Not only less than Antman but less than Shazam! as well, by a big margin of around $80-100M less if DP finishes at $260-280M.

Some good news. I'm sure this will be a relief to this movie's fans (all 4 of them), plus Kinberg.

Before Sunday, it was said Dark Phoenix would have a 77% drop for its second weekend. It only dropped 71.5%.

Yay.

Another good news!

It will outgross Blade: Trinity in Monday or Tuesday, and will outgross Fant4stic this week!

From one of the tweet comments:

"Professor X has better legs than Dark Phoenix."

Ouch.

Damn. That’s cold.

I’m no fan of Dark Phoenix but I’m glad it’s getting more than Fan4stic. Fan4stic deserves its crown for all time.

I still can't believe we have a X-Men movie that is gonna gross less than Daredevil, Ghost Rider and Blade II. If you have said that to me last month, I would have thought of a X-Men solo, not a freaking X-Men team film. Less than $100 million domestically never looked good in the last decade and its much worse these days especially other Marvel movies can easily gross $100 million in 3 to 5 days.

With Kinberg taking over the director chair for a Dark Phoenix redo, and bringing back his chums McAvoy, Fassie and JLaw, I had very little confidence in this film. But even so, I figured that the BO base would be AT LEAST $100m DOM AND $400M WW due to star power and the established franchise fanbase. For me, this absolute cratering was unexpected.

Please. When Iron Man elicited nothing but raised, clueless eyebrows, when the Avengers was considered a cheap knockoff of Justice League, the X-men was in every toy shelves, in the living room of every kid enjoying his saturday off, and in ample video games from SNES to PS2.

Blame Fox for failing to maximise the brands potential, and squandering the rest of what little appeal they mustered as Marvel made celebrities of C rated heroes.

90s kid? All that is true. But its been almost more than 20-30 years since the X-Men was that prominent. You have people graduating High School or College who never had that connection or interaction with the X-Men like those before.

Fox is at fault, but so is Marvel Entertainment who ignored the brand because they didn't own the movie rights. There is enough blame to go around.

And for some reason, it seems like 90s nostalgia hasn't really taken off so there isn't much to take advantage of there either. For whatever reason, people seem to look back more fondly on the 80s than the 90s. So we see things like Transformers and TMNT (at least the first film) making a lot of money while stuff like Power Rangers and Pokemon disappoint. Disney Renaissance remakes being a notable exception to this. I'm not sure why this is, but there definitely seems to be a pattern of 80s remakes generating more interest than 90s remakes.

I agree with everything you said except that Last Stand didn't really focus on Jean -- there was more focus on 'The Cure' plot-line. The Jean/Phoenix plotline really is more of the secondary plotline in that movie

Yeah I would prefer if the MCU ditch Jean for awhile.
Just leave her out the first movie.

‘Toy Story 4’ To Cure Summer Sequelitis & Set Global Opening Record For Animated Film With $260M – Deadline
When it comes to the recent avalanche of lackluster summer sequels, i.e. Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Dark Phoenix and Men in Black: International, one film finance source snarked to us recently, “I don’t think this current trend at the box office is ‘sequelitis.’ Perhaps with this latest string of misfires at the box office they’re just simply bad pictures. Make bad product and no one buys, make good product and they buy.”
Shots fired!

*Off-topic but Deadline online needs an editor to spell check their articles...Jesus.

Not quite OT: The ad at the top of this page is for Dark Phoenix ticket at Cinemark. :pal:

I just realized MIB Opening Weekend went up from the forecast (from even as late as Sunday). On Sunday they said MIB had a $28.5Mil OW.

Actuals went up over $30Mil. Dark Phoenix just can't catch a break...

Legendary X-Men Writer Chris Claremont discusses his thoughts on Dark Phoenix's dismal box office earnings.

No disrespect to Mr. Claremont but I'm kind of like ''whaaa?'' when he stated Dark Phoenix did "extremely well overseas" at the 21:43 mark. That’s just patently false. Dark Phoenix didn't do very well overseas at all.... I mean the film just suffered a 90% drop in the Middle Kingdom alone and opened pretty poorly everywhere else. It beat Pets for the #1 spot but frankly its very likely the movie isn't going to match the overall worldwide tally of the first X-Men film without adjusting for inflation.

Claremont may be be an X-pert on all things Mutant-related but a Box Office analyst he is not. lol.

He was very tactful and didn't want to trample on people he knows personally. Classy and smart.

He isn't an expert on box office and seems a little out of touch on other points of his film 'analysis'.

I'm fairly certain he also praised X3 at the time. He's cameoed in that movie and IIRC also wrote that film's novelization (he wrote X2's at least). He's lambasted that movie since, so I think it'll only be a matter of time before he says what he really thinks about this one.

If there was Mr. X-men, Claremont would be it. He wins if the X-men win, so I don't fault him for saying good things about this one, right now.

That said, I haven't seen the video yet but I agree with the sentiment here, why is he commenting about this movie's Box Office? lol

I recommend you check it out. One thing that was striking to me when he said that the creative choice to make Mystique into more of a anti-hero-to-hero character that leads the X-Men was something that was consistent with his vision of the character. I don’t know to how to feel about that, but I’m not going to pretend that I’m a big Mystique fan, and I’m sure as heck ain’t going to pretend I know more about Mystique than the one who created her, lol.

I watched it shortly after I posted my reply. I like Claremont and I even enjoyed his X-treme X-men run (even when most fanboys had already turned against Chris), but it was kind of an awkward interview. Chris' go-to answer when asked what he meant by his review of Dark Phoenix ("Pro: It started; Con: It ended") is: " Dark Phoenix has one character and Endgame has 26."

That doesn't really answer the question why he likes the movie. It just sounds like an excuse. And Endgame didn't make $2Bil at the box office because it had 26 characters. That's non sense.

I've only seen 10mins of the video, so I'll probably watch more of it later.

Here's a preview to what Disney will do to Dark Phoenix's theatrical run next week.

Putting down a dying dog is not a senseless act, but a mercy killing of the noblest of intentions. The Mouse must put Kinberg's abomination out of its misery!

This is what they need to do to the bird:

Why does most of the users in this sub forum have to be so demeaning to the movie, the people involved in it, and the people who enjoyed it? Cant you say the exact same thing in a polite way? That attitude towards the movie since it before it started shooting to now has been everywhere, it has turned boring.
Oh man... you think that's bad...
