the film works then the trailers and the next reveals will make this obsolete. (or put it in better context which will be my guess)
We need to get past the PTSD of the DCEU. I am not big James Gunn super fan (no pun intended) but he is better at this than anyone else WB put in charge previously. That doesnt mean it will work, but the previous regimes would have gone into "spin" mode already over this and he isn't. That tells me there is something behind this worth waiting for. The general audience will come along for the ride if Gunn gives them a reason to.
Realistically, and first and foremost, I just want a great Superman film and to hell with everything else. On the flipside, I also crave healthy perspectives on its success. It's not that this first reveal is DOA. That's silly to suggest. It's just a bummer to see it being torn to shreds everywhere you look. Instead of a fresh start, the reaction just seems like it's one big continuation of discourse. That's been exhausting to me. JG and the marketing will rebound though. There's a lot of eyes on this thing and as you said, people care about Superman. It just goes to show how tough of an icon he is to master with every microcosm of a move. Gunn is somewhat of a top tier character guy that has seen major successes, but this type of backlash proves he'll be in a fight with a beloved IP that had its share of shortcomings. I feel that's a great thing for all parties involved, but scary nonetheless. I'm mainly just glad they're swinging with Superman again. That can't go unstated. I'm grateful he will have another cinematic chance this soon.
