Ah, but THR was not 'theorising'. When THR says that 'sources' have told them that Talia in the film, it more or less means that Talia is in the film. They do not report flimsy rumours - they're a trade publication, not a movie website.
This was part of the THR report. After their report of Eva Green and Naomi Watts, Collider updated with the following.
Now, despite the recent press release debacle, Collider does not post BS and I think they way they handled that bungle proves their credibility. I would rate them as a site on the same level as Moviehole - if they report it, it's some they've been told by genuine sources and something that they believe will be happening. That means that two very reliable sources have said that Talia is in the film.
I asked for clarification on this issue from someone (who has contacts with the site) who told me that they believed what Collider had reported was what was going to happen and what THR had reported was what was happening. In the surrounding circumstances, I interpreteted that as saying "Eva can't play Catwoman, we'll go to backups" - but the timing for everything was off. For a start, the THR report stated that the girls were in 'final testing' for the role (which they believed was Talia) - but a member on the BOF forum had told us that Anne had been to the studio for days at a time (and this was around two days after the THR report) and was obviously not auditioning, but in final negotiations and the announcement came a few days after that. Now, the reason why Eva could not join the cast was due to 'scheduling conflicts' while THR gave the reason why Naomi could not join the cast (but confirmed Nolan's interest in her) was her inability to schedule meetings given her current shooting schedule.
So, my theory is that all the female casting reports came out at the same time and the reason for the conflicting information is because Nolan had more or less chosen who he wanted for the roles, but two of them fell through at the last minute. I think we were slated for Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Eva Green as Talia and Naomi Watts in a third role. Eva obviously pulled out and Nolan looked elsewhere, obviously to Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz. Why? Because this new casting list from THR has the same split that the Deadline casting list had - not older/younger, but dark/fair. I think he waited for Naomi for the other role but got an expression of interest from Winslet, who he had wanted to work with on Inception but who declined to join the project after deciding she was not suited for the character.
All of this is conjecture, but why did THR say Nolan was meeting with other actresses when Marion's own 'people' confirmed that she's 'in discussions' for the role. Surely the fact that Nolan's meeting with other actresses would undermine the negotiations?
