DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Gunn also wrote and directed the best Shakespeare adaptation that has been made so far with Tromeo and Juliet…and he did it on a $300k budget 25 years ago.

What has he gotten exactly? We've seen him with Suicide Squad/Peacemaker where everyone was comedy. Also the guy who wanted to kill Amanda Waller i believe

So you're not a fan of Gunn's movies? That's too bad.

I really really like The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker was also pretty great, imo. Better than every other DC movie released in the past 10 years, with the exception of The Batman. He knows how to write likable characters. When it comes to DC that's a massive godsend imo.

Seems like a great guy for the job. The Suicide Squad was better than any of the GotG movies and the best thing the DCEU has come up with. Now he’s definitely done with Marvel.

I did NOT see Gunn and Safran co-running the DC films sector of WBD on my bingo card. Gunn's street credit with the GOTG films (and TSS to a lesser degree) gives me the impression that he can get riskier DC properties greenlit with DeLuca and Abdy backing him. And Safran gives them backing with several hit franchises on his belt like Shazam and Aquaman.

We're definitely NOT getting Snyder back. Thank God.

I dont love him or hate him but he certainly hasnt done anything that has blown me away.

TSS just turned every character into a comedy and certainly didnt show if he understands these characters outsidde of slapstick comedy.

Did they approach those that have done more than anyone for DC franchise and shown to understand them in/out? Greg Weisman (I know he wouldnt do it anyway), Bruce Timm, etc..?

Also, Gunn won't be writing and directing every DCEU movie from now on. He'll probably be more than happy to leave the bigger characters for other filmmakers while he keeps making shows/movies about the weirder and more obscure characters.

But wouldn't he be in charge of the direction for each property? That's what concerns me the most.

The guy has a weird fetish for poor humor. I really don't see this development as being beneficial for the DCEU.

In terms of James Gunn's tone, I'm not that worried. He literally wrote the Dawn of the Dead remake and produced Brightburn. Neither of which feel like James Gunn movies. And frankly, I'd much rather have a director with a clear vision as the Feige figure of the DCEU than some random studio exec.

This is most likely the case but I don't see how you can draw that conclusion from Gunn being put in charge. Gunn, being a director himself, will probably give chances to filmmakers who aren't surefire bets. DC Studios might now actually, for the first time, be director-friendly.

I love the choices for the new DC regime! Gunn's a sweaty! DC has been winning the past week for me.

Dont think that Zaslav will give him that much freedom to bring back the guy who tarnished Batman and Superman and produced any huge hits.

I'm kinda neutral about this tbh. I wasn't blown away by any of his DC/Marvel stuff. Especially Marvel, because GoTG2, is everything i hate about the MCU concentrated into one film lol. love him OUTSIDE those spaces tho.

Welp, never thought we would agree on anything.

I am fine with Gunn being a producer on DC films. He's a major comic book fan and respects the art form and respects creatives and he's willing to take risks and work with obscure properties. He turned the Guardians of the Galaxy into a major IP.

Zack Snyder isn't coming back to WB unless he has creative control over the films he does. He has a cozy Netflix deal that allows him to do just that.

And his WB movies were EXPENSIVE. Zaslav is likely looking to tighten the belt for future CBMs that get the green light that aren't sequels.

I don't see WBD spending more than $200M on any big movies. Unless they manage to get Christopher Nolan back.

I don’t know if he’s the best fit for an organisational role, but all that you said above is true. :up:

If they dont put the effort Weisman and team have to come up with a bible...just quit while your ahead.

This is great news.

These should be Gunn's first moves for 2024 -

(1) Greenlight a Superman/Henry Cavill movie;
(2) Greenlight (or fix) Wonder Woman 3;
(3) Direct a Suicide Squad vs Black Adam movie;
(4) Static Shock movie.

1 - he's getting his own film. He wasnt coming back just to co-headline a movie again.
2. WW3 is already greenlit and what will he do with it? make it funnier?
3. Why the hell would we have SS vs. Black Adam? It already made zero sense to have them up against whatshername in the first one. They are step down from the JSA not being able to beat him.
4. yes.

4. yes.

1. No film has been greenlit, it has no director or writer nor does it have a star - Henry signed on for two cameos and we've seen one of them.
2. No it hasn't. Patty Jenkins has delivered a script. It hasn't been approved.
3. Fair.

1. He said he is BACK as Superman. He isnt doing 2 cameos and calling it a day. He is back as Superman, we're getting more Superman. And he will be getting a film.

2. WW3 was greenlit forever ago. Thats why she's worked on the script. It is getting made.

The only reason Zack Snyder even has a career is because of James Gunn.

That's not how Hollywood works. Cavill is back as Superman for two films because that's all his contract says. He's filmed them. That means he has as many Superman appearances he's contracted for as he did after JL - exactly zero. If they want him, they need to sign him again. I think they will, but at the moment he is not signed for a Superman film. That is confirmed by every single trade.

So there is no script, no director, no star, no date, no announcement. That means that currently there is no movie.

Also just because a script is written doesn't mean a project has the greenlight. Superman: Flyby, Green Arrow: SuperMax, Ava Duvernay's New Gods, David Goyer's Flash, Gavin O'Connor's Suicide Squad, David Ayer's Gotham City Sirens, Emerald Fennell's Zatanna, Chris McKay's Nightwing and countless other DC films are testament to that.

A movie has not got the greenlight until the people with the power to greenlight it have read the script and given it a budget. On Jenkins' own words, that hasn't happened yet. It's been ANNOUNCED - but so was Cyborg's solo film.
