The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I'm fairly excited for Fantastic Four. Period piece, and a little more true to the comics. Liking the cast. I was slightly put off by the female Silver Surfer, and it's not because I'm not open to it. I just prefer the classic Silver Surfer, and would have liked to have seen him first. I haven't been so keen on all Marvel projects since Endgame. I had kept watching the films that were released after Endgame and some of the series but I started to pull away from some films or series. I skipped The Marvels, Secret Invasion, Ms. Marvel, Agatha All Along, Wakanda Forever and Loki season 2 (I might watch that though) but I've watched some of the other stuff in between, some of which I thought were modest, others I thought were terrible.

I was massively excited for Deadpool and Wolverine though which I loved. I skipped Brave New World, and I can't say I'm excited about Thunderbolts* either. Another rogue superhero team of misfits, with some superficial jokes. Well, it's just my impression. Maybe it will be good. At this point though, I feel like Marvel has over-delivered. Putting a bunch of misfits together and more cameo porn. It's becoming too predictable. Just my opinion.

But for me, of course it's more about Superman. I want Superman to succeed which is why I worry about Fantastic Four releasing two weeks after Superman. I have no idea how Superman will do. Fantastic Four looks hard to tell. I'm no futurist, but I remember feeling pretty confident that Aquaman (2018) was going to make $1 billion dollars. It was a good win for DC. After Wonder Woman released, it looked certain that the box office would go up pretty high. I think most of us knew Joker would break box office records being part of an already popular franchise. I guess Gunn's Superman needs a final trailer, then we'll see. Gunn has had a pretty good rep with the Guardians trilogy, Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad so then...I feel like Krypto is a good enough reason for non-Superman fans to go see it. The only thing I feel that may draw people back is if the film has too many silly James Gunn jokes.

There was a point when I thought Man of Steel could have made a billion if it wasn't for the mixed reception the film had, as it was a controversial take on Superman, and for a majority, it was just an absolute disaster porn. Understandably, it didn't make a billion. But before releasing, all those harsh critics of Superman were interested, and I never saw so much buzz for Superman in such a long time. With names like Zack Snyder attached to it and producer Christopher Nolan, that helped it too, and because it was going to a be a realistic approach to Superman, but it's a shame it didn't pan out that way. I was positive too that Batman v Superman would make over a billion, but after seeing the film...no way.

I highly doubt very few ( if any ) thought BvS couldn't make AT LEAST a billion.
Batman, Superman, and WW together for the first time on the big screen?
C'mon, Only a idiot could screw that up.
So A billion is lock I thought.
In fact, I thought a billion would be on the low side.

So, now I'm very hesitant on predicting a billion for Superman.
I see it like this. I think 800/850 MILL is on the high side
( if it's like really great )

And 580/620 mill on the low side
( if it's just so so.) That would be a pretty bad outcome.

That said, I think it will hit somewhere in the middle @ 700/750 mill.
I think/hope it will be really good, and the hunger for more will be there.

The sequel will be your billion dollar film if this one hits all the right marks.

( If it's even worthy to hit a billion I still don't think it will. The reason why is because several won't give it a chance at the cinema because of the former DCEU, and will therefore skip it.
It won't be until later when they watch it on streaming that they'll come around. )

Even as someone who thinks this movie looks basically awful the criticism of the other heroes presence feels silly to me. It’s a superhero story, superhero stories take place in worlds filled with superheroes unless they’re installments in a few very specific movie franchises. Sure, if they’re all just spinoff bait that sucks but they are probably just Characters In The Movie.
Out of curiosity - what's putting you off so far?

I'm trying to temper my excitement so I don't crash and burn with high expectations again. Give me some grounding 😅

I have resisted buying action figures of Superman for my entire adult life. I fear my resistance may finally be exhausted. :weeping:

Sword seems to not like movies that are kind of cliche...they want exciting ideas and out of the box thinking.

(just from what I have gleaned over the years)

I have 5 Batman Hot Toys. I love having them around. I'm sure they'll do justice for Superman.

I have purchased a few Superman figures. Mafex HUSH Superman, Fleischer Superman by McFarlane, and as of yesterday - the 'Silver Age' McFarlane Superman. The latter is my absolute favourite. Can't recommend that figure enough!

I won't lie the Fleischer one looks sick!

Haha, well, I'm trying to be less of a public negative Nancy about it. The last thing CBM fandom means is more negativity but 'cause you asked:

I just don't really like the cast outside of Hoult - it all feels fan casting, just taking the safest and least creative route. I don't see a specific vision at play. I just see trying to cast inoffensive affordable actors who fit the established mould exactly.

The marketing also gives me bad vibes. The intense focus on Gunn himself at all times. The only thing they're pitching feels like cloying, astroturfed, empty platitudes about Superman being a Really Nice Guy and a Symbol of Hope, and how David Corenswet is Literally Personally Superman. I don't get any sense of a real vision or story, or using Superman to mean anything other than a Really Nice Guy - which is hugely important! But thus far (and the movie could surprise me) that feels like all the movie has to offer: Superman finally smiles and has a cute dog.

It also looks just terrible visually, like the design aesthetic but the way its shot just looks like The Flash with finished CG to me.

Most importantly though: unless the leaked plot wildly misinterpreted some things (which is totally possible, even probable) I just think there's no version of that story I don't greatly dislike. Some stuff in there breaks the aspect of the Superman story that feels the most vibrant and important in the current climate along with a bunch of other stuff that just sounds deeply lame.

Genuinely think it's great so many other Superman fans are having such a great time with this though. It has not been a good time for us for a very, very long time and I'm happy this is clicking so well so far for so many of you. I shall leave y'all to your Hype.

I made that mistake when SR came out. I was in college at the time so collecting was definitely no where on my mind.

20 years later I've now spent a fortune with those eBay prices collecting old SR figures and memorabilia.

I figured I better get it now while it's available at a reasonable price.

Thanks for sharing! These are all very valid points that I absolutely do need to hold in mind going in as well. Just because I feel pretty safe there won't be a neck snap, doesn't mean I won't feel disappointed in other ways - but I do have the advantage of having loved GOTG so I feel like there will at least be something enjoyable there for me, even if it's a bit clichéd (I kinda love tropes so not an issue for me) and there's some lame aspects that annoy me.

But yeah, I hope it ends up being better than that and something enjoyable for you too!

Sword just buy it. I'm sure it's affordable...

It's vintage and not available anymore. 😭
Amazon has some awesome knockoffs though. I'm particularly feeling the power suit.
