What was so bad about the first WW & Aquaman?

I'm seeing stuff now where fans are laying the collapse of the DCEU squarely on Johnson, blaming his 'aggressive self-publicising' and spoiler-reveal of Cavill's cameo as major factors in the disappointing returns for Black Adam - and therefore the Gunn/Safran purge.

The main factor is that Black Adam is not an interesting enough character to be the lead of his own movie franchise, no matter who is playing him. Rock's ego got the best of him in the sense that he thought he could propel Black Adam to A-list status just by playing him, and that is not how that works.

Gunn did say something to the effect of ''we'll be getting rid of what didn't work and keeping what did''. No doubt he'll be in the board room advocating for:

- Margot Robbie
- Viola Davis
- John Cena
- Whatever his wife wants to do

All of which will make it seem like he is serving himself and not the characters. Safran is a producer on Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle (the only one Gunn has actively promoted so far) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. They are safe... The Flash they'll twist and manipulate to serve their vision, ending in a quasi reboot. They''ll protect what interests them and throw away what doesn't.

Working with Henry down the road sounded like PR fluff to take the sting out of the announcement. Cavill statement seemed to paint the picture much more clearly for me. Gunn wanted Superman and he wanted to do it his way, no baggage attached.

I definitely felt that. Maybe he panicked a little when the returns that started to come in weren't what he'd expected.

It was a long time coming.
Fans try to digest this all, throw their ideas and assumptions etc into this, natural process when something this Big happens.

I assume they had gunn and Safran for a while in their Mind and a reboot or connected plan.
Black Adams failing was just the final nail in the coffin After they threw a lot of Chips into the hat and got burned.

If Gunn throws out everything but keeps his own stuff, many which have his family and friends power, whew boy, talk about nepotism . And I’m not saying Gunn’s stuff is bad or anything, I’m just saying it’s not really right to do such a pick and choose mentality. Reboot or don’t

Yeah if you really want to do a complete reboot of DC, then Peacemaker has to go... I love that show and don't want to see it end, but keeping that makes him look like a hypocrite.

Also does Margot Robbie's Harley really work? I don't think the numbers back it up. I would like to see a performance closer to the recent cartoon's version anyway.

As I've said elsewhere, I'm more than happy to see a new take on Harley.

Yeah agreed. I know there are some hardcore fans of the Robbie version who love her, but I feel like it's almost a caricature of Harley. At least we'll get to see Lady Gaga's take.

Setting up the new DCU setting up the Gunnverse this is how I would set it up:

Phase 1

The Man of Steel (1st film in the new DCU) (mid credits scene but no post credits scene; builds up to a shared universe but builds up to The Caped Crusader)

Wonder Woman (2nd film in the new DCU) (mid credits scene again but no post credits scene; build up to Justice League or tease it but it won't come until much later)

Man of Tomorrow (3rd film in the new DCU) (mid credits scene again; builds up to The Batman)

The Batman (4th film in the new DCU) (mid credits and post credits scene further builds up Justice League)

Justice League (5th film in the new DCU) (introduces Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter)

Phase 2

Man of Steel 3 (6th film in the new DCU)

Wonder Woman 2 (7th film in the new DCU)

The Batman 2 (8th film in the new DCU)

Suicide Squad (9th film in the new DCU)

Justice League 2 (10th film in the DCU)

Blue Beetle (11th film in the DCU)

Batman vs Superman (12th film in the DCU; this would basically be your Civil War type event which would have Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Shazam would be introduced as well as other heroes)

Phase 3

Dr Fate (13th film in the DCU)

Suicide Squad 2 (14th film in the DCU)

Shazam (15th film in the DCU)

Wonder Woman 3 (16th film in the DCU)

Aquaman (17th film in the DCU)

So on and so forth

I wish they would just focus on Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern for the next 5 to 6 years. No joke. No need for a huge movie slate or anything, just make these four characters coexist within a loosely shared continuity. Make some kick-ass movies. Less is more imo.

Reintroduce Batman to the DCU once Reeves is done with his stuff (probably around 2028).

I mean Gunn has already announced it will be a connected universe across streaming, animation, video games and film. I think we’re getting a lot more heroes than those.

The video games part seems so strange to me.
I don't get how that would work. It would be downright unreasonable and unrealistic to assume that GAs watching the next big screen DC film will have all already played a previous game - or watched a previous animated movie - in order for the film to make sense. I just don't see how that expanded stuff could really contain more than nods and maybe a few Easter Eggs. Certainly nothing essential plot-wise.

I'd imagine that just means they're planning to do video game spinoffs of their movies/shows. Not that you'd actually have to play the video games to follow the story.

If I had to guess, the games will be to just add on to the characters journeys. A Superman game where he fights....Toyman. Not necessarily IMPORTANT but adds to the characters history. Like Young Justice.

Yeah, it's just wishful thinking on my part. That's my dream scenario, but there's a big chance they'll be doing the opposite (I mean, they're talking about Lobo, Mr Terrific, etc, so).

EDIT:

I mean...

Apparently, some of the main characters in the DCU will be older than Clark. Interesting.
