Bane was utilized for the sole purpose of using Hardy in the movie, instead of better, and more established characters like Riddler or Penguin. In fact, I would prefer if Nolan flat out said "it's a fictionalized Tom Hardy vs. Batman, yo."

Yes, and I suppose the fact that Knightfall is a widely regarded crucial storyline in the mythos and Bane's impact on the comics at the time has nothing to do with the fact...

Seriously, pay closer attention to the footage. There's much more about Bane's inclusion than simply giving Hardy a role to fill, the story beats of Knightfall has fairly obvious ties to Bruce Wayne's story arc in the movie based on considerable evidence.

Also, Bane's been established perfectly fine. On the level of Riddler or Penguin? Certainly not, but he's been widely regarded as a primary member of Batman's rogues gallery for nearly twenty years. Just because you don't happen to like the character doesn't make him any less of a viable choice for the movie's villain.
