DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

I loved MoS and will defend it to hell and back, but at this point in time my interest in the current DCEU is zilch. It's dead and buried, and I want them to scrap everything and start over. No MoS2 is going to pull me back in. Alas this tainted universe shall continue on. Blah.

I see no reason to throw out the element that has largely always worked - the cast. What happens when you reboot and it doesn’t work. Reboot again? Eventually WB has to stick with something, why not these people audiences are already attached to? Just put them in good movies.

The problem is calling it MOS2 but doing a movie that is outside of the cast, so different.
Im not convinced that its final name will be MOS2 but if so, it would be dumb imo unless they get back snyder etc.

And i dont want Snyder back.
Call it if you must "The Man of Steel" but calling it literally Man of Steel 2 would suck.

You got a good cast...well a good Superman with Cavill, its fine to use him...just do what James Wan did with Aquaman in terms of the world.

i'm sure they won't call it Man of Steel 2. the days of numbered sequels are pretty much over these days.

Well, to be fair, there's just as much a risk a sequel won't work, as there is a reboot won't work.
A good sequel film isn't guaranteed.

What happens if a sequel doesn't work? Do you just try again because the cast is already in place?

In this case, we don't have an Avengers or The Batman , style critical and BO success of films to point to.
We have MOS, BvS, and JL all of which were received polarizing to negative responses and reactions.

Yeah, we can obviously point to the creative teams, WB leadership etc, but that doesn't erase the fact those films were poorly received from critics, polarized from fans, and met with apathy to negativity from the GA.

At the same time ,the GA at least , hasn't been attached to this version of Superman and it's cast.

I mean, there may be alot of people in fandom attached to the cast , but it's yet to be seen that there's an attachment to the cast from the GA , which , at the end of the day, is gonna make or break a MOS 2.

That doesn't mean you can't put this cast in a better film of course, but there's no guarantee MOS 2 will be a better film or will generate interest with GA , which so far, hasn't been that attached to Cavill's Superman.

So, there are several reasons why a studio might want to reboot .

But at the end of the day, WBD has made their decision , and all we can hope is that the script is indeed better and that the cast has a good story to work with.

Good point. I thought it was just getting more common but it’s pretty much everything at this point.

I thank Dwayne Johnson because without him, the DCEU would be dead forever. He more or less brought it back not only with Black Adam but also all his moves behind the scenes.

Superman v. Black Adam: Rise of Justice

The neXt movie after that is: The Justice League

Robert Meyer Burnett says Henry Cavill’s refusal to cameo at the end of Shazam enraged former WB chairman Tobey Emmerich to the point that he had Cavill banned from ever appearing as Superman again in retaliation. That’s the main reason why Superman projects have stalled in recent years.

Emmerich’s firing earlier this year is what paved the way for Cavill’s return.

Complete clowns. WB execs constantly putting their personal feelings before sensible business.

When you have a mega star like The Rock it makes all the difference when getting the DCEU back off up under the ground

Not sure if this was posted already but the Zatanna movie is apparently cancelled.

DC Movies: James Gunn Pitches in Secret, Dwayne Johnson Eyes Superman – The Hollywood Reporter
They should just restart.

I feel like WBD are still trying to hold on to DCEU because there is money to be made with Aquaman 2 and 3, Wonder Woman 3 and the Flash trilogy. But Blue Beetle, Shazam 2....these superheroes aren't really crossing over with anyone so the public appeal is limited compare to MCU films. Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn solo and Birds of Prey are much done at this point, unless they are used in a crossover event film. Black Adam doesn't strike me a boXoffice winner. Shazam 2, I wouldn't be surprised if it fails to perform similarly or better compare to Shazam 1. There's just no hype for that film.

I can see Man of Steel 2 and Justice League 2 reinvigorate DCEU with the right team. But they probably better off to start with a clean slate with that right team, and who knows launching solo movies for lesser known DC characters like Zatanna, would stand a better chance at the boX office unlike with DCEU.

I definitely agree

I haven't seen BA yet but given the RT % for Black Adam and they're all saying the same thing (lack of story, the story can't breathe, etc.), it seems in hindsight it was best The Wonder Twins (same writer) got cancelled so quickly...

There's a part of me that's super excited for more Cavill, but IMO, shallow CGI fights with Black Adam doesn't exactly sound like the way to reinvigorate interest in Superman. Even a Chris McQuarrie-directed MOS2 sounds kinda dull to me. While there may be a lot of initial excitement with his return, I feel that upon execution, audiences will once again come away indifferent to Supes overall, because really, with this continuity, this take, so much the appeal of the Superman story can't exist anymore (the Clark/Lois secret identity rom-com stuff, a dorky Clark, a Lex who people other than me actually like, etc). Snyder discarded all that for the sake of his vision and his story, the first contact story, the world's opinion of Superman story, etc, which is valid, but that's told now, so...

IMO, the same way we needed a refresh of Supes back in 2013 for the world to see how Supes could be taken 'seriously', I think Supes needs another refresh, to show how Supes is not dull, but rather fun, romantic, funny, heart-warming, zany, etc. A new take with a fresh cast, from a really exciting director, like the Daniels (Everything Everywhere All at Once), who can utilize all the appeal of the Superman story.

As for the rest, as usual, WB just need to hire good directors and get some quality control up top when it comes to the writers' room and producers. The creative team on Black Adam never should have been hired, and someone screwed up by allowing the Rock to throw his weight around as a producer. I swear, it feels like he wrote some lines in the script.

Well, I'm already seeing the excuses and accusations that " The Critics have an Agenda", desperate ,talking points floating around online .

That's usually not the best of signs.

I'm skipping it myself but, I guess we'll see how it makes out.

Well the B+ CinemaScore can't be blamed on the critics' "agenda." That's a really s***ty audience score for a blockbuster designed to be a crowdpleaser and ONLY a crowdpleaser. MoS got an A- and dropped like a lead balloon in week 2. This will not have good WOM.

Yep. In no way is Black Adam meant to be divisive. It's meant to be a very basic crowd pleaser, just like all of Rock's flicks. All of the Rock's solo flicks with a B+ were his flops.
